Chapter 57: We're dead.
Amara's POV
Things have been very boring and slow since we moved, and it's very possible that I feel like that because I'm now alone and no longer with Lila, but that was how I felt.
Lila and Michaela had asked me the reason why I was up here, being the only other office on this floor besides Lucas', and I explained to them what he had told me, and left the last part a secret which I told Lila later.
I couldn't tell Michaela about all the things that had been happening between Lucas and I, and if I told her about how he promised to not distract me, she would have started asking how that came about, and I really wasn't ready to answer that.
Lucas had been keeping his promise though. I'd only ever seen him passing by when he was going out or coming in. He had never stopped to say hi, or even enter my office for anything, and even if that was what I'd asked for, a silly little part of me wanted him to step in and say hi at least, or just disobey what I'd asked him to do.
I was just so fucking stupid most times and I knew that for sure.
I heaved a sigh and went back to my work when my door squeaked open.
I looked up and — speaking of the devil — Lucas was standing in the doorway.
I wanted to start talking about how he had promised not to be a source of distraction, but he didn't even give me the opportunity as he spoke.
“Be at the meeting room at break time. I have something important to…..talk to everyone about.”
Before I could answer, he stepped outside and closed the door, heading straight back to his office, not even turning back around to take one last look at me.
“O – okay?” I muttered to myself as I went back to work.
Was something up with him or was he just fulfilling my wishes?
I kept working diligently, and finally it was break hour, also known as my new favorite time of the day, because that's the only time I get to hang out with Lila and Micky while at work, and Michaela lived quite far from Lila and I, so we couldn't really hang out with her outside work.
“Hey girl.” I said as I bumped into Lila who looked like she was already on her way to the meeting room.
“Hiiiii.” She squealed as she hugged me.
She hadn't seen me today, seeing as I came pretty late and didn't have time to say hi to her before going up to my office. She couldn't come see me either because that floor was restricted by some really huge security guards that Lucas had placed at every entry point to make sure no one came up there without his invitation.
It was pretty frustrating to me that I couldn't have my friends up there, but it is what it is, and I stopped complaining because I realized that I worked a lot faster without the distraction or lots of thinking, so maybe Lucas knew what he was doing.
“How are you doing?” She asked. “Damn girl, you're looking mighty fine today.” She said again before I could even answer her question.
At this point, I gave up answering and just burst into laughter. “You look mighty fine as well, Lila.”
“Yeah, yeah. You're saying that to try to make me feel good aren't you? I know I'm cute like I usually am, but I also know that I'm not mighty fine today. I'll be mighty fine one day though, and that day…” she started squealing as she hopped from one foot to the other.
“What is making you so excited?” I asked with my brows raised, slightly confused and mostly excited.
“I heard that there was going to be a party and that some of us are going to be invited to represent Blackwell Innovations. And it's just not any type of party, it's the parties with the tuxedoes and evening gowns and expensive champagnes and rich people. Like lots and lots of rich people. I'm so excited to go for it. Maybe I'll even find a rich, hot man there to date.”
“And how do you know that you're going to be picked for the party?” I asked with a slight chuckle.
She paused and turned to me with the most horrified look in her eyes. “You're right. How do I know that? What if they don't pick me, Amara. What do I do then?”
“Okay, first of all, calm down Lila. I didn't even know about this party in the first place which is pretty funny to me, but if they are to pick people to represent, I'm sure you'll be picked, and if Lucas is going to be there, then Michaela will be picked too, so don't worry.”
“Yeah, Lucas will be there. He has to be, unless there's an emergency, which I doubt there will be.”
“Okay, so you and Michaela will be going to the party then.”
“What about you?” She asked as we kept walking. “Don't you think they'll pick you too?”
“I don't know. Like I said, I didn't even know about this event until now, and I don't even know what it entails or when it's going to be held, so I highly doubt that I'd be invited. I genuinely wish that I'm not going to be invited if I'm being honest.”
“Why would you say that?” Lila said as we walked past the boardroom, leaving me a bit confused. “If Michaela and I get invited, wouldn't you like to hang out with us?”
“We just passed the meeting room, Lila.” I said, more worried that she was too lost to know where we were going.
“Oh, no we're not doing it in the main boardroom.” She said before leaning in to whisper. “They say there's a secret meeting room that Lucas had made, because he doesn't want the board of directors to know what he's doing. And we're part of the very few people that know about and will see that place. Aren't you excited?” She grinned widely at me. “I am so excited. I feel like I'm in some sort of secret society.”
