Chapter 40: What does Richard want
Rachael cried her eyes out when her mother was confirmed dead. She saw her whole world shatter before her eyes. She didn't want to believe it, but it was the heartbreaking reality that she had to accept sooner or later.
Andrew didn't try to console her. He let her cry her eyes out while they waited for the doctor to get back with the cause of her death. He felt It would be better if he let her cry her pain away. But there was something he didn't know and that was the fact that the pain couldn't just go away. It was a pain that could most likely linger for the rest of her life.
The doctor came out shortly and Andrew was the first to get up in anticipation. Rachael on the other hand was too broken to pay attention to anything.
"Miss Davies" he called out to Rachael who finally looked at the doctor. Then she stood up.
"How did she die doctor?" Her voice was hoarse from too much crying
The doctor let out a sharp exhale. "It was kind of strange, but I found red markings around her neck which showed she was strangled"
Rachael was taken aback. "What do you mean? She was asleep in the room. I didn't hear any struggles. Her windows were properly shut"
"I have no idea how this happened, but I think it's best if this case is taken to the police for proper investigation. Once again, I'm deeply sorry for your loss, Miss Davies" he said and left.
Rachael slipped to the floor with widened eyes. The tears couldn't be tamed. It soaked her eyes and cheeks, flowing down to her neck.
"Come on Rachael let's go," Andrew said to her.
"Don't you get it? I have nobody. The only person I have is gone. What is the point of living again? Andrew tell me" she cried uncontrollably.
"Rachael, we can talk when we get home. If you want justice for your mother, you won't sit here and cry"
"What do you want me to do?" She cleaned her eyes and looked up at him.
"Let's go home, get settled. Then we can report to the police as soon as you get a hold of yourself"
Rachael stood up. " No, Let's go now"
"No Rachael, we are going home. At least let's see what we can find by ourselves okay?" he assured her and she reluctantly went with his plan instead.
They got home and Rachael found out that the window she was certain was locked had been forced open. All this was crazy. Who would be so heartless to kill an innocent woman? There was only one person capable of doing that and it was Richard. Her blood boiled.
*****
Rachael held her steering wheel, driving at full speed. She received a call from the doctors that Xavier was awake. She was too numb to feel happy, but she thanked the heavens that he recovered.
The moment she got out of her car, she walked inside the hospital as quickly as possible. She anticipated seeing Xavier due to how long he had been in a coma.
"Xavier Callum" she repeated to the receptionist who didn't hear her the first time.
"Oh yes, you can go"
Her heart leaped for joy as she made her way to the new room he was admitted to. She walked inside the room without knocking.
Xavier was awake with Bella by his side. Rachael tried to smile at him, but her cheeks felt too numb from crying. Bella, who had a smile on her face, frowned as soon as she saw Rachael.
"I don't want her here," she said to Xavier. It was funny how she didn't say anything to Rachael the first time she saw her with Xavier, but now she wanted to make a scene.
"It's fine Bella" he smiled at Rachael, but the smile faded when he saw the agony in her eyes. "I told you she didn't do it" he reassured Bella who scoffed.
"Well until she is proven innocent in court, I don't want to see her face" with that said, Bella grabbed her bag and marched out, not without giving Rachael a deadly glare.
"Come" Xavier beckoned softly and she walked to sit on the small space he created on his bed. "What is it?" He held her hands.
That question brought tears to her eyes once more. "My mum passed out yesterday," she said amidst a sob. She couldn't contain her tears.
Xavier was taken aback. "How did she die?"
"The doctor said she was strangled" She buried her face in her palm "I don't know Xavier, I don't know who would try to kill someone as innocent as my mother. Andrew said we should go to the police"
"No," he said.
"What?"
"Don't go to the police. I'll take care of this"
"Do you think it's Richard?"
"Probably, but I will find out"
She looked at the injury in his stomach. "Does it hurt?"
He humphed, following her eyes. "It's nothing," he reassured her.
"Have you gotten shot before?"
"Yes, I have. It's no new thing"
" Why does Richard hate you so much?"
He thought for a while. "I don't know. Envy maybe. He is just a freak that gets insane when doesn't get what he wants.
"What does he want?"
"He wants me dead" he looked at her and held her hands again. "I'm sorry about your mother" he felt guilty because there was a possibility that her mother's death could be because of him. If Richard did it, it just confirmed Xavier's belief that he didn't have a heart. He could go to any length just to get what he wants.
"A freak broke into my house and killed himself, the night she was murdered"
"Someone broke into your house?" he sounded surprised.
"Yes and acted so cruel. I thought he was going to shoot me, but he shot himself instead "
"Rachael I don't think staying at your house is safe for now" he muttered. "You can stay at my house until I am sure of your safety"
