Chapter 99: The Shattering
The shadows hit me. Hard. Like whips. Like ice. They wrapped around my arms. My legs. My neck. Tight. Squeezing.
I gasped. Air stopped. My lungs burned. The cold went into my bones. Into my blood. It felt like dying. Like freezing.
But I did not fight the cold. I fought with it.
I was gray. I was static. I was void.
I let the shadows in.
And then... I exploded.
Blue lightning. White fire. Gray noise. It burst from my skin. From my hands. From my eyes.
The shadows shrieked. A high, terrible sound. Like glass breaking. Like metal tearing. They burned. Where the static touched them. They pulled back. Writhing. Smoking.
I fell to the floor. Gasping. Coughing. My body shook. Violent. Uncontrolled.
The gray had spread. To my chest. To my stomach. My heart beat slow. Thump... pause... thump. But the power was fast. Wild. Dangerous.
Clara crawled to me. Her face was pale. Scared. "Selena!" she cried. "Stop! You are burning up!"
"I am okay," I lied. My voice was static. Crackling. Broken.
I stood up. My legs were weak. But I stood.
I looked at Damian.
He hung in the center. Chained by shadows. Thick. Oily. Pulsing. He watched me. His blue eyes were wide. Terrified. Not for himself. For me.
No, he mouthed. Too much.
I ignored him. I walked to the edge of the pit. The purple light glowed. Brighter. Angry. The heartbeat was loud. Thump. Thump. Thump.
Faster now.
The Father was waking. Feeding on Damian. Using his pain to break free.
I had to stop it.
I raised my hands. Gray. Sparking. Blue lightning jumped between my fingers.
"Let him go," I shouted. My voice echoed. In the cavern. Loud. Powerful.
The shadows laughed. A low, rumbling sound. Like thunder. Like stones grinding.
He is ours, the voices whispered. He is the anchor. He is the food.
"No," I said. "He is mine."
I jumped.
Into the pit.
Not down. Across.
The wind caught me. Lifted me. Carried me. Over the purple haze. Over the swirling ink.
I landed on the platform. Where Damian hung. Close. Too close.
The heat was intense. Burning. The smell of ozone was thick. Choking.
Damian struggled. Against the chains. "Selena," he gasped. His voice was weak. Dry. "Go. Please."
"I am not leaving you," I said.
I reached out. To touch the chains.
The shadows lashed out. Hit my arms. Burned. Pain. Sharp. Deep.
But I did not pull back. I pushed forward.
My gray hands touched the oily black chains.
Contact.
Shock.
Violent.
The static met the shadow. Fire met ice. Light met dark.
A scream tore from my throat. Not human. Animal. Pure pain.
The chains vibrated. Shook. Cracked.
Black lines appeared. On the oily surface. Like glass. Like ice.
Crack.
Crack.
Crack.
The shadows tried to hold. Tightened. Squeezed Damian. He groaned. In agony.
"Hold on," I gritted out. Teeth clenched. Eyes shut. Tears flew. Evaporated. Into steam.
I poured everything into the touch. My love. My grief. My memory. My life.
The gray spread. Fast. Over my shoulders. My neck. My face.
I was becoming pure energy. Pure void.
And the chains... shattered.
Boom.
A shockwave. Purple and blue. Mixed. Exploded outward.
The shadows broke. Into dust. Into smoke. Gone.
Damian fell.
Forward.
Into my arms.
He was heavy. Dead weight. Cold. Skin like ice. Bones like glass.
I held him. Tight. Kneeling on the platform.
"Damian," I sobbed. "I have you."
He opened his eyes. Blue. Faint. Flickering.
He looked at me. Really looked. Saw the gray. Saw the static. Saw the death.
"You..." he whispered. "You are... fading."
"I don't care," I said. I kissed his forehead. Cold. "We go home."
I tried to stand. To lift him.
But the mountain shook.
Violent.
The ceiling cracked. Rocks fell. Dust rained down.
The purple light in the pit dimmed. But the darkness grew. Deeper. Heavier.
Without the chains... without the anchor... the void was unstable.
Damian grabbed my arm. Weak. But firm.
"No," he said. His voice was stronger. Clearer. "Look."
He pointed. At the pit.
The bottom was opening. A hole. Black. Endless.
The void was returning.
If we left... if Damian left... the anchor would be gone. The void would consume the world. The white would return. The pack would die. Clara would die.
Damian knew it.
He pulled away. From my arms. Stood up. Shaky. Weak. Naked. Broken.
But he stood.
"Damian," I cried. "No. We go together."
He shook his head. Sad. Final.
"I cannot," he said. "I am the anchor. If I leave... the world ends."
"I will help you," I said. I stood up. Gray hands reaching. "We hold it together."
"No," he said. "You are human. You are fading. If you stay... you vanish. And I... I cannot hold it alone forever. But I can hold it long enough. For you to escape."
The ceiling cracked louder. A large rock fell. Near us. Crash.
"Go!" he shouted.
He pushed me. Hard. Away from the edge. Away from the pit.
I flew. Back. Toward the tunnel. Toward Clara.
"Damian!" I screamed.
He turned. Back to the pit. Back to the void.
He spread his arms. Wide. Embracing the darkness.
"I will hold it!" he shouted. His voice roared. Over the thunder. Over the crashing rocks. "Go!"
More rocks fell. Blocking the view. Blocking the path.
Clara grabbed me. Pulled me. "Selena! We must go! Now!"
Elias was awake. He limped. Toward us. Grabbed my other arm.
They dragged me. Away. From the edge. From Damian.
I fought. Screamed. Cried.
But they were strong. And I was weak. Fading.
We ran. Through the tunnel. Through the falling dust. Through the dark.
Behind us... the mountain groaned.
A final, terrible sound.
And then... silence.
As we burst out. Into the daylight. Behind the waterfall.
The entrance collapsed.
Rocks. Dirt. Water.
Sealing the cave.
Sealing Damian.
Inside.
Forever.
I fell. To my knees. On the wet grass.
Gasping. Sobbing.
The gray static faded. Slowly. Receding. From my face. My neck.
But the hole remained.
In my chest.
Empty.
Cold.
Dead.
Damian was gone.
Again.
And this time...
There was no wind.
No whisper.
No hope.
Just the sound of the waterfall.
And my own broken heart.
