Chapter 107: The Shadow Hunters
The shadows did not leave. They waited. In the dark. Between the twisted trees. Watching. Waiting.
Elias held his sword. Steel. Sharp. Ready. His gold eyes scanned the darkness. Calm. Focused.
I stood beside him. My body burned. The void outside the boundary was strong. It pulled at my black skin. Tried to tear me apart. Pain. Constant. Sharp. Like needles. Like fire.
But I did not show it. I could not. Weakness meant death.
"Stay close," Elias whispered. "Do not let them surround us."
I nodded. My hands sparked. Blue. White. Violent. I was ready.
A shadow moved. Fast. From the left.
It lunged. At Elias.
Elias swung. Sword flashed. Silver arc.
The blade cut through the shadow. Clean. Silent.
The shadow split. Into two. Then four. Then eight.
They did not die. They multiplied.
More shadows came. From the right. From behind. From above. Detaching from the branches. Sliding from the roots.
They circled us. A ring of black. Faceless. Endless.
I raised my hands. Static exploded. Blue lightning. White fire.
I pushed. A wave of energy. Outward.
The shadows hit the wave. Hissed. Screamed. A sound like tearing metal.
They dissolved. Into smoke. Into mist. Gone.
For a second. Silence.
Then, the smoke gathered. Reformed. The shadows returned. Whole. Unharmed.
They laughed. A low, rumbling sound. Like thunder. Like stones grinding.
Weak, they whispered. Futile.
Elias frowned. "They do not die," he said. "They are not flesh. They are energy. Void."
"How do we stop them?" I asked. My voice was static. Broken.
"We don't," Elias said. "We survive. We move."
He charged. Sword swinging. Cutting. Pushing the shadows back. Creating a path.
I followed. Sparking. Burning. Every step hurt. The void inside me reacted to the void outside. It wanted to merge. To join them. To become one.
I fought it. Held my form. Held my mind.
Selena, I thought. Remember who you are.
But the memories were fading. Gray. Distant.
A shadow lunged. At my back.
I spun. Hands raised. Static blast.
The shadow exploded. Smoke. Mist.
But as it faded... I felt it. Inside me. A piece of it. Stuck. In my black skin.
My arm turned darker. Blacker. Like ink. Like night.
The power grew. Stronger. Wilder. But so did the emptiness.
I was becoming them.
Elias saw it. He looked at my arm. Worried.
"Selena!" he shouted. "Control it! Do not let it take you!"
"I am trying!" I cried. Tears fell. Hot. Evaporated. On my black cheeks.
Another wave of shadows. Larger. Taller.
They attacked. Together. A storm of black.
Elias fought. Steel flashing. Fire sparking. He was human. Strong. Skilled. But he was one. They were many.
I had to help.
I closed my eyes. Reached deep. Into the void. Into the bond.
I pulled. The power. The static. The cold.
And I released it.
A scream tore from my throat. Not human. Animal. Pure energy.
Blue white light exploded. From my body. In all directions.
The shadows vaporized. Instantly. Gone.
The trees shook. Leaves fell. Branches broke.
Silence.
Heavy. Thick.
I fell. To my knees. Gasping. Weak.
My body was black. Completely. From head to toe. No gray. No skin. Just void. Just static.
I looked at my hands. They were transparent. Faint. I could see the ground through them.
I was fading. Fast.
Elias ran to me. He did not touch me. He knew it would burn.
"Selena," he said. Breathless. "You are losing yourself."
"I know," I whispered. My voice was echoey. Hollow. "But they are gone."
"For now," Elias said. He looked around. The forest was empty. No shadows. No movement.
"But they will return," he said. "They are infinite. They are testing you. Measuring your power."
"Why?" I asked.
"To see if you are worthy," Elias said. "To see if you can hold the void. Or if it will consume you."
Before I could answer... a shadow formed. In front of us.
Small. Thin. Human shape.
It did not attack. It stood still. Watching.
Then, it spoke.
Voice layered. Static. Hollow.
But familiar.
Turn back, Selena.
My heart stopped. Thump... pause...
It was Damian’s voice.
I am safe, the shadow said. Do not come. It is a trap. Go home. Live.
Tears fell. Again. Evaporated.
"Damian?" I whispered. Hope. Painful. Sharp.
No, the shadow said. I am gone. Let me go. Save yourself.
Elias stepped forward. Sword raised. "It is a trick, Selena. Do not listen."
"But it sounds like him," I cried. "It feels like him."
It is not me, the shadow said. I am at peace. You are in pain. Stop. Please.
The shadow reached out. Hand made of smoke. Toward my face.
I wanted to touch it. To feel him. One last time.
But Elias grabbed my arm. Pulled me back. Hard.
"It is a lie," Elias shouted. "The Keeper is using your love against you. To stop you. To keep you here."
The shadow smiled. Sad. Cold.
He is right, it said. But does it matter? Love is pain. Let it end.
Then it vanished. Into the trees. Into the dark.
I stood there. Shaking. Confused.
Was it real? Was Damian safe? Or was it a trap?
I did not know.
But the pain remained. The burning. The fading.
And the leaf in my pocket. Still humming. Still pointing North.
Find me.
If Damian was safe... why did the leaf call?
If it was a trap... why did it feel so real?
I looked at Elias. His face was grim. Serious.
"We must keep moving," he said. "The shadows will return. Stronger. Next time."
I nodded. Slow. Weak.
I stood up. Black body. Transparent hands. Hollow heart.
And we walked on.
Into the doubt.
Into the dark.
Toward the tower.
Toward the truth.
Or the end.
