Chapter 103: Kade
I’d barely finished lunch with Mike when Noah sent me a text.
I was standing on the sidewalk outside of a little pizza place not too far from the airport. Mike had wanted someplace quiet and private. So the Skyhouse was out.
Since I’d driven, Mike stood next to me. Waiting.
At the Skyhouse, we were likely to run into anyone from the office, especially Noah or Quinn or even Madison.
The three people who would ask too many questions to keep Mike’s meeting private.
NOAH: I noticed your schedule is clear today and tomorrow. I need you to take a flight.
“Hold on,” I said. “I need to answer this.”
“Take your time,” Mike said. “I’m in no hurry.”
ME: Ok. When do I leave?
NOAH: ASAP. A client has a family emergency.
Damn. No matter where it was, there was no way I was going to get back in time to take Madison to dinner.
“Come on,” I said. “Might as well head back to the airport. I’ve got an unexpected flight.”
“The name of the game,” Mike said.
“Yeah.” We got in the car and turned on the air conditioning.
I sent Noah another text before backing out.
ME: Where to?
NOAH: Boston.
My stomach clenched. Now I was certain. Not only was I not going to be home for dinner, but this was also going to be an overnight trip.
“Looks like I’m flying to Boston today,” I said.
“I understand.” Mike pulled out his own cell phone. Then glanced back over at me. “It’s good to have options, isn’t it?”
“Maybe.” I pulled into traffic.
Everything was so easy for Mike.
“You sure Noah doesn’t know you’re talking to me?” I asked as the airport came into sight up ahead.
Sending me on a trip to Boston sure sounded like some kind of punishment.
“I’m positive,” Mike said. “I just told him I had a couple of options and would get back to him before we made any decisions.”
“Huh.” I parked the car.
I had another message from Noah.
NOAH: You could be there for several days.
This week was definitely not turning out the way I’d planned.
Not even close.
NOAH: I’m sorry. You’re the only one who can do it. I’d go myself, but I have an appointment.
An appointment. Madison had said that Noah’s medical issue was resolved.
Maybe he hadn’t told her everything.
No matter. I couldn’t leave Noah in the lurch.
