Chapter 21: Trial by Reality TV

Scarlett's POV

Madison's words hit me like a physical blow. "What are you saying?"

"I'm saying maybe Luna wasn't the only one manipulating people." Madison's eyes were cold. "Maybe her best friend was in on it from the beginning."

"That's insane!" I stepped toward her, but she backed away.

"Is it? You brought drama from day one. You sabotaged relationships. You created chaos." Madison looked around at the other contestants. "What if that was the plan all along? What if you and Luna were working together to create content for her show?"

"I didn't know about Luna's show! I had no idea she was—"

"Convenient," Marcus interrupted. "Your best friend orchestrates everything and you're completely clueless?"

"I was a victim too!"

"Were you?" David crossed his arms. "Or are you just a really good actress?"

The room was closing in. Everyone staring at me with suspicion and anger.

"Scarlett would never do that," Kai said firmly. "I know her."

"Do you?" Madison turned on him. "Five years ago, she left you without explanation. Last week, she lied about being engaged. Yesterday, she admitted she was pregnant and never told you. How well do you actually know her, Kai?"

The words hung in the air like accusations. Kai's face went pale.

"That's different," he said, but his voice was less certain.

"Is it? She's been lying to you for years. Why would she suddenly start telling the truth now?"

"Because I love him!" The words burst out before I could stop them. "I've always loved him! That's why I left! That's why I lied! I was trying to protect him!"

"Or you were trying to protect yourself," Madison said quietly. "From the consequences of your manipulation."

I looked at Kai, desperate for him to believe me. To defend me. To choose me.

But doubt flickered in his eyes. Just for a second. But I saw it.

"Kai," I whispered. "Please. You know me. You know I wouldn't—"

"I thought I knew you five years ago too," he said slowly. "But you left. You kept secrets. You made choices for both of us without asking."

"That's not the same as—"

"Isn't it?" His voice was tired. "How do I know what's real with you anymore? How do I know any of this is real?"

The question shattered something inside me. Because he was right. I'd lied so much, hidden so much, that even the truth sounded like another manipulation.

"I think Scarlett should leave," Marcus said. "For everyone's safety."

"I second that," David agreed.

One by one, the remaining contestants voted. Only Kai abstained.

"You can't kick me out," I said desperately. "The contract—"

"The contract's invalid now that the producers have been arrested," Madison said. "We checked. We're all free to go. No penalties. No obligations."

Freedom. The word should have felt like salvation. Instead, it felt like exile.

"So that's it?" I looked around the room. "You're all just going to believe I'm some mastermind who planned all this?"

"What else are we supposed to believe?" Marcus asked. "Your best friend admits to years of manipulation and you had no idea? That's not believable."

"But it's the truth!"

"Your truth changes every day," Madison said coldly.

I had no defense. No proof. Nothing but my word, which nobody believed anymore.

"Fine," I said quietly. "I'll leave. Tonight. You'll never have to see me again."

I turned to go, but Kai caught my arm.

"Wait. Don't go."

"Why not? Nobody wants me here."

"I want you here." He looked at the others. "And I don't care what anyone thinks. Scarlett's not perfect. She's made mistakes. But she's not a manipulative monster. She's just scared."

"Scared of what?" Madison demanded.

"Of being happy," Kai said simply. "Of believing she deserves good things. Of trusting that people will love her despite her flaws."

His words hit too close to home. Tears burned my eyes.

"That's very romantic," Madison said. "But it doesn't change the facts. Luna manipulated everyone. And Scarlett's her best friend."

"Was her best friend," I corrected. "After this, I never want to see Luna again."

"How convenient," Marcus muttered.

"You know what? I'm done defending myself." I pulled away from Kai. "Believe what you want. I know the truth. I know I was used and betrayed just like all of you. If you can't see that, then maybe I don't want to stay."

I headed for the stairs. This time, Kai didn't stop me.

In my room, I pulled out my suitcase again. Started packing for the second time in one day. This nightmare was finally ending.

A knock on the door. I expected Kai, but Madison entered instead.

"We need to talk," she said, closing the door.

"I have nothing to say to you."

"Well, I have something to say to you." Madison sat on my bed. "About Kai."

"What about him?"

"He's defending you because he still has feelings for you. But those feelings are based on who you used to be. Not who you are now."

"And who am I now?"

"I don't know. Neither does he. That's the problem." Madison looked at me with something like pity. "He wants to believe you're the same girl he fell in love with. But you're not. You're someone who's capable of lying to the person they love for years."

"I lied to protect him!"

"You lied to protect yourself," Madison corrected. "From having to face the consequences of your choices. From having to be vulnerable. From risking real intimacy."

Her words cut because they were true. At least partly true.

"Why are you telling me this?" I asked.

"Because Kai deserves better." Madison stood up. "He deserves someone who's honest with him. Someone who doesn't keep secrets. Someone who's brave enough to stay instead of running away."

"Someone like you?"

"Maybe." Madison didn't look away. "I care about him. And I think I could make him happy. If you weren't here confusing everything."

"So you want me to leave."

"I want you to do what's best for him. If you really love Kai, you'll walk away and let him move on."

After she left, I sat on my bed staring at my half-packed suitcase. Was she right? Would Kai be better off without me?

My phone buzzed. Text from Kai: Don't leave. Please. We can figure this out.

Another text, this one from an unknown number: Madison's right. You're toxic. Leave before you destroy him completely.

Then another: Everyone would be happier if you were gone.

And another: You don't deserve him. You never did.

The messages kept coming. Anonymous hatred pouring into my phone.

I turned it off and threw it across the room.

A softer knock this time. Kai entered without waiting for permission.

"I heard Madison was here," he said. "What did she say?"

"The truth. That I'm a liar who doesn't deserve you."

"That's not true."

"Isn't it? I lied about the pregnancy. About the engagement. About why I left. I've been lying for five years, Kai. Maybe everyone's right to hate me."

"I don't hate you." He sat beside me. "I'm angry and confused and hurt. But I don't hate you."

"Maybe you should."

"Why? Because loving you is easier when you're perfect? When you never make mistakes?" Kai took my hand. "I'm not perfect either, Scarlett. I wrote songs about you for five years instead of moving on. I came on this show hoping to find you. I've been just as stuck in the past as you have."

"But you didn't lie—"

"I lied to Madison. Told her I was interested when I was really just using her to get over you. That's not exactly honest."

"That's different."

"It's all the same. We're all just people trying to survive our mistakes." He squeezed my hand. "The question is, do we survive them together or apart?"

I wanted to believe him. Wanted to trust that we could fix what was broken.

But Madison's words echoed in my head. Maybe you don't know her as well as you think.

"I need time," I said. "To figure out who I am without all the lies and manipulation. To figure out if I'm even capable of the kind of honesty you deserve."

"How much time?"

"I don't know. Maybe forever."

Kai's face fell, but he nodded. "Then I'll wait. However long it takes."

After he left, I finished packing. Tomorrow, I'd leave this nightmare behind. Start over somewhere new. Figure out how to be the person I wanted to be instead of the person fear had made me.

I was almost asleep when I heard something slide under my door.

A piece of paper.

I picked it up, my hands shaking.

The message was typed in bold letters: "LEAVE NOW OR THINGS GET WORSE."

No signature. No explanation. Just a threat.

I opened my door and looked down the hallway. Empty. Whoever had delivered the note was already gone.

My phone buzzed even though I'd turned it off. It had turned itself back on somehow. A new message glowed on the screen.

From Luna's number.

But Luna was in the hospital. Wasn't she?

I opened the message with trembling fingers.

"You should have left when you had the chance. Now you're going to pay for all your lies. Just like I paid. Just like we all pay in the end. Sleep well, Scarlett. It might be your last peaceful night."

The message deleted itself as I watched. Like it had never existed.

I ran to Kai's room and pounded on his door.

"Kai! Kai, open up!"

He opened the door, confused and worried. "What's wrong?"

"Someone's threatening me. Luna sent a message and—"

"Luna's in the hospital under police guard. She can't send messages."

"But I saw it! It was from her number!"

"Scarlett, calm down—"

"I'm not crazy!" I showed him my phone. But the message was gone. The note in my hand was gone too. I'd dropped it somewhere in the hallway and now it had vanished.

"There was a note. Someone slid it under my door. It said to leave or things would get worse."

Kai looked at me with concern. Maybe pity. "You're exhausted. Stressed. Maybe you imagined—"

"I didn't imagine anything!" But even I could hear how unhinged I sounded.

"Okay. Okay, I believe you." But his eyes said otherwise.

He walked me back to my room. Checked under the door for notes. Found nothing.

"Try to sleep," he said gently. "We'll figure everything out tomorrow."

After he left, I locked my door and pushed a chair against it.

But I knew I wouldn't sleep. Because someone was threatening me. Someone wanted me gone.

And nobody believed me anymore.

I was truly alone.
