CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

Inside the kitchen, the aftermath of the party was even more chaotic than I had anticipated. Dirty dishes were piled high, and food scraps littered the countertops. The once-pristine floor was now sticky and covered in spilled drinks. The cluttered chaos of pots, pans, and utensils hinted at the culinary feats that had taken place earlier in the evening.

My fellow servants were already hard at work, each of us silently acknowledging the mammoth task that lay before us. It was a stark contrast to the atmosphere of the party itself, where laughter and music had filled the air. Now, the only sounds were the clinking of dishes and the occasional sigh of exhaustion.

I joined the efforts, taking on the task of clearing the used dishes and silverware from the long banquet tables. The weight of the porcelain plates and the clatter of cutlery served as a harsh reminder of the events that had transpired earlier in the evening. Each dish I picked up bore traces of the elaborate dishes that had been meticulously prepared to delight the guests. It was a stark reminder of the contrast between the opulence of the party and the unseen labor that went into making it a reality.

As I worked, I couldn't help but reflect on the nature of my role as a servant. My existence was defined by the tasks I performed behind the scenes, tasks that often went unnoticed and unappreciated. The grandeur of the party was a facade, a carefully constructed illusion of perfection that belied the hard work and dedication of those who toiled behind the scenes to make it a reality.

The hours passed slowly, and the kitchen began to take on a semblance of order once more. The piles of dirty dishes dwindled, and the once-sticky floor regained its cleanliness. It was a laborious process, one that demanded both physical and mental endurance. Yet, there was a quiet satisfaction in seeing the chaos gradually transform into order, a reminder of the resilience and diligence of the servants who made it happen.

As I wiped down the last table and stacked the final set of clean dishes, I couldn't help but feel a sense of accomplishment. The party may have ended, but the sense of unity and purpose that had defined our collective efforts lingered. It was a reminder that, despite our roles as servants, we played an integral part in the grand tapestry of the castle's events.

With the kitchen now restored to its usual state of tidiness, we made our way to our respective rooms, the quietude of the castle once again enveloped us. The halls, now devoid of guests and their revelry, were tranquil, a stark contrast to the lively atmosphere that had characterized them earlier.

As I entered my modest room and settled into my small cot, I couldn't help but reflect on the events of the evening. It had been a rollercoaster of emotions, from the initial embarrassment and humiliation to the satisfaction of a job well done.

As I was on the verge of drifting into slumber, when a sudden knock echoed through my room, jolting me awake. Startled, I hurriedly rose from my cot and moved toward the door to see who stood on the other side. It was a guard, his demeanour stern and unyielding.

"The Alpha needs you in his chambers right away," he declared without preamble. The mere mention of the Alpha sent a shiver down my spine. Memories of a previous encounter with him flooded my mind, and my heart quickened its pace. Being summoned by the Alpha was never a harbinger of good news, and fear gnawed at me as I braced myself to heed his summons.YES! It just dawned on me, he had come to stand beside Diana in an attempt to console the guest from earlier but I was too embarrassed to spare him a look then.

The guard observed me intently, his expression devoid of sympathy or understanding. He offered no further words, merely gesturing for me to follow him toward the Alpha's chambers. Each step we took drew me closer to what I knew would be a formidable meeting.

The hallway we traversed was dimly lit, with torches casting flickering shadows on the stone walls. Silence enveloped us, broken only by the rhythmic echo of our footsteps. My anxiety grew with each passing moment as we neared the Alpha's chambers.

My trembling hand hovered just inches away from the imposing door marked with the Alpha's symbol—the highest authority in our pack. Anxiety clamped onto my heart like a vice, rendering me frozen. Uncertainty flooded my mind,I could feel my pulse pounding in my ears, and I grappled with the paralysing fear of the unknown. A summons to the Alpha's chamber was always shrouded in ominous secrecy.

My knuckles grazed the cold door surface, yet I hesitated to knock. Fear gripped me, causing my breaths to become shallow and uneven. What could possibly be so urgent that the Alpha required my presence? Whispers and rumours about what transpired behind these imposing doors filled my thoughts, but the truth remained an enigmatic puzzle.

After an eternity of contemplation, I summoned my last ounce of courage and gently tapped my knuckles against the formidable door. Silence followed, and my heart thundered in my chest as I awaited a response. Then, a voice, cold and devoid of empathy, sliced through the air.

"Who is there?" it demanded.

My voice quivered as I replied, "It's Hailey. I was told my presence is needed". I couldn't hide the fear in my voice, and it betrayed my trembling nerves.

The door opened. I hesitantly made my way through. The room was dark and scary. I left the door a bit open, just in case.

"Why are you by the door? You better start moving!" the Alpha declared.
