Chapter 6: Dangerous Creatures

A Hybrid was a race different from any supernatural being; they were extremely difficult to reproduce. Werewolves and vampires were the only supernatural beings still in existence with the highest population on Earth, at least so they thought. It was really easy for them to blend in with humans; no matter how hard you tried to find the difference between both supernatural races and the human race, it would be difficult to tell them apart.

Creating a hybrid was against the law of both the vampires and werewolves for two major reasons. One was due to the fact that werewolves and vampires couldn't coexist with each other, and the second reason was, depending on whose side the hybrid would be on, there could be a shift in power which could lead to the annihilation of the other race.

A lot of people would normally ask, if hybrids were so powerful, why didn't the vampires and werewolves just come together and reproduce more hybrids? First, there was the fact that both races considered themselves mortal enemies, with one trying to prove they were stronger than the other; second was that even if both races would come together to make a hybrid, the mother who was bearing the hybrid child would suffer from severe pain and eventually die. With this fact established, many avoided a relationship with the opposite race for fear of dying from childbirth.

The werewolves didn't know what the vampires were planning, but they believed it wasn't good. It was better if they had the hybrid; that way, they would feel safe, and their existence would not be threatened by the vampires.

It was getting late, and neither Ericka nor the twins were home yet. Well, for Ericka, it was expected, but her daughters? Sage had just finished making dinner when the door opened. She breathed a sigh of relief, thinking the twins had come back home.

"Finally, where have you girls been?" Sage asked while she walked out of the kitchen to meet who had just stepped in. She was shocked when she saw who it was.

Ericka had a frown on her face as she looked at Sage before proceeding to scan the room with her eyes.

"Where are the twins?" Ericka asked the now nervous Sage. Sage didn't know how to explain that she hadn't come across the twins at school today, even if they had most classes together and also how she didn't come home to meet them.

She was already taking too long to reply. "I have not set my eyes on them since this morning when they left for school, "Sage answered truthfully without many details. Ericka was about to say something when the door to the living room opened again, and the twins walked in with their arms locked together as they both giggled at something Clara had said.

"Kyle was so hot when he effortlessly dived into the pool," Clara kept talking, unaware of Ericka and Sage's presence."Mother!" June exclaimed when she laid her eyes on Ericka. She normally did that when she was caught off guard when committing an offense. Clara turned and found their mother staring them dead in the eyes; she was as shocked as her carbon copy beside her.

Sage couldn't help but smirk at the situation her cousins were in.

"Where have you been?" Ericka questioned, still with a frown on her face.

"We've been in school, Mom," Clara replied, keeping a straight face. Although she was composed, June was not. She couldn't keep her eyes still; they kept dancing as she tried to avoid her mother's gaze.

"You should ask Sage where she was because we didn't see her at school today.

"Sage was extremely shocked that Clara would shift her problems so easily, even while she had been caught in the act.

"Do we now go to different schools or...?" Sage could feel Ericka's side glance at her, so she stopped before she said anything to annoy her.

"June, answer my question," Ericka said as she focused her gaze on June. June couldn't answer straight away; fear was written all over her face. If Ericka was going to find out the truth, June was her best bet.

June wasn't scared of being honest with Ericka; she was more scared of what Clara would do to her, especially since she had already lied. You see, Clara was the foundation of their social life, the reason why they were both popular. The only reason why June was also liked by students from school and was being invited to parties was all because of her extroverted twin. Although June was a shy type, she loved the life of fame she lived with her sister, but of course, when it came to choosing between Clara and June, it was clear that everyone would choose Clara. After all, she was the one that everyone loved to vibe with. If Clara was to have an issue with June, everyone would support Clara, even if she was wrong. June's whole social life could end if Clara wanted, and June didn't want to give up that lifestyle just yet.

"We had a project to finish at school; that's why we're home late," Clara quickly answered the question that had been directed to June.

"Project? on the first day of school?" Sage butted in. "You have to lie better than that if you want your mom to believe you.

"Shut up, Sage," Clara snapped. She was clearly annoyed that Sage had been butting in.

"Quiet, you two," Ericka cut in; the room was silent for a second until there was a bark from the dining room behind Ericka and Sage.

"Sage, take that dog out for a walk," Ericka said. Sage did as she was told. She didn't bother taking a leash as she passed the twins and held the door open for the dog to head out first before following closely behind it.

She would have loved to see how Ericka handled the twins, but she had to walk Bruno.

Everywhere was dark; only the moon provided some form of light so she could see the path she was walking on. While walking, her mind was filled with events that happened throughout the day. She felt more confident than she had felt for the past seventeen years.

"Woof." Sage raised her head to look at her dog that had just barked; she instantly got worried as he wasn't walking ahead of her anymore. She looked around, searching the area for her dog, but he was nowhere to be found.

"Bruno...Brunooo." Sage called out. She was about to run up the path to search for him, but she heard him bark again. This time the sound came from her left side. Immediately she turned her head in that direction. Her eyes widened in shock as she stared into the thick woods. Sage hesitated a bit before walking into the woods in search of Bruno.

Bruno kept barking, and she followed the direction of the sound to get to him. She looked back in order to mark the areas she had passed. It was then she noticed she couldn't see the outline of the path she had derailed from.

At this point, Sage didn't know how far into the woods she was, but she kept going forward because she could hear Bruno's barks clearer now.

"Bruno!.. I'm so glad I found you," Sage exclaimed. Bruno sat with his back to Sage with his head raised up. Sage noticed that Bruno was barking at something. She didn't notice it when she arrived, but seeing that Bruno kept barking and didn't budge at the sound of her voice, she looked ahead of her. Her mouth dropped as she stumbled backward and fell on her butt.

Standing right in front of Bruno was a wolf. As Sage fell, it growled at her, revealing a set of razor-sharp teeth.

'Is this a wolf?,' Sage wondered as this wolf was huge. It was three times or even more times larger than an average wolf.

'What does this thing feed on?' Sage thought in fear as she wondered if she was going to be its next meal.

'Maybe if I stay still, it would lose interest in me.'Sage had stayed still for a while, in hopes that the wolf would go away, but the wolf started to approach her, and she realized her plan would never work.

"Stay back; don't come any closer," Sage warned the wolf with a shaky voice. I'm warning you, bad wolf." An object pierced her right palm as she was struggling to drag herself backward. She looked to her side and picked up the twig that had pierced through her skin; she was now bleeding, but she had a bigger problem to worry about.

"I have a twig and I'm not scared to use it," Sage said, pointing the twig towards the wolf. She had learned a long time ago that wolves could sense fear, so she tried hard to mask her fear.

Sage continued to drag herself backward, but the wolf kept walking towards her. She could no longer see Bruno; the huge wolf was obstructing her view.

Her hands which had been shaking from fear behind her collapsed, and she fell with her back lying flat on the ground and her knees propped up slightly.

Now the wolf was above her. She swallowed hard as she stared into the wolf's eye."If you're looking for who or what to feast on, I'm a bad choice.

" Sage didn't know why she was talking to the wolf, but she felt if it was this huge, it had to have some form of intelligence.

Sage dangled the twig that was still in her hand in front of the wolf's eye, when she got its attention to the twig, she threw the twig as far as the position she was in would let her. Only the wolf's head followed the twig, and it soon returned its attention to Sage who still lay on her back.

'Well, that's not what happens when I throw a twig for Bruno.

"What's wrong? fetch!...you don't know how to play fetch?" Sage asked, and she sounded as if she was about to cry.

'Did this wolf just smirk?' Sage asked herself. The wolf's lips had moved back on one side of its head, and this made Sage believe that it had smirked. She couldn't confirm if the wolf had actually smirked or if her mind was playing tricks on her, because the wolf had turned around way faster than her eyes could take note of, and it dashed deep into the woods. As strange as everything that had happened was, Sage was relieved that it was over, but she didn't want to assume she was safe now; the wolf might have gone to inform its friends about the meal it found. She quickly picked Bruno who was now staring at her with his tongue out, and ran as fast as her feet could. She had arrived at the front of her home sooner than she expected.

''That's strange; I thought we were way deep into the woods." Sage pushed that thought aside as she focused on Bruno.

"You! Don't you ever go wandering about like that again," Sage scolded. "You almost got me... us killed," Sage said with the imagination of the wolf feasting on Bruno after it was done with her.
