Chapter 151: The War Begins
Chapter 151: The War Begins
Elora's POV
"The shackles of the Abyss have shattered… and my soul now carries your flame."
Lucius tilted his head back, his deep-blue eyes fixed on mine with an unwavering steadiness that held none of the hollow piety the Holy See had drilled into him — only a fierce, absolute conviction burning at its core.
"From this moment forward, the Lucius who served the Holy See is dead. The one standing before you now… is your sworn oath-keeper."
"I will clear every obstacle from your path. With whatever life remains to me, I will atone for every wrong I have committed against you."
I watched him — this man who had pursued us across half a continent, now kneeling in total surrender — and raised an eyebrow. The soul-cleansing had been worth every ounce of effort. We had not only destroyed the Abyss's First Avatar; we had pried loose the most deeply embedded piece from within the enemy's own foundation.
"Get up," I said, keeping my voice flat. "I don't need you throwing yourself on a sword to prove your contrition. What I need is the Holy See's head, and the Abyss's."
Lucius rose. His body was still unsteady, but he held his spine straight. He wiped the last trace of blood from the corner of his mouth, and when his eyes settled on me again, they had gone cold and hard.
"Elora — the soul fragment the First Avatar had embedded in me has been completely incinerated by your dragonfire. That kind of violent disruption travels through the Abyss's collective consciousness network. It's already been transmitted back."
"They know?" I felt my brow tighten.
"They know, and it has sent them into a frenzy." His voice dropped low. "The First Avatar was the central hub of the entire Abyss network. Its damage has already thrown the Holy See and the Abyss completely off their original attack schedule."
He had barely finished speaking when the heavy iron door of the black stone chamber was thrown open.
"Elora!"
Rowan burst through in full plate armor, his face drained to a grayish white, a cold sweat standing out on his brow. Behind him, Gael and Silas came in at a hard pace, each of them wearing an expression I had never seen on them before — tight, grim, stripped of any ease.
"Something's happened." Rowan's hand locked around his sword hilt. "An emergency report just came in from the advance watchtowers on the northern perimeter. The full assault we estimated was still three days out — it's been moved up."
"Twelve Holy Knight Legions, marching in combined formation with Abyss tide forces. They've already crossed the glacier pass. We have three hours at most before their advance units reach the walls."
"That fast?" The words came out quiet and sharp.
"It looks like severing the First Avatar shook something loose in those creatures." Silas gripped his staff, his voice stripped of warmth. "The Holy See has dropped all pretense. They've used forbidden sorcery to convert the entire holy city's civilian population into mindless berserker thralls, and they're driving them forward as a living shield."
"Stand down."
Lucius stepped forward — one measured stride that brought him directly in front of the group. The moment Gael and Rowan registered who it was, their hands snapped to their weapons. They had not forgotten what it had cost them to survive his pursuit.
"Hold," I said, raising a hand. "He's with us."
Lucius paid no attention to the hostility directed at him. He kept his eyes on me and spoke quickly. "Elora, now that the war has moved up, we have to go directly for the source of the Abyss's control. There is no other way."
"The Abyss has three Avatars in total. The one you just destroyed was the First — the Soul Parasite. The remaining two are the Holy See's true reserve, the cards they've been holding back for the final play."
He raised one hand and drew two intricate sigils in the air with his fingertips, the traces hanging briefly in the dim light before dissolving.
"The Second Avatar is called the Flesh Puppeteer. It is currently parasitizing the body of the Holy See's Elder Pope and several of the Cardinal Archbishops. It controls every unit of the Holy See's military force and all of their forbidden array formations. Find the host bodies and destroy them — the Holy Knight Legions will lose their command structure instantly. They will collapse in on themselves."
"And the third?" I pressed.
When the third Avatar came up, something moved through Lucius's expression that he could not entirely suppress — a deep, involuntary dread.
"The Third Avatar… is called the Void Devourer."
"It has no fixed form. It is a primordial beast born from the deepest stratum of the Abyss, and it is currently sealed beneath the Holy See's underground cathedral, in the crypt called the Ten-Thousand-Soul Tomb. The Holy See did not march on the Northern Reach to occupy territory, Elora. They intend to use the blood of every long-lived race and every mortal in this region to complete a supreme sacrifice — one that will draw the Third Avatar fully out of the earth."
"If the Third Avatar achieves full resurrection…" He paused, and the pause itself carried weight. "The entire continent will be consumed. At that point, capturing you becomes only a matter of time. And if the Abyss takes you — if you are made into the sacred vessel through which the Abyss and the True God's power descend — there will be nothing left to salvage."
The air in the black stone chamber went still. What had seemed like a desperate resistance against the Holy See's persecution had revealed itself as something else entirely — a calculated act of annihilation, with the continent itself as the offering.
"Three hours."
I looked down at my open palm. The dragonfire coiled there, restless and alive, pulsing in answer to something moving in my chest that was not quite rage and not quite grief — only the image of Aiden's face, pale and still behind the crystal coffin's surface, and the last thing he had said to me: May your future hold less darkness.
I closed my fingers around the handle of the whip at my hip and looked up.
"If they're this eager to die — then we won't make them wait."
"Notify everyone. The Northern Reach goes to full combat readiness — now."
