Chapter 2
Three days ago, we arrived in the capital. I was driving, with Simon Smith and Hollie Owen in the backseat.
Since it was my first time in the capital and I was unfamiliar with the roads, I followed the GPS and ended up taking the wrong route. By the time we arrived at the mall, the limited-edition handbag had already been bought by someone else.
Simon Smith was furious. "Don't you know how much Hollie loves that bag? I think you did this on purpose!"
A stinging slap landed on my face. I was just about to explain when Hollie Owen interrupted, gently consoling Simon Smith. "Darling, don't be angry. It's just a handbag, and Laura didn't do it on purpose. Please don't argue because of me."
Although this handbag was very meaningful to me, what's done is done. Next time, we just won't let Laura drive."
Though she seemed to be defending me, every word subtly blamed me. As she spoke, her eyes reddened.
"It was you who..."
"Enough! Laura Burke, isn't Hollie pitiful enough? Even jealousy has its limits!" Simon Smith rebuked me before I could finish, shielding Hollie Owen behind him, looking at me as if I were his enemy. But I was his wife!
That night, I booked a separate room for myself and cried all night. Until there was a knock on the door. Simon Smith came in with a bottle of red wine. I thought he had come to apologize, considering we'd been married for ten years and shared some kind of affection. But I overestimated my place in his heart. After drinking the wine, I became dizzy.
He coldly tied me up and threw me into the trunk of the car, his eyes full of disgust and frost. "You knew how much Hollie had been looking forward to this day, yet out of jealousy, you ruined her mood for the entire day."
"If you are this vicious, don't blame me for being cruel."
The trunk was cramped, and I was forcibly stuffed inside, my eyes blindfolded. As soon as the darkness surrounded me, my breathing became shallow, and cold sweat soaked my body. I have claustrophobia, and Simon Smith knew that.
He wanted me dead!
"I beg you, please don't do this to me, Simon. I'll die..." I sobbed and begged, not caring how pathetic I seemed. I called his name, hoping to awaken any sense of conscience within him. But no, he simply ordered coldly, "Gag her. Without my permission, don't let her out."
Then came the heavy sound of the trunk locking. At first, people came to check on me. They were following Simon Smith's orders but were also aware of my status as Mrs. Smith, so they delivered food on time.
Until they saw Simon Smith happily laughing with Hollie Owen, and for three whole days, he never thought of me.
"Do you think Mr. Smith has forgotten about Mrs. Smith?"
"Probably. I wouldn't be surprised if she's no longer on his mind. If that's the case, it's no big deal if we slack off a little. The heat is unbearable today."
"Exactly. I heard the human limit is seven days. Missing a day of meals won't make a difference."
And so, day after day, I was forgotten, suffocating to death in the trunk, becoming nothing but a wandering soul. Meanwhile, Simon Smith was still waiting for my apology. How laughable.
