Chapter 326
The backstage chaos of Paris Fashion Week swirled around Sara like a tornado. Models rushed between makeup stations, stylists shouted instructions in multiple languages, and someone nearby was having a meltdown about a broken heel. But Sara couldn't focus on any of it. The walls of the massive venue seemed to close in with each passing second.
"Five minutes until first walk!" The stage manager's voice pierced through her rising panic.
Her reflection stared back from the makeup mirror, a stranger in couture. The stunning gown that had been pinned and adjusted to perfection now felt like it was suffocating her. Her heart pounded against her ribs as reality crashed in - this wasn't just any show. This was her first major runway appearance since the scandal about her parents broke.
The whispers followed her everywhere backstage:
"That's her, the one whose parents..."
"Can't believe they still let her walk..."
"Wonder if she helped them..."
Her vision blurred. The lights grew too bright, the noise too loud. She needed air, needed to escape, needed.....
"Sara?" Josh materialized beside her station, concern etched on his face. "What's wrong?"
She tried to speak but couldn't force words past the tightness in her throat. Her hands shook as she gripped the vanity edge.
Understanding dawned in his eyes. Without hesitation, he took her arm. "Come with me."
He guided her through the chaos, somehow finding a quiet corner behind racks of clothing. The moment they were hidden from prying eyes, Sara's composure shattered completely.
"I can't-" she gasped, struggling for air. "I can't do this. They're all watching, waiting for me to fail. What if I trip? What if I freeze? What if-"
"Look at me." Josh's voice cut through her spiral. His hands cupped her face, forcing her to meet his gaze. "Breathe with me. In... out... that's it."
She focused on his eyes, trying to match his steady breathing. His thumbs brushed tears from her cheeks, careful not to smudge her makeup.
"Everyone knows," she whispered. "About my parents, about everything. They're all judging-"
"No." His voice came fierce. "They're watching because you're stunning. Because you've earned this spot through talent and hard work. Your parents' crimes have nothing to do with your success."
"But what if-"
"What if you go out there and show them exactly who Sara Brown is? Not a victim, not a criminal's daughter, but a force of nature who refuses to let anyone define her?"
The intensity in his voice made her heart skip for different reasons. His hands still cradled her face, their bodies close in the hidden alcove. For a moment, all her panic receded, replaced by awareness of his proximity.
"Josh..." His name came out barely a whisper.
Something shifted in his expression. His thumb traced her lower lip, feather-light. Sara's breath caught as he leaned closer, all his careful boundaries forgotten in the charged moment.
"Three minutes to places!" The stage manager's voice shattered the spell.
Josh jerked back like he'd been burned, professional mask sliding back into place. But his eyes still held traces of what had almost happened.
"You can do this," he said roughly. "I'll be watching from the wings."
Sara caught his hand before he could retreat completely. "Thank you. For believing in me when I can't believe in myself."
His fingers tightened briefly around hers. "Always."
The word hung between them, heavy with meaning neither dared voice. Then duty called again and they had to return to reality.
Sara took her place in line, heart still racing but for entirely different reasons now. The panic had receded, replaced by determination. Josh believed in her. That would have to be enough.
The music started, pulsing through the speakers. One by one, models stepped onto the runway. Sara counted beats, waiting for her turn.
Just before she stepped out, she caught Josh's eye in the wings. The look they shared carried the weight of everything unsaid, everything they'd almost acknowledged in that hidden moment.
Then it was her turn. Sara stepped into the lights, head high, channeling all her emotions into her walk. The audience disappeared, the whispers faded. There was only the music, the rhythm, and the knowledge that someone believed in her completely.
She owned that runway, turning every step into a declaration. This was who she was, not a victim of circumstances, but a woman who chose her own path.
When she reached the end of the catwalk, time seemed to slow. Cameras flashed like stars, capturing her triumph. In that moment, she felt invincible.
The rest of the show passed in a blur of quick changes and carefully choreographed walks. Only when the final bow was done did Sara let herself breathe normally again.
Backstage erupted in congratulations. Even those who'd whispered earlier now praised her performance. But Sara's eyes sought only one person.
She found Josh in his usual spot, watching from the shadows. Their gazes locked, and for a precious second, his walls came down completely. The pride and longing in his expression made her heart soar.
Then someone called her name for interviews, breaking the moment. By the time she looked back, Josh had disappeared into the crowd.
But something had changed between them. That almost-kiss in the hidden alcove had shattered pretenses they could never fully rebuild.
The question was: what would they do about it now?
