Chapter 325
The grand dining room of the Brown mansion sparkled with its usual Sunday elegance, but tonight the atmosphere crackled with unspoken tension. Crystal glasses clinked too loudly against china plates as the family attempted normal conversation around the elephant in the room.
"Pass the potatoes?" Eva's request broke a particularly heavy silence.
Josh reached for the dish at the same moment as Sara, their fingers brushing. He yanked back as if burned, nearly knocking over his wine glass. Sara's face fell at his reaction, though she tried to hide it.
"I heard your new campaign launches next week," William attempted, watching the interaction with concern.
"Yes," Sara managed, not meeting anyone's eyes. "Josh arranged everything before..." She trailed off, letting the words hang unfinished.
The quadruplets exchanged worried looks. Since that night in the kitchen, Josh had barely spoken to anyone, throwing himself into work and avoiding family gatherings. Only Helena's insistence had dragged him to dinner tonight.
"My tummy hurts," Mia announced suddenly, though her plate was still full.
"Mine too," Leo chimed in quickly.
"And mine!"
"Me too!"
Eva hid a smile at their transparent attempt to escape the tension. "Nice try, darlings. Eat your vegetables."
"But Uncle Josh hasn't touched his food either," Sam pointed out innocently.
All eyes turned to Josh's untouched plate. He shifted uncomfortably under the scrutiny.
"Not hungry," he muttered.
"You haven't been hungry for days," Sara said quietly. "Not since..."
"Don't." His voice came sharp enough to make the children jump.
Helena set down her fork with deliberate calm. "Perhaps it's time we addressed what happened last week."
"Nothing happened," Josh insisted.
"Really?" Sara's control finally snapped. "Is that why you've been avoiding me? Why you won't even look at me? Because nothing happened?"
"Sara..." Max tried to intervene.
"No, I want to know." She turned fully toward Josh. "One minute we're having a real conversation, you're finally opening up, and the next you get some mysterious text and completely shut down. What was in that message, Josh? What scared you so badly?"
The children watched with wide eyes, heads swiveling between adults like they were at a tennis match.
"This isn't the time or place," Josh said through gritted teeth.
"Then when is? You won't answer my calls. You've rescheduled all our meetings. You practically run when you see me coming."
"Because it's better that way!"
His outburst echoed through the dining room. Mia's lower lip trembled.
"Why?" Sara pressed. "Because of something you did years ago? Because you think your past makes you unworthy?"
"You don't understand-"
"Then help me understand! Whatever it is, Josh, it can't be worse than this... this emptiness where you used to be."
The raw pain in her voice made everyone at the table flinch. Even the quadruplets had gone completely still, sensing the importance of the moment.
"Tell her," Helena said softly. "Before someone else does."
Josh's knuckles whitened around his napkin. "I can't."
"Can't or won't?" Sara challenged.
"Both!" He stood abruptly, his chair scraping against hardwood. "Some things can't be fixed with understanding. Some mistakes can't be forgiven."
"Like what Mommy and Daddy did?" Mia's small voice cut through the tension. "But we still love Aunty Sara."
Josh's face crumpled for just a moment before he got control again. "This is different."
"Why?" Sara stood too, facing him across the table. "Because you think I'm too pure to handle your darkness? News flash, Josh - I'm the daughter of murderers. Whatever you did, I can handle it."
"No." His voice broke on the word. "You can't."
"Try me."
Their eyes locked in silent battle. The rest of the family held their breath, even the children sensing the weight of the moment.
Then Josh's phone buzzed again. The sound made him jump like a gunshot.
Sara reached for it before he could, but he snatched it away. Not before she glimpsed the preview: "Time's running out, Matthews or should i call you your new name, Sinclair. Pay up or everyone learns what really happened that night."
"Who's blackmailing you?" she demanded.
"Stay out of it." He backed toward the door. "Please, Sara. For once in your life, just let something go."
"Like you're letting me go?"
The question froze him in his tracks. For a heartbeat, his careful mask cracked, showing such raw longing it took her breath away.
Then the walls slammed back into place. "I'm sorry," he said stiffly. "I have to go."
"Josh-" Helena started to rise.
"No." He cut her off. "No more pushing. No more... this." He gestured at the family gathering. "I don't belong here. I never did."
He strode out before anyone could stop him. Sara sank back into her chair, tears streaming silently down her face.
The quadruplets immediately abandoned their seats to cluster around her, offering hugs and patting her hair.
"Don't cry, Aunty Sara," Mia whispered. "Uncle Josh is just scared because he loves you too much."
"Out of the mouths of babes," Helena murmured.
William cleared his throat. "Perhaps it's time we looked into these messages he's receiving. If someone's threatening him..."
"Already on it," Max pulled out his phone. "I'll have our security team trace the number."
Eva wrapped an arm around Sara. "We'll figure this out. Whatever he's running from, whatever he's afraid of, he's family now. Whether he likes it or not."
Sara wiped her eyes, straightening with new determination. "You're right. And family doesn't let family face their demons alone."
"Even if they're being stupidly noble about it," Helena added dryly.
Outside, an engine roared as Josh's car peeled away from the mansion. But this time, Sara didn't feel hopeless watching him run.
This time, she had a plan.
Whatever secrets lurked in Josh's past, whatever shadows he thought would destroy them - she would face them head-on.
Because some things were worth fighting for.
Even if you had to fight the person you loved to save them from themselves.
