Chapter 185
After Bianca hung up, seeing Ewan's ugly expression beside her, she spoke carefully, "What do we do next?"
Ewan's anger churned inside. His hand on the sofa clenched tightly, his words carrying displaced anger. "You're asking me? Who do I ask? How did I give birth to such a brainless daughter? If I'd known, I wouldn't have given those shares back. Now we've really lost big."
The call had been on speaker, so Victor naturally heard it too. At this moment, he couldn't help feeling frustrated. "What was Kenna thinking, being so stubborn? I went to the police station this afternoon to ask—they won't allow family visits, no matter what I said."
Bianca was now out of ideas too. Unable to see Kenna, she had no way to verify whether what Eugenie said was true or false.
She slumped onto the sofa, her expression somewhat wooden. "What about my daughter then? Now everything depends on her."
Ewan paced the living room with his hands behind his back, finally giving up. "First, go inquire about the situation. Save her if we can. If we can't, there's nothing we can do—who told her not to seize the opportunity herself."
Bianca sat on the sofa, hesitating to speak several times, ultimately saying nothing.
On the other side, Eugenie ignored her ringing phone and pushed the door open a crack. "If the food arrives, eat first. I need to take a call."
As the balcony door opened, Nicholas also heard the phone ringing. Knowing she had matters to handle, he didn't disturb her further.
"Alright then, come over quickly." Seeing her nod, he proactively helped close the door.
The call automatically disconnected. Not long after, the other party called again. This time, she answered and put it to her ear. "Mrs. Grayson, good evening."
Rhea's voice was anxious, with no intention of pleasantries, directly getting to the point. "Eugenie, I heard from your family that you're fine and have gone home. What about my son? What did you do to him?"
As expected, she was calling about Bernard. Eugenie spoke unhurriedly. "Mrs. Grayson, that's quite interesting. Me, a woman who couldn't hurt a fly—what could I do to a grown man?"
Rhea gritted her teeth, convinced this matter was connected to her, forced to soften her tone. "Eugenie, since nothing happened that night, why keep holding onto this matter? He didn't do anything, did he?"
Eugenie finally understood why Bernard had been so unscrupulous before—with accomplices plotting and scheming, plus an indulgent mother behind him, no wonder he could do anything illegal.
Since Rhea proactively mentioned that night, Eugenie began settling old scores. "Mrs. Grayson, since we've both mentioned that night's events, it saves me from having to find you."
Hearing this, Rhea's tone grew more guarded. "What do you want to say?"
"I was injured that night. Later I'll send you the medical bill. Remember to transfer the money." Eugenie didn't care what the other party thought—as long as she could make them uncomfortable.
Hearing this nearly gave Rhea a heart attack. With her current wealth, she wasn't short of money, but for Eugenie to ask her for such a small amount—wasn't that too much?
She steadied her breathing, trying to speak gently. "Eugenie, I can give you the money. As for my son, could you show some mercy?"
Speaking of Bernard, he was probably still at the police station. Eugenie answered as if it had nothing to do with her. "Mrs. Grayson, I'm afraid you've got it wrong. Bernard isn't in my hands. You should say that to the police."
Feeling unsatisfied, she immediately added, "With the Grayson family's connections, this shouldn't be difficult. If you can't handle it, you could ask his grandfather for help. If you don't dare tell him, I can help—fees charged separately."
Mason didn't know about this matter. She figured they must have had reservations before acting. Now that the cat was out of the bag, if Mason got involved, who knows what would happen.
Rhea naturally understood this. Hearing Eugenie also planned to extort money opportunistically, she started cursing through the phone in anger.
Eugenie's ears were dirtied by the foul language from the other side. Giving no face at all, she directly hung up.
She pushed open the balcony door and walked in. A fragrant smell wafted inside. Walking to the dining table, she saw it covered with various delicious foods.
"Why did you order so much?" She reached out to take the utensils Nicholas handed her and sat down on the stool.
Nicholas sat across from her, using serving utensils to add food to her plate. "It's your first time visiting my home. If I'm too stingy, I'm afraid you won't want to come next time."
This made it sound like she was very temperamental. Under the table, Eugenie kicked his foot. "Don't talk nonsense, or I'll get angry."
This little force meant nothing to him. He ladled a bowl of soup and placed it before her. "Those people didn't do anything to you, did they?"
She shook her head. Those people couldn't affect her. "I'm fine. Let's eat properly and not letting them ruin our mood."
Seeing her eating and drinking well, Nicholas didn't worry, picking up serving utensils to add more food to her plate.
During these days waiting for Kenna's answer, Eugenie's life was very regular—work, home, rest, watching several movies with Nicholas.
As for Kenna's situation, with Nicholas working on it, she barely needed to worry. As long as they couldn't make contact, people in desperate situations would always reveal their true nature.
In the blink of an eye, it was the third day. During lunch she kept checking her phone. Nicholas quickly noticed her distraction. "Eat properly, don't think about other things. If you need anything, just tell me directly. I can handle everything for you."
Nicholas had that confidence. Eugenie didn't doubt it. She was just somewhat surprised—did Kenna really trust those family members that much?
She couldn't help but begin doubting whether she'd initially misjudged the situation. Given Kenna's personality, she shouldn't be this calm.
Nicholas across from her saw she was still distracted and simply reached out to confiscate her phone, placing it where she couldn't reach.
"Give it back first." Eugenie reached out to ask for it.
Nicholas wouldn't budge. "No. Eat first."
Under his firm attitude, Eugenie had to compromise and lower her head to eat.
In the afternoon, Nicholas went to a meeting. She had nothing to do in the office. Hearing the phone ring, her body reacted faster than her brain. Picking it up for a glance, it was an unfamiliar local number. After answering, a familiar voice came through.
"Eugenie, let's meet."
Kenna had proactively called, but her attitude was unclear. Either way, Eugenie still had to go take a look.
Eugenie hadn't driven these past few days. Nicholas had matters to handle. Without a car and wanting to go out, she could only find someone.
She called Yvaine. Learning she was nearby, she asked her to help drive her there. The other party agreed without hesitation. "Wait there. Send me the location—I'll be right there."
Eugenie left Nicholas a sticky note, gathered her things, and took the elevator downstairs. A few minutes later, a red sports car stopped before her.
"Get in."
