Chapter 19: Reunited
Andrew Pov
A few days had passed since Ava confronted Derek about Tristan, and the tension that had hung over us had transformed into a fragile optimism. The doctor had just confirmed that Derek was a match for Tristan’s bone marrow transplant, and while there was still a long road ahead, it felt like we were finally moving in the right direction.
I sat at the kitchen island, absently stirring my coffee as I glanced at Ava. She was scrolling through her phone, likely looking for updates or appointments for the transplant. The morning light streamed through the window, casting a warm glow around her, but I could see the lines of worry etched on her face.
“Any word from the hospital?” I asked, trying to keep my voice light.
Ava looked up, her eyes brightening. “Yes! They want to schedule the procedure for next week. I just need to confirm with Derek that he’s ready.”
“Great. And Tristan?” I leaned forward, eager to hear how our son was handling the news.
“He’s excited,” she replied, a smile breaking through her previous tension. “I told him Derek was coming over today, and he’s been talking about it non-stop.”
The thought of Tristan meeting his biological father for the first time sent a wave of conflicting emotions through me. I had always played the role of the father, but now Derek would step into the picture, and I wasn’t sure how to feel about it. Part of me felt possessive of Tristan, wanting to shield him from the potential pain that could arise from a reunion with someone who had betrayed him and his mom. But another part understood the importance of family and the connection they might forge.
“I’ll make sure to be around when Derek gets here,” I said, determined to support both Ava and Tristan.
“Thank you,” Ava replied, her voice softening. “I really appreciate it. It means a lot to me, to us.”
As the morning unfolded, I busied myself with tasks around the house, trying to keep my mind off the impending meeting. I wanted to ensure that everything was perfect for Tristan, that he felt safe and loved no matter what happened today.
When the doorbell rang, my heart raced. “That must be him,” I said, glancing at Ava, who was anxiously smoothing her hair and adjusting her clothes.
“Okay, here we go,” she murmured, taking a deep breath. We exchanged a look that said a thousand words; uncertainty, hope, and determination.
I opened the door to reveal Derek, looking a bit nervous but ready for the occasion. “Hey, Andrew,” he greeted, his voice steady. “Thanks for having me.”
“Of course,” I replied, stepping aside to let him in. “Come on in.”
As Derek stepped inside, I couldn’t help but notice how much he seemed to have changed. He was still the confident man I remembered, but there was a hint of humility in his demeanor, perhaps from the weight of the past few days.
“Tristan is in his room,” Ava said, leading Derek toward the living area. “He’s really looking forward to meeting you.”
“Yeah, I’ve been thinking about it a lot,” Derek replied, rubbing the back of his neck. “I just hope he’s okay with everything.”
“He will be,” Ava reassured him, her tone warm. “Tristan has a big heart. He loves everyone around him.”
As we approached Tristan’s room, I could hear the soft sounds of him playing. I felt a surge of protectiveness wash over me. Would he be okay with Derek? Would they connect in the way that I hoped?
“Are you ready?” I asked Derek, my voice low.
“Yeah, I think so, and I appreciate the fact that you both agreed to me seeing him before the procedure,” he said, glancing at me with an earnest expression. “I just want to make things right.”
We stepped into the room, and the sight of Tristan, sitting cross-legged on the floor surrounded by toys, brought a smile to my face. “Hey, buddy! Look who’s here!” I called out.
Tristan turned around, his eyes widening in surprise. “Derek!” he exclaimed, jumping to his feet. “You’re here!”
Derek’s face softened at the sight of his son. “Hey, Tristan,” he said, kneeling down to the boy’s level. “I’m so glad to finally meet you.”
Tristan rushed over, throwing his arms around Derek in a spontaneous hug. I watched, my heart swelling with a mix of pride and relief. Derek seemed taken aback, momentarily frozen before wrapping his arms around Tristan and returning the embrace.
“Wow, you’re a strong hugger!” Derek laughed, ruffling Tristan’s hair.
“I’m almost eight!” Tristan beamed, stepping back to look at him. “You’re really my dad?”
Derek nodded, his expression earnest. “Yes, I am. And I’m really proud of you, kiddo. Your mom has told me so much about you.”
“Like what?” Tristan asked, his curiosity piqued.
“Like how brave you are, and how much you love racing games,” Derek replied, sharing a conspiratorial grin with Ava.
Tristan giggled. “I’m the best at them!”
“Is that so?” Derek raised an eyebrow, pretending to be skeptical. “Well, I might have to challenge you to a race someday.”
“Anytime! I’ll beat you!” Tristan exclaimed, his enthusiasm infectious.
“Alright, but only if you promise to let me win a few times,” Derek teased, and I could see the ice between them starting to melt.
As they continued to chat, I felt a sense of relief wash over me. It was as if a weight had been lifted. I watched the two of them interact, I’m not sure what I felt.
Ava joined me at the doorway, her expression soft as she took in the scene. “I think this is going better than I expected,” she whispered.
“Yeah, I agree,” I replied, glancing down at her and placing a kiss on her forehead. “Tristan really seems to like him.”
“Let’s just hope it lasts,” she said, her voice tinged with a mixture of hope and apprehension.
After a while, we moved to the living room, where we settled on the couch. Derek and Tristan played a few rounds of video games, the atmosphere lively and filled with laughter. I felt a sense of belonging wash over me, watching the two bond over their shared interests.
Eventually, we shifted the conversation to the upcoming procedure. “So, Derek,” I started, “are you ready for the next steps?”
Derek nodded, his demeanor shifting to serious. “Yeah, I want to make sure everything is in place for Tristan. I know he’s counting on me.”
“We have an appointment scheduled with the doctor later this week,” I informed him. “They’ll explain the process in detail and answer any questions you might have.”
“Good, I’ll be there,” Derek replied firmly. “I want to make sure I’m doing everything right for him.”
Tristan looked up, his eyes bright with curiosity. “What kind of procedures are they going to do?”
“They’re going to take some of my bone marrow and give it to you,” Derek explained, trying to simplify it for Tristan. “It’ll help you feel better.”
Tristan furrowed his brow, absorbing the information. “Does it hurt?” he asked, his voice small.
“A little bit, but only for a second,” Derek assured him. “Then you’ll start feeling better, and we can play more games together!”
“Okay!” Tristan nodded, clearly reassured by Derek’s words.
Derek was fitting in surprisingly well, but I didn’t want Tristan to get attached to Derek, even if it was just in small moments.
