Merciful Lies
The morning sun filtered through the curtains in Laura's room, gently waking her from her sleep. But even before she opened her eyes, she could feel the weight of guilt and confusion settling on her chest.
The events of the previous night replayed in her mind. The dinner with Lucas, the kiss, the way her body had responded to his touch... and the way her heart had rebelled against it.
"Mommy," the voice of Luke pulled her from her thoughts. The two-year-old stood in his crib, stretching his little arms toward her.
"Good morning, my love," Laura got up, lifting her son into her arms and showering his face with kisses. "Ready for a new day?"
"Yes, mommy," Luke chirped, his speech still developing. "Hungry."
Laura smiled, love for her son flooding her heart. He was her light, her reason to keep going, even in the darkest moments.
But even as she fed Luke, her mind returned to Lucas. She had to confront what had happened between them. She had to be honest, before things went too far.
Later that day, after leaving Luke with Mrs. Martinez, Laura met Lucas on the beach. He was waiting with a smile, but his smile faltered when he noticed the seriousness on her face.
"Lucas, we need to talk," Laura began, gathering her courage. "About last night, about us..."
Lucas took her hand, his expression understanding. "Laura, I get it. I know you're still dealing with a lot. I don't want to pressure you."
Laura felt tears prickling in her eyes. Lucas's understanding only made this harder. "It's just not fair to you, Lucas. Not when my heart is still... divided."
Lucas drew her into him, embracing her against his chest. "Laura, I'm willing to wait. To go at your pace. Because I believe in what we have, in what we could have."
Laura allowed herself to get lost in his embrace, wishing she could believe in his words. Wishing it were that simple.
Meanwhile, at the Petrov mansion, Dimitri was immersed in a frenzy of activity. He had spent the last hours reviewing every document, every report, looking for any evidence that could link Lucas to illegal activities.
Because now he was sure. Lucas had been behind everything. His death, and Laura's guilt... it had all been part of their plan to take control of the Lombardo Group.
A knock on the door pulled him from his thoughts. It was Yulia, looking as impeccable and haughty as ever.
"Dimitri, what is going on? You've been locked in here all day."
Dimitri suppressed a sigh of irritation. He had no time for Yulia's complaints, not when every minute counted.
"I'm working, Yulia. Something you wouldn't understand."
Yulia's eyes narrowed, anger glowing in their depths. "I'm your wife, Dimitri. I deserve to know what's got you so obsessed."
"My wife?" Dimitri laughed bitterly. "You're nothing but a spoiled child who married me for my money. I don't have time for your dramas, Yulia. Now, if you'll excuse me..."
Yulia stood there for a moment, trembling with rage and humiliation. Then, with an indignant huff, she turned and stormed out of the room, slamming the door behind her.
Dimitri barely registered her departure, his mind already back on his research. He had to find something, anything, that he could use against Lucas.
Because it wasn't just his revenge at stake. If Lucas really was behind all this, he would stop at nothing to get what he wanted.
Hours later, exhausted but satisfied, Dimitri leaned back in his chair. He had found what he needed. Evidence of Lucas's dealings with criminal groups, money laundering, and fraud.
It was enough to sink him, to send him to prison for a very long time. And he had to do it without revealing his true identity.
Because that was a secret Dimitri was not yet ready to reveal. Not even to those closest to him.
With a sigh, Dimitri reached for the phone. It was time to make a visit to his parents... no, to Luke's parents.
Guilt gnawed at him every time he saw them, every time he lied to them about his relationship with their late son. But it was necessary. Until all this was over, until Lucas was behind bars and Laura was safe, he had to maintain his facade.
Even if that meant lying to the people he loved most in the world. Even if that meant denying who he really was.
Because in the end, it was all for a greater good. It was all to ensure that the truth, finally, came to light.
The sun was setting on the horizon when Dimitri arrived at Luke's parents' house. It was a modest but cozy home, filled with memories of a life that no longer belonged to him.
Emma, Luke's mother, greeted him with a warm hug. "Dimitri, so good to see you. Come in, come in, I was just making dinner."
Dimitri followed her inside, his heart heavy with guilt and longing. Every time he came here, every time he saw the faces of these people who had been like second parents to him, he felt like he was betraying their trust.
But he had no choice. Not until he could prove Laura's innocence and unmask Lucas as the true culprit.
James, Luke's father, greeted him with a firm handshake. "Good to have you here, boy. How's everything at the company?"
Dimitri forced a smile. "Good, good. You know how it is, there's always something to do. But I'm glad to be able to take a break to visit you."
They sat down at the table, enjoying Emma's homemade food and catching up on the news. But beneath the surface, Dimitri could feel the sadness that permeated every word, every gesture.
The loss of Luke still weighed heavily in this house. His absence was like a phantom limb, always present, always painful.
And Dimitri knew he was partly responsible for that pain. Because he was Luke, but he couldn't tell them. He couldn't give them the comfort they so desperately needed.
At least, not yet.
After dinner, as Emma served coffee, James turned to Dimitri with a serious expression. "Dimitri, there's something we want to ask you."
Dimitri tensed but maintained his neutral expression. "Of course, anything."
James exchanged a glance with Emma before continuing. "It's about Laura."
Dimitri's heart skipped a beat at the mention of her name. "What about her?"
"Well, as you know, after everything that happened, the accusations against her... we lost touch with her. We thought maybe you'd know something, given how close you were to Luke..."
Dimitri swallowed hard, his mind racing. What could he tell them? How much could he reveal without endangering Laura or himself?
"The truth is, I haven't heard much about her," he finally said, hating the lie even as he spoke it. "After Luke's death, she... disappeared. I think she needed time to heal, to be alone."
Emma nodded, her eyes bright with unshed tears. "We understand. It's just that... we want her to pay for what she did to our son, it's not fair that she's free after what she did."
Dimitri felt a lump in his throat. He knew her mother was entirely justified in feeling that way.
"If I ever hear anything about her, anything at all," said Dimitri, his voice hoarse with emotion, "you'll be the first to know. I promise."
James patted him on the shoulder, his grip firm and reassuring. "You're a good man, Dimitri. Luke was lucky to have you as a friend."
The weight of those words, of that undeserved trust, was almost more than Dimitri could bear. But he forced himself to smile, to nod, to continue with this charade a little longer.
Later, back in his office, Dimitri poured himself a glass of whiskey with trembling hands. The visit to his parents had affected him more than he wanted to admit.
Seeing their pain, their longing for answers, for closure... and knowing that he had the power to give it to them, but couldn't... was torture.
But there was no other way. Not until he had all the pieces in place, not until he could ensure that Lucas would pay for his crimes.
A soft knock at the door pulled him from his thoughts. "Come in," he called, expecting to see Yulia or perhaps one of the servants.
But to his surprise, it was Sarah who entered, looking pale and shaky.
"Sarah, what are you doing here? What's wrong?"
Sarah collapsed into a chair, her hands nervously twisting the hem of her blouse. "Dimitri, I... there's something I have to tell you. Something about Laura."
