Chapter 169: Shadows of Thornhaven: Part One
POV: Lucian
Warmth was the first thing.
Not the warmth of a fire or a body but the ambient warmth of stone that had been enclosed for long enough to develop its own temperature independent of the surface above it, the specific quality of deep underground space that was neither cold nor warm in the way of weather but simply steady at a different register from both.
He organized returning consciousness by what was physically present without attempting narrative.
Stone beneath him. Low ceiling with the specific texture of cut rather than natural stone, carved in old symbology that had the quality of something older than the fortress above. Faint luminescence from moss or lichen or possibly the stone itself, which had the specific property that the Moonstone had also demonstrated, the old Lycan materials that had been chosen for their ambient light quality in spaces intended for extended occupation.
Mate bond present and warm. The warmth of it different from the warmth of the stone. The warmth of something living rather than something ambient.
He sat up.
The motion worked in a way it should not have worked after seventy-two hours of blood-magic chain burning and the specific physical costs of the power surge and whatever falling stone had done during the collapse. The body he had woken up in moved with the specific ease of something that had been repaired rather than something that was working around damage.
He looked at his hands.
The wounds that had been on them when the chains were removed were not there. Not in the way of wounds that had healed leaving evidence. In the way of wounds that had healed leaving only the smooth skin of something that had been addressed completely rather than partially.
"You are awake," Lior said.
The voice came from his right, from the deeper part of the catacomb space where a passage entrance was visible as a darker area against the wall. Lior moved into the available light with the quality of someone who had been maintaining watch and had been doing so for long enough that the maintaining had become the settled background of the hours rather than the active foreground.
The vampire looked better than he should have.
Not perfect. The evidence of having been under falling stone was legible in the specific pattern of almost-healed damage that remained. But someone who had taken the direct impact of a collapsing section of Thornhaven's prison level should not have been walking under their own power within the same day. Should not have been looking at Lucian with both gold eyes functioning and the body organized around upright posture rather than around the nearest surface that could bear weight.
"How long," Lucian said.
"Six hours," Lior said. "Your mother withdrew to Drevalon with the army. The fortress is managing the damage and the casualties. The search for us will expand when they have addressed the immediate structural concerns."
"Six hours," Lucian said. He processed what six hours of healing had done to his body and what his body had done with six hours of healing. "I heal faster than I did before."
"Yes," Lior said.
"This is from the mate bond," Lucian said. Not a question. The mate bond was the thing that had changed and the healing was the thing that had changed and the connection between those two things was legible without requiring confirmation.
"I have been watching it for the past three hours," Lior said. "Torn muscle closed in under an hour. The pattern is not Lycan regeneration specifically. It has Lycan regeneration in it but the speed is beyond what Lycan regeneration alone produces."
"Vampire healing factor," Lucian said.
"Your body is integrating both," Lior said. "The mate bond apparently works at a level that includes biological mechanism as well as connection."
