Chapter 145: Reconciliation
ELARA’S POV
I stiffened as I heard his voice. What was he doing here? So that’s why Alicent had been smiling all along. But how didn’t I notice him, I would have felt him through the bond –oh that’s why he made it impossible for me to feel him through the bond, because I would have known he was coming here.
I turned to face him slowly. He stood there smiling as if everything was well with us. I plastered a mask of indifference on my face.
“Beros” I said through gritted teeth.
“Elara?” He said too, his voice low and confident.
“What are you doing here?”
“You left without me”. Huh. Was he crazy? He was the one that literally didn’t want to talk to me.
“Huh?” I cocked my head to the side, desperately wishing he wouldn’t say what would piss me off right now. Alicent had riled me up enough and I would not hesitate to transfer all that aggression to Beros.
“I said, you..left…without…me” he said again, emphasizing the words.
“You must be confused” I frowned, tucking my arms in again. “Very confused”.
“I’m not confused”, he tucked his own arms into. Was he copying me? “You left and didn’t tell me where you were going, if not for Alicent…”
“Ohh, so it was her…” I turned to face her but she was nowhere to be found. That little snitch. I would get her.
I tuned back to face him, “so what brings you here?” He had definitely heard everything I was telling Alicent about him, and Alicent made me keep on talking. Oh, I was definitely gonna get her now.
“I came to see you” nope. This was getting too confusing. I didn’t want to stay for it any longer, besides, the anger was simmering underneath my skin. So I turned to leave without another word, but he grabbed my hand, effectively stopping me from leaving.
My hands trailed to the point where our skin met, I could feel the sparks flowing, the bond was open again. Then I lifted my eyes from where our skin met to look at his eyes, there was remorse in it.
“Beros, let me be. You shouldn’t have come here”
He didn’t let go on my hand. The wolves around us had begun to stare at us now, while pretending to focus on their jobs, but I could see their ears perking up to listen to our conversation.
“I missed you Elara, I miss you “
“Last I checked, you didn’t want to talk to me, you left me alone in the woods and almost burnt me”
“Now you’re just exaggerating, you know I wouldn’t let the fire hurt you” he was right, but I was too pissed now to listen to any of that.
“It doesn’t matter” I wiggled my hand out of his “you let the fire get too close to me and then you left me alone” I turned and walked away, heading to the tent that had been prepared for me.
I had barely walked into the tent to get away from him when I heard the tent flaps opening and closing again, before feeling his presence right behind me.
I didn’t turn to look at him.” I’m sorry…” I heard him say, before his hands wrapped around my waist and pulled me backwards into him, his nose sniffing my hair.
I wanted to melt into his embrace but he had to learn a lesson. I coldly go all the way to the point of almost touching fire, even though it couldn’t hurt me, I don’t care.
I couldn’t go all the way to the point of touching fire for him and then forgive him after leaving me alone in the woods. Nope. He would get what what’s coming for him too.
“Leave me alone Beros” his hands only tightened around my waist.
“Nope, I’m not going to” he pulled me in closer.
“Yes you are” and then, I used some of my papers to free myself and push him away from me. He barely shifted, only to come after me again, pulling me into his embrace.
“I was so pissed Elara, I know I overreacted, I just couldn’t help it”
My heart was trying to soften but I wouldn’t let it. “It doesn’t matter, I tried to explain to you but you didn’t want to listen”
“I know, I’m ready to listen now”
“It’s too late” and somehow, those words sounded deeper than I had expected them too. I felt him stiffen behind me, before slowly turning me around to face him.
“Do you – do you mean it Elara?” He asked. I didn’t want to look into his eyes, but I did, and when I saw the guilt swirling in his eyes, I knew I couldn’t be angry at him any longer.
“No, I didn’t meant it, I’m sorry too” I whispered.
I almost felt the relieve as much as he did, I felt the bond flow brightly between us before settling into a calm state.
“I’m sorry I got so angry at you. I don’t – I can’t handle the thought of you being gone from me Elara. I can’t handle it, not again” he pulled me into a hug this time, his nose nestled into my neck.
I returned the hug as well as I traced circled around his back. “It’s not happening again Beros, we will win this…” I pulled away from the huge to look into his eyes “…together. We will win this together”
And I said the words, I saw the wide smile on his face before his lips crashed against mine. We kissed for what felt like an eternity before he finally pulled away.
We were still breathing heavily when he said “I trust you now, trust me too. Trust all of us and we’ll get through this, but the last thing I want you to do is put yourself at the front of it all. You’re not alone. Let us stand by you”
And he was right. I wasn’t alone, I had friends, finally, people willing to stand by me and not leave me to fight alone. It was my duty now to honour the promise and let them help me.
“Yes Beros, we’ll stand together” he pulled me into a warm hug and we stood there for what felt like hours.
