Chapter 63: Rejected by My Best Friend & Alpha

KILLIAN'S POV

"Still no change?"

I took a bite of my roll, staring at Chris over my plate of food, and rolled my eyes. I swallowed and then answered. "Don't you think I would have come and got you if there had been?"

He rolled his eyes back at me. "No. You'd want to keep her to yourself. It's been two days. And she's still unconscious. Has Divinity been in there to see if she can do anything?"

"She's been in there every day. She said she needs to rest. She lost a lot of blood. She's healing. Caleb did a number on her."

"Caleb is an asshole, but I never thought he was this cruel. I don't see him doing this to her."

I shrugged. "Maybe you don't know him as well as you think."

He shook his head. "Something isn't adding up. He was in love with her. Then to almost murder her? No. When she wakes up, she can tell us more."

"Hopefully. If she remembers anything, she went through a pretty traumatic event."

Chris chewed his lip. "Either way, I'm going to figure it out and make whoever did this to her pay."

"You do that, not-mate."

"Shut up."

Marcus stepped around Chris, interrupting our conversation. "When you two lovebirds stop squabbling, I thought you might want to know that Divity just came and told me Vivian is awake."

Chris and I took one look at each other before I stood, and we were both running at full speed towards her room. I was there a mere three seconds before him, but I threw my arm across the door, barring him from entry. "Maybe both of us shouldn't go in at the same time. We don't want to overwhelm her."

"You're right. You should stay out here."

I scoffed. “Yeah, right. I'm the Alpha of this pack, and it's my healer that is helping her, and I'll be damned if you're the first to see her."

"And I'm her best friend, and I've known her since she was five."

I glared at him, jealous. "Not happening. I'm going in there, and you're sitting your sappy ass outside. Got it?"

"She's going to be pissed at you when my face isn't one of the first ones she sees."

"Doubtful."

He smirked. "It's going to bruise that ego when she asks about me."

I narrowed my eyes. "She won't."

Winking, he walked over to the wall across from the door and slid down to the floor. "Go ahead. I'll wait out here. It's worth it to see how pissed off you get when I'm right. I'll wait my turn."

I turned the nob, spinning around, a knot in my gut at the thought that he might be right. Entering the room, I saw Vivian sitting up in bed, Divinity by her side and holding her hand. Vivian offered me a weak smile. "Kill. I'm so happy to see you."

I walked over to the bed and looked down at her. She was still so pale; the dark rings around her eyes didn't make her any less beautiful. I tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "I thought I was going to lose you."

She laughed. "You can't get rid of me that easily."

I looked over at Divinity, sending a silent message that I'd like to be alone with her. She nodded. "I'll leave you two be. Call for me if you need me, Vivian."

Vivian looked at her apprerciatively. "Thank you so much, D. I'll see you later if that's okay."

Divinity patted her hand. "We'll talk more about that thing later."

Vivian winked at her as Divinity turned, making her way out of the room. I looked at Vivian, who had a smile on her face. "That thing?"

"Just girl talk. Divinity is really awesome. I think I actuallky made a friend."

"A friend?"

"I've never had one of those. A female friend, that is. My whole life, I've only ever been...Zeke's friend. That was my whole identity. I was following him around like...a pup. Doing any and everything, he wanted me to. I was never my own person."

I sat down in the chair that Divinity had left. "And now?"

"I feel like I'm becoming my own person now. And I can finally start letting people in."

I gripped her hand. "That's good to hear. Because the person you are is pretty amazing."

She made a small o-shape with her mouth. "I mean, I'm okay."

"Well, I disagree. You're amazing. And we could go on and on with this argument. But I do need to ask you something. I know you just woke up. And your brain might need some time. But do you remember what happened to you?"

She scrunched up her face. "Kind of, but not really."

"What do you remember?"

"I remember talking to Caleb. And I confronted him. I was trying to figure out if he was under a spell. It's why I left with him. I know, we've been here before. Stupid of me. Always the martyr. Turns out he wasn't. He was just that...he's a psychopath. And we fought."

"And he did that to you?"

"Well, no. I hurt him. I threw him. With my magic. And then I ran."

I arched an eyebrow. "And then what happened?"

"I was running. And then I heard laughter. I was surrounded by laughter. Female. I didn't recognize it. Then there was pain. A lot of pain. Then everything goes black. I don't remember anything from there."

"Do you think it was Sarah?"

She rubbed the back of her neck. "But how would she know we were returning to Greywood, and how would she have found us out in the woods?"

"I don't know. She's sneaky like that."

Vivian fisted the blanket. "Something isn't adding up. Sarah would have just killed me right then and there. She wouldn't have let me escape. And I don't see how she would have found me. So no. It's something or someone else."

I shrugged. "I guess we'll never know unless we go back out there."

She glared at me. "No one needs to go back out there. We need to focus on the war and not revenge over what happened to me. We have too much going on as it is."

"If you say so. It could be connected."

"You're not going to drop it, are you?"

"No."

"Fine. One day. We'll spend one day on it."

I grinned. "I appreciate your generosity in my revenge."

"You're impossible. Now, speaking of the impossible, where is Chris? I would have thought he'd be with you."

My smile faded. "He's outside."

"Bring him in here."

"I wanted to spend time with you."

"Kill, come on. I want to see you both."

I stood. "I have things I need to do. I'll send him in."

I wouldn't watch the two get goo-goo eyed over each other. I'd have to land a punch in Chris's face. She looked at me sadly. "You don't have to act like this."

"Act like what?"

"Like a child who just lost their favorite toy."

"You're not a toy."

"I know that. And that's why you shouldn't be acting like this."

"I shouldn't have to share you. And I shouldn't have to act like I'm okay with this. If you knew half of what I've done for you..."

She tilted her head. "What have you done for me?"

"Just forget it."

"No, tell me."

I waved a hand. "It doesn't matter. I'll go get your not-mate."

I turned on my heel and stormed towards the door. I heard her call out. "One day, I hope you can see the light in the dark."

I paused, then looked back at her. "You are the light in my dark."

Without another word, I threw open the door to see a grinning Chris. "I take it by that pissed-off look on your face that I was right."

"Shut the fuck up. Just go in already. I have shit to do."

I didn't bother another glance at him, continuing down the hall. I needed to see Marcus to figure out how to make Chris's first training day hell. And also set up arrangements to go back into the woods to figure out how Sarah attacked Vivian. Priorities.
