Chapter 274: Flawless
Christopher lifted his eyelids and glanced at the officer with a cold sneer. "Instructed? Nobody instructed me. I did it myself. I wanted to kill that bitch Sophia. She destroyed my family, destroyed everything I had."
The interrogating officer's face darkened completely. Suppressing his anger, he warned, "Let me remind you, you'd better cooperate with this interrogation honestly. You just got out on bail and then committed attempted murder. We can revoke your bail immediately and give you a harsher sentence."
"Harsher sentence?" Christopher sneered again, his face full of indifference. "Death penalty or prison, I'll take either. I've lived long enough anyway. My family's already destroyed. What's the point of living? Judge me however you want, I don't care."
He had nothing left now.
The company was gone, his younger daughter was dead, his older daughter was about to face trial, his wife was locked up—everything he'd worked for his whole life had turned to dust.
He was alive, but no different from a walking corpse. He had nothing left to fear.
The officer looked at his completely uncooperative attitude, so angry his teeth were grinding, but there was nothing he could do.
After a few seconds, another officer nearby spoke up, his tone low and cold. "Christopher, you really won't say anything? Don't you want to see Emily at all? She's in the detention center too. Don't you two want to see each other one last time, father and daughter?"
Christopher's body suddenly stiffened, the madness on his face fading somewhat.
Emily was his only daughter still alive.
He quickly pulled out another cold sneer, slowly shaking his head, his eyes completely lifeless. "Looks like you guys are really desperate, using something like this to make a deal with me."
"What's the point of seeing her anyway?" He raised his head, meeting the officer's gaze, his lips curling into a twisted smile. "Either way, my whole family's done for. My wife, my two daughters, and me—we're all going to die because of this. At least we'll still be together, even if it's six feet under."
"Stop wasting your time. You won't get anything out of me. Do whatever you want with me."
The lights in the interrogation room were blindingly white, making the madness on Christopher's face even sharper.
Byron slammed the transcript notebook on the table.
"Christopher, I'm asking you one last time—who instructed you to attack at the charity gala?" Byron's voice was filled with barely contained anger. "You think if you keep your mouth shut, we can't find out?"
"Go ahead and investigate then." Christopher leaned back in his chair, his tone full of mockery. "I've told you I don't know how many times—nobody instructed me. I wanted to kill that bitch Sophia myself."
"She destroyed my family. Even if we die together, she's getting off easy."
The young officer beside him couldn't hold back anymore and slammed the table. "Stop talking nonsense! Christopher, you just got out of the detention center. Without anyone helping you, how could you possibly get into a charity gala with that kind of security?"
He continued pressing, his teeth clenched. "How did you get the cyanide? You think we're idiots?"
Christopher scoffed and simply closed his eyes, refusing to speak anymore.
Byron watched him completely shut down, his temples throbbing.
He'd been in criminal investigation for over twenty years and had seen plenty of vicious criminals, but rarely encountered someone like Christopher who, even with evidence right in front of him, would rather take all the blame than reveal who was behind it.
He knew very well that someone must be backing Christopher.
A desperate man with nothing left to lose and nothing to fear couldn't have planned such a meticulous operation on his own, nor could he have obtained that kind of substance by himself.
But Christopher was determined to die now and didn't care about a few more years in prison. No matter how they questioned him, they couldn't get him to talk.
"Sir, what do we do?" the young officer asked Byron in a low voice. "The detention period is almost up. We can't keep him here forever, right?"
Byron took a deep breath, rubbed his tense temples, and said in a heavy voice, "Take him down first. Put him in maximum security, assign extra personnel to watch him around the clock, and don't allow any visitors. I don't believe he can hold out forever."
Two officers stepped forward, pulled Christopher up from his chair, and dragged him out.
Byron wearily leaned back in his chair, picked up his water glass and took a sip. Just as he was about to catch his breath, the office door suddenly burst open. Ewan from the tech department rushed in with a document.
"Sir, we found it!" Ewan put the document on the desk, his tone urgent. "Christopher's bail was processed three days ago. The person who bailed him out was Sullivan's lawyer—that Brown Group affiliate who reported Theodora for murdering Emilio."
"Sullivan?" Byron's head snapped up, his eyes suddenly sharp. "How could it be him?"
He had a strong impression of that name, and seeing this result now, something felt off.
Sullivan was actually Christopher's bail guarantor. This kind of connection was hard to dismiss as coincidence.
"That's right, it's him." Ewan nodded, pointing to the signature and seal on the document. "All the procedures were handled by his lawyer. Five hundred thousand dollars was transferred from his personal account—that was Christopher's bail money."
Byron picked up the document and quickly read through it from beginning to end, his frown deepening.
Sullivan and Christopher—one was an affiliate of the Brown Group, the other was the former chairman of the Johnson Group. By all accounts, the two should have little connection.
Why would Sullivan spend five hundred thousand to bail out Christopher?
There was definitely something wrong here.
"Call Sullivan immediately and tell him to come to the police station. Say we need his cooperation in investigating something related to Christopher." Byron made the decision on the spot, giving Ewan a direct order.
"Yes, Sir!" Ewan responded and quickly left the office.
At the same time, in the CEO's office on the top floor of the Brown Group building.
Sullivan sat behind his desk, looking at the financial statements in his hand, his face dark.
Whenever he thought of Sophia's face, a vicious look rose in his eyes.
It was all that bitch's fault.
If she hadn't suddenly appeared, the Brown Group would already be in his hands by now.
That useless Mabel couldn't even handle this simple task and ended up getting herself caught.
Christopher was even more stupid—with such a golden opportunity, he couldn't even kill Sophia and ended up sending himself to the police station.
Just then, the phone on his desk rang.
Sullivan impatiently picked up the phone, his tone cold. "Hello?"
"Hello, is this Mr. Brown? I'm an officer from the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Municipal Police Department. We have a case that requires your cooperation in the investigation. Could you please come to the station now?" A young man's voice came through the phone.
Sullivan's heart suddenly tightened, and his grip on the phone unconsciously tightened.
The police were looking for him? His first reaction was whether Christopher had talked.
He immediately dismissed that thought.
Christopher, that nearly insane guy, was determined to die now and probably wouldn't drag him into it.
Besides, he believed all his arrangements were clean, with no direct evidence left behind. Even if the police suspected him, it would be hard for them to actually pin anything on him.
