Chapter 107 Midnight Rescue

Chapter 107 Midnight Rescue

"What about me? Did you ever think about what would happen to me if something happened to you?" Ethan's voice suddenly deepened.

Kate was caught off guard by his question. She looked up and saw not anger in his eyes, but unmistakable fear—raw and unfiltered.

She suddenly recalled how quickly Ethan had rushed into the room earlier, how forcefully he had pulled her and Blake apart.

He was so desperate, but at that moment, she truly hadn't thought about anything else.

"I..." Kate opened her mouth, her throat tight. "I was just so furious I couldn't think straight. After what he said, I couldn't let him hurt anyone else."

She lowered her eyes, her voice growing quieter. This was the truth, but it was also an excuse. She wanted to comfort him but didn't know what to say.

Kate fidgeted with her hands like a kitten who'd misbehaved. Ethan's heart softened, though his tone remained cool.

"Kate, you are my very existence. Blake deserves to die, but you can't trade your life for his. Do you hear me?"

He frowned, staring at her intently. Kate knew he was genuinely upset. She wrapped her arms around his waist and buried her face against his chest, her voice slightly muffled with emotion.

"I'm sorry. I won't do it again."

Her apology came out soft.

"There won't be a next time," Ethan said firmly.

He cupped her face, his expression dead serious. Kate immediately nodded, but just then, they heard a sound from outside the door.

"Kate?"

It was Veronica. Kate glanced at Ethan, who seemed slightly resigned.

He had planned to teach her a proper lesson—she needed to understand the consequences of her actions—but not right now.

Kate was deliberately trying to shift his focus, and he didn't call her out on it.

"Veronica's here because I called her," he said.

As he spoke, he opened the door. Veronica, Lucian, and Helena were all standing in the hallway. The hotel staff and curious onlookers had already dispersed.

Ethan stood to the side, expressionless, while Kate's face was still a bit pale. The three visitors paused, momentarily confused.

"Are you all right? About what happened earlier, Veronica, please don't misunderstand," Kate quickly said.

Veronica immediately waved her hands, eager to clear the air before Kate got the wrong idea.

"Kate, I don't misunderstand at all. When I arrived, Ethan explained everything. As for the gossip, it shouldn't be too bad tomorrow."

She had already told everyone that she was the one who asked Lucian to bring medicine to Helena.

And she had even publicly demonstrated how whipped Lucian was as her boyfriend. While people might still have their doubts, with the official girlfriend making such statements, the gossip would at least be more subdued.

Lucian thought to himself, 'Don't I deserve some dignity? I felt really embarrassed by all the drama that just happened. When she was showing how "whipped" I am, I almost instinctively dropped to my knees.'

"That's good," Kate said with relief, but she was still concerned about Helena.

Blake had originally planned to kill two birds with one stone, but he hadn't anticipated Veronica's absolute trust in Lucian.

The onlookers might not necessarily gossip about Lucian, but they would certainly talk about Helena.

The label of "the other woman," once attached to anyone, would bring relentless attacks, regardless of any explanations offered.

In this situation, while the gossip might not be extensive, it could be persistent, which would significantly impact Helena.

Helena seemed to sense Kate's thoughts.

"I'll be fine. As long as it doesn't affect Ms. Ruth and Mr. Bridges," she said nonchalantly.

"No, that won't do," Kate frowned. This wasn't something that could be dismissed simply because Helena said she was fine.

The next round of the competition was tomorrow, and with Helena's father keeping a close eye on Gloria, this gossip would not only affect the competition but could also make her father unhappy. If he decided to increase security around Gloria and prevent Helena from visiting, their situation would become much more difficult.

They needed to make a plan in advance.

After thinking for a moment, Kate had an idea.

"Ethan," she blinked at him, and Ethan sighed inwardly.

She knew he was still upset, yet she was already asking him for a favor.

"Whatever you need me to do, just say it," he replied.

Kate smiled slightly and said, "Could you ask Milan to control the gossip ahead of time? Try to keep it from spreading. And then have someone come with me to the hospital—I want to get Gloria out tonight."Everyone looked surprised.

Helena spoke up first. "At this hour? Everyone at the hospital will be resting. If we make any noise, we'll attract attention."

"But this is also when the security guards will be at their most complacent. I'll only take two people up with me, and the rest can wait on the floor below," Kate explained.

That way, if anything happened, they could easily provide backup, and the smaller group would make less noise.

Helena bit her lip, still hesitant.

"But I'm worried about my grandmother's condition. Moving her in the middle of the night might be risky for her health."

"Don't worry, I'll have Milan bring professional medical staff with us," Ethan interjected, already taking out his phone to call Milan.

After finishing the call, he looked up at Lucian.

"You and Veronica should stay at the hotel. Keep an eye on Blake."

Blake was just humiliated, so he might be out for revenge.

Lucian nodded immediately. "Don't worry, we'll watch him closely."

With that settled, Ethan led Kate downstairs with Helena following behind. Ethan appeared calm, but once they got into the car, he spoke firmly.

"You're not going upstairs."

Helena was in her own car.

Kate had just fastened her seatbelt when she heard Ethan's cold tone. She froze for a moment.

"But I promised Helena I'd help rescue her grandmother. I feel like if I go personally, it would show more sincerity."

"Have you forgotten what I just told you?" Ethan frowned as he turned to face her, and Kate immediately swallowed whatever else she was about to say.

When they were upstairs, she had thought his silence meant he was okay with it. Clearly, she was wrong.

But it was probably better if she didn't go. She didn't want to worry him further.

"Okay, I'll follow your lead," she answered sincerely, and only then did Ethan start the car.

Before long, they arrived at the designated location near the hospital. When they got there, Milan was already waiting with ten security guards and a female doctor.

They nodded in greeting without much discussion.

"Mr. Levington, we've confirmed that there are two guards outside Gloria's door and one hidden in the stairwell," Milan reported. Ethan nodded.

They went up together. Gloria was on the sixth floor, and when they reached the fifth, Kate stayed behind with Helena and several security guards, hiding in the shadows.

They didn't enter the stairwell, fearing they might alert the guard on the sixth floor.

Helena remained tense the entire time, and Kate tried to comfort her. She kept checking her phone, worried something might go wrong, but it wasn't long before Ethan successfully brought Gloria downstairs.

Once Kate received the message, she quickly led Helena down to meet them.
