Chapter 57

Ruby

"Really?" I could tell he really didn't believe me.

"Yes. But only if you'll forgive me." To my surprise, he burst out laughing.

"You have nothing to be sorry about."

"But I-" His lips rendered me speechless as he kissed me again.

"From this moment on we leave the past behind us. We start over. I will treat you the way a mate should." I squealed as he picked me up bridal style.

"Where are we going?" I asked smiling. I couldn't help but smile.

"To our room. That is if you agree to move into it with me." I could see the uncertainty in his expression. Being the cruel person I was, I decided to make him sweat.

"So you think I'll move in with you just like that? You think everything is perfect and the problems between us just go away because you want to start over." The look of horror on his face was priceless. I found it hard to contain my laughter.

"But I thought-"

"You thought wrong. Put me down. I'm perfectly capable of walking on my own. I'm no damsel." He placed me on the floor and I saw the pain and confusion written all over his face.

"I'm sorry. You're right. I shouldn't have assumed anything. I'll just go." He headed for the stairs, and I couldn't torture him any longer. He really was in pain.

"Phoenix come back. I was only joking. Of course I'll move in with you. You have to earn my trust. We have to start from somewhere." He ran over to me and his smile made my heart flutter. I was in his arms again.

"Thank you. I was worried I screwed up again. You almost gave me a heart attack." I was glad he had a sense of humor.

"I wasn't kidding about the damsel part though. I'm no princess," I told him honestly.

"And I'm no prince charming. So we're perfect for each other." We made it up the stairs. Instead of him trying to ravish me, he just asked me if I wanted to watch a movie. We talked and laughed with one another until we feel asleep. We still had a long way to go. Our relationship was fragile. I didn't know how it would all turn out for us. But in that moment, at the point in time, together we were happy.

I needed some time to myself after everything that was going on. Everyone was worried. But I knew things were going to be okay. We weren't given this fate to fail. At least that's what Jewel's always said, and I believed her. We were meant to survive, that I was sure of. No one ever said things would be easy for us. I think a little pain and suffering was sometimes necessary. How else could we gain strength?

I always believed that no matter how bad things got, they could always be worse. Somewhere out there was a person whose life was worse than any of ours could ever be. I constantly told the girls that. We had to learn so that when the time came, we could do what needed to be done and save our kind. The battle was drawing nearer. Everyone could feel it. But only we knew of the epic battle that was soon to come. I hope my mate, wherever he was, would appear soon. The quicker we found him and Jewel's mate, the sooner this all would be over. We could live our lives freely. I could almost see how peaceful things would be, how we all would live in harmony. No conquest of power, no destruction or war. A world the complete opposite of the one we had come to know.

"I knew I'd find you out here," Jewel said, coming to sit beside me.

"How'd you guess?"

"The tension in there is pretty thick. You're too much of an optimist to listen to everyone worry. You constantly look on the bright side. Between you and me, I think we all could use a bit of that right now." I just laughed and she shoved me playfully.

"Do you ever think of how it’s going to be after all of this over? How bright the future is? Even though the present seems so dark." She was silent a few minutes before answering.

"All the time. But you know me. I worry. We carry the fate of so many people on our shoulders. It bothers me to know that a lot of people won't survive. They won't get to see that beautiful world that you dream of. It saddens me." She was always so logical, so mature compared to the rest of us. It was scary sometimes.

"Stop going all mother hen on me. You're bringing me down," I said playfully, trying to lighten the mood. She laughed but it didn't last long.

"I'm sorry, I can't help it. As much as we want to, we can't save the entire world Dia." I knew she was right, I just didn't want to think about it.

"But we can try right?" I just needed to hear her say it. I just needed to hear everything would be okay. I wasn't going to give up hope. She knew that.

"Of course we can try Dia. We won't give up. I promise."
