Chapter 591
The light in the operating room glared brightly.
Christina watched people hurrying in and out through the doors. Every time the door swung open, her heart would jump into her throat, only to sink again as the flow of people continued.
The waiting was agonizingly long.
Christina's heart pounded relentlessly, her face pale and drawn, her eyes unblinking as she stared at the door.
Sebastian felt a deep sense of regret as he watched her.
Though he didn't yet know what had happened to Estelle and hadn't gotten to the bottom of it, the thought that he had been sulking when Christina needed him most made him want to slap himself.
He opened his mouth to say something, but no words came out.
After what felt like an eternity, Athena rushed in.
She had heard that Sebastian and Christina were at the hospital, but she had no idea about Estelle.
Seeing them sitting together, looking distressed, her anger flared.
"You two are grown-ups now, not toddlers. Can't you act with some sense? Every time something happens, I have to chase after you."
Athena's voice was almost shaking with anger by the end.
Christina remained silent, her gaze fixed on the operating room door.
Athena turned her fury on Sebastian, "Do you know how important today's meeting was? We've talked about this before. This meeting could decide your future as chairman. And yet, you were unreachable and vanished. Have you lost your mind?"
Since Sebastian and Christina had gotten back together, Athena had noticed a drastic change in him.
Sebastian used to focus all his attention on work. Now, work seemed secondary, with his main concern being to please Christina.
Athena raged on, but both Sebastian and Christina remained silent.
Her anger only grew, and she spoke coldly, "What is going on here? Are you shutting me out? Christina, you tried to hurt Tamsin's child. And what are you doing here? Explain yourselves. Why are you here?"
The Boleyn family only had a few members, and she couldn't figure out who was in the operating room.
To Athena, Estelle should be at school at this hour, not anywhere else.
Sebastian wanted to speak, but his throat was dry, and he couldn't get the words out.
After a moment, he found his voice, hoarse and strained, "It's Estelle in there."
"What? Say that again?" Athena was shocked, her mouth hanging open in disbelief.
To Christina, Athena's shocked expression seemed suspicious.
Maybe it was Athena who had done it.
In her distressed state, Christina had lost her ability to think clearly, and she was looking for someone to blame.
"Athena, are you happy now? Ever since Estelle came into this family, you haven't liked him. Especially now that Tamsin is pregnant, you think Estelle will compete with Tamsin's child for the inheritance. Does this make you feel good?"
"What are you talking about? Are you out of your mind?" Athena's eyes widened. "You think I did this?"
Christina sprang up from her chair, advancing on Athena. "Isn't it true? Ever since Tamsin got pregnant, your attitude towards Estelle changed. You were afraid Sebastian would leave everything to Estelle, so you did this, didn't you?"
"That's ridiculous. We've known each other for so long. Don't you trust me at all? I would never do something so despicable. How could I harm a child?"
Christina's suspicion was evident, and Athena was furious but couldn't argue too much with her, given that Estelle was still in surgery.
She slapped Sebastian's arm. "You explain what's going on. Why didn't you investigate? How dare you accuse me? I demand a thorough investigation to clear my name."
Athena couldn't deny that Estelle felt somewhat redundant to her now that Tamsin was pregnant. But she wasn't heartless enough to harm a child.
Besides, concerns about inheritance were years away.
Her only focus now was ensuring Tamsin's baby was born safely. She didn't care about anything else.
Clearly, both Christina and Sebastian suspected her.
Seeing their accusatory looks, Athena was livid. "Fine, you two are unbelievable. I've done so much for this family and the company, and now you think this of me."
She felt a deep sadness.
She wasn't perfect, but she would never harm a child.
"You two stay here. I'll find out what happened and clear my name."
Actions speak louder than words.
The truth will come out.
Athena turned and left, her anger evident.
Watching her storm off, Sebastian was thoughtful. "This has nothing to do with Aunt Athena. She's always been straightforward. She wouldn't hide something like this."
They had been through so much together.
He didn't claim to know her completely, but he knew that if Athena had done this, she would admit it.
Christina sneered. "Really? I've never seen a guilty person admit their wrongdoing."
"Do you have to talk like that? We're all family. She's my aunt and your elder. Saying things like that is hurtful."
"So what? If she did it, why shouldn't I say it?"
Christina's voice was calm but filled with sarcasm.
She had dropped her usual facade, showing a cold and bitter side.
Her eyes even held a hint of disgust.
In her mind, she blamed them for everything.
Sebastian felt guilty but had to defend himself. "If you want to blame someone, blame me. But don't take it out on Aunt Athena."
"Do you think that will work?"
Christina's voice trembled, tears welling up.
She was wrapped in a large coat, but her clothes were still damp. The cold she felt inside was far worse.
