Chapter 39 CHAPTER 39

Chapter 39 CHAPTER 39

Sera

I slammed my room door behind me, heart racing. How dare Lucian, trying to talk to me like I was still a child?

I walked to my bed and pulled out Dante's diary. If there was any insight it could show me, I would be most grateful for it.

I opened the first page.

Today, I chased a human.

What?

I continued reading the words, blood slowly leaving my face. This was his journal, from his early years of being a vampire.

I finally caught someone today. The first time my teeth sunk into their flesh, it was like tearing into the sweet meat of a pig, and the blood. It was so warm, so hot. I couldn't stop drinking, no matter how much I tried. They said it would come normal to me, but as I held the limp body of the man, all I could think was...more.

Holy shit.

Dante continued to describe the feeling, how much he enjoyed the chase. I flipped to the next page, and it was the same thing. Lucian and Caspian finally got mentioned, and they all went on hunts together.

I turned back, re-reading his words. He described humans like cooked meat. At some point, they were not vampires, if this diary was correct. No, they were normal humans, like I was and they made the choice to become...these monsters.

Disgust and bile rise up my throat. I quickly flipped to another page.

Everything changed, the minute I saw her.

Oh, this was interesting, I thought.

Her hair was the longest I had ever seen, her voice so soft, the wind could barely carry it...

"I did not know you enjoyed reading so much."

"Woah," I choked, turning back in shock. The diary flew from my hand, falling behind the desk as I stared at the last person I expected to see in my room.

"You know a door is there for a reason," I snapped, "you're meant to knock."

Caspian chuckled, raising his hands up. "I am so sorry," he apologized, "but someone that gets so irritated having their privacy invaded should not be reading someone else's diary."

"What, I, what," I babbled, attempting to lie.

In a flash, Caspian is in front of me, bending down and picking up the leather book on the ground. My face flamed as he put it on the desk, a small smirk across his face. "You should return it before the owner realizes it's missing."

"Oh I—"

"You know I cannot really figure something out," Caspian interrupted me, folding his hands. He looked good today, his eyes red but they looked at me with recognition. His hair was its usual style, soft curls falling across his face. "Did you hear me?"

"Sorry, what?" I blinked.

"What is going on between you and the others?" He repeated. "One was recently poisoned, after talking to you, and being here if I may add, and the other one well, let's just say he is deeply suspicious of you," he smiled, flashing a dimple.

I already knew Lucian was suspicious, the arrogant bastard.

"In spite of all these, I trust you. I don't know why, but I feel like you are a good person, although that permanent scowl doesn't help."

I rolled my eyes. "Much better," he laughed. "Listen, consider the ball as a way of us saying thank you for the changes in the castle, and we're giving you our protection."

I nodded. "Yeah, thanks."

"Don't let your past experiences with our kind stop you from enjoying it too," he said gently. "Afterall, it's your ball."

I had nothing to say to that. "I'll leave now," he said smiling.

I followed him to the door. "Thank you, Caspian."

"You know, the castle is usually very gloomy," he said, staring at me. "events like this don't happen often and when they do, they should be appreciated."

He opened the door, and with a small smile, closed it again behind him.

I stood there, staring at the door knob for a ridiculously long time. With a soft sigh , I went back to my bed and picked up Dante's diary again, opening it.

I tried to read it, blinking multiple times but the words were not as clear again. Caspian's words rang in my head.

If you want them to respect your privacy, respect theirs too.

I sighed, closing the book. The best thing to do will be to just take it back to his room quietly, that way he doesn't know I took anything from him.

I got up and headed for the door. Just as I opened it, a guard was standing outside. "My Lady," he bowed, "the vial is from Lord Dante, what you requested for."

I blinked. "Thank you," I whispered, shock in my voice. After everything, even making him drink something that caused him so much agony, Dante had not forgotten to keep his promise.

I took the vial from the guard, and he turned to leave. "Wait," I said, stopping him.

"Here," I held out the diary. "Give this to him, and tell him I said I was sorry. I only read the first few pages and nothing important, I promise."

The guard frowned, eyeing the boom but he still took it. I closed the door quickly, rushing to hide the vervain in my closet.

Now, I had something to fight compulsions with, I thought to myself. But taking it now might be risky, I didn't know how long its effects lasted.

No, the best night to take it, would be the night of the ball. I pushed the bottle behind a huge pile of clothes, praying to the moon goddess that Morgause or Ivan never got there.

When I was done, I moved backwards and stared at the clothes. The finest silk, leather, cotton all ready for me to wear. Caspian was right, I thought.

I was so focused on revenge, I had not actually planned anything for the ball. I pulled out a couple of dresses, placing them on the bed. I could enjoy the ball and still carry out my revenge.

I pulled the dress out and placed it against my skin, a soft smile forming.

Yes, I would enjoy this ball, very very much.
