RP Chapter 31
Kyle took her hand, and they began to follow the bank man back the hallway and toward the vault. Kacey squeezed Kyle’s hand a little and felt him relax a little.
As soon as the manager showed them the deposit box he left them without a word. Kacey squeezed Kyle’s hand tighter.
He looked down at her. “Are we ready for this.”
“Well, we’re here, so we don’t have a choice, let’s do this.”
Kyle slid the key into the box slowly and began to unlock it.
Kacey let out a breath as Kyle pulled out the box and sat it down on the chest height table. Kyle began to pull things out. Stacks of papers, more jump drives. Kacey grabbed the papers and began to leaf through them quickly memorizing everything.
~
Kyle stood back from Kacey and let her do her thing a little bit. He kept vigilant as she examined everything she could. He wouldn’t let anything happen this time, this would be different. He knew what was at stake, losing his girl and pissing off his best friend, uh-uh, neither one could happen.
He heard Kacey suck in a sharp breath.
Kyle jumped to her side in a split second. “What’s wrong?”
“Donny doesn’t just suspect Herz, he’s also thinking Kennedy, Sharps, and Sheldon, but they aren’t it I put Calhoun away when you guys first brought me on and Jackson away a couple years after, they both are out though, those are two very dangerous men, but who in our agency would deal with them?” Kacey turned her far filled teal eyes up to him.
“Sharps is a no way, same with Sheldon, Herz, no one trusts him, so him I could see, Kennedy is iffy.” Kyle went to wrap his arm around her, but she pulled away quickly.
“Kyle, this isn’t good, we’re in some real trouble, what are we going to do?”
“You’re going to calm down, we’re going to head back to AS, we’re going to work with Donovan on this and going to solve this, while we keep you safe,” Kyle could only hope the reassurance did what it was supposed to do and calm Kacey down at least a little. “I promise, babe, we’re going to handle this.”
Kacey began to gather everything in her arms. “Okay, then, we’ve got to get started like three weeks ago.” She began to head out of the vault and Kyle had no choice but to follow close behind her.
Kyle caught up to her enough to wrap an arm around her shoulders and pulled her close to him. “Stick close, baby, I’m not letting you out of my sight.”
“But, you- “
“No, no buts, stay close ad that’s an order.” Their eyes met and Kyle was waiting for the argument but surprisingly Kacey remained quiet as she averted her gaze.
They continued to make their way out of the bank to the AS Jeep. Kyle took Kacey to the passenger side and put her in quickly then headed to his side.
He pulled out of the parking lot as fast as he could. He glanced over to the beautiful woman, impressed that she didn’t put up an argument with him. He was getting her to act a little differently. She was picking her battles wisely.
Kyle made his way back to AS when something caught his eye in the rearview mirror. A black SUV with very dark tinted windows was only a couple of cars back, but with everything that had been happening he didn’t want to take a chance. He became even more alert but tried to keep Kacey from knowing it.
He apparently failed on that part because her sweet-sounding voice fell on his ears. “What’s wrong, Kyle?”
Kyle let out a sigh. “Just being cautions, there’s a black SUV a couple cars back with very dark tint, I don’t know if their following us but usually when a vehicle like that shows up it’s not good, I’m not going to A just yet, I want to see if they are following,” he reached over and tightened the hold of the seatbelt around her. “We’re probably in for a wild ride if they are following us, so just hold on.”
~
Kacey didn’t need to be told twice. She immediately began to pack away all the paperwork and jump drives as quick as possible then reached for the door handle and held on tightly as Kyle took a turn quicker than he should have. She darted her eyes to the side mirror and sure enough the SUV made the same reckless turn.
Her heart jumped into her throat as the SUV rushed up behind them. “Kyle!” she yelled out but was still too late as the Jeep was rammed hard and lurched them forward.
“Damn it, hold on Kace, are you okay?” Kyle demanded as he yanked the wheel into another turn and began to speed around the slow-moving traffic, weaving in and out with the SUV doing the same thing.
“Fine, we need back up though, we’re not going to be okay if we don’t get some help.” Kacey was panicking as Kyle took another reckless turn, sending her into the Keep door a little.
“I think we need to make a break for AS, I don’t think someone will get to us in time, get a hold of Cunningham, babe.”
Kacey did as she was told as neither one of them took their eyes off the SUV for very long as Kyle sped down the now empty road.
Just as Cunningham answered the phone they were rammed again, making Kacey let out a scream. She rushed through the explanations of what Kyle and she were up against.
“Okay, Kacey, Kyle’s right, you guys need to get here as fast as you can, lead them to us, we’ll all be- “
Kacey saw the car come at them from the side out of an alley before Kyle did, she didn’t warn him in time. “Kyle, look out!”
The sound of breaking car parts and glass and the sound of squealing tires surrounded them. All of a sudden the Jeep began to tip over and more glass shattered around them making Kacey scream again. The Jeep kept rolling for she didn’t know how long.
“Kacey! Kacey! What’s going on?” Cunningham asked just as the phone was knocked from her hand and lost throughout the Jeep. The Jeep finally stopped rolling. She shook her head a little trying to get rid of the fog and dizzying feeling, as it slowly went away she began to glance around the Jeep, her perception was coming back a little bit and she was realizing the Jeep was lying on the driver’s side, and her phone was gone. She looked sideways toward Kyle and the panic squeezed her heart tightly. “Kyle.” She groaned out, as she could just sit there, the seatbelt keeping her from lying on top of Kyle, or being somewhere worse, she took in the gushing head wound he now had and other small lacerations, which weren’t bleeding as bad.
