Chapter 92: Hybrid
Grace’s pov
Not eating dinner honestly turned out to be a bad idea.
I woke up in the middle of the night because I was hungry.
Being a hybrid, I used my nose to find the kitchen and found it in no time.
I was hoping for some leftovers, but I found something even better.
They had cookies and chocolate milk that I almost jumped with joy seeing it.
I stood in the kitchen and started eating but stopped when I heard footsteps coming this way.
I caught his scent and who it was before I even saw him.
Being a werewolf has its own perks because now I could prepare to seem.
He came into the kitchen and looked at me with a smile.
“I see you found the kitchen. Regretting skipping dinner aren’t we?” Joseph asked with a smile.
When I didn’t reply he looked around with a small smile.
“how did you find it?” he asked me, and I gestured my nose, and he laughed a little.
“I am stupid aren’t I? I forgot you are a hybrid” he said and again I didn’t say anything.
“how is it like? Being a hybrid?” he asked me a question that no one has ever asked me before.
Everyone when they hear that I am a hybrid they gasp and ask which side and which.
And all he stupid questions you can think off, but no one has ever asked me this.
“it’s hard, I never truly belong with the wolves. I am not fast enough or strong enough for them” I and he nodded.
“as for the witches you are stronger and faster than them. I bet they resented you for it” he said, and I looked at him surprised.
He understood it in just those words, how and why?
“it must have been so hard. I am sorry you had to go through that” he said, and I looked at him even more surprised than ever.
No one has ever apologised for that.
No one has ever related to that one thing about me.
have you ever had something that everyone thinks is this great gift and you should grateful for it.
but all it feels like to you is a curse, this heavy load on your shoulder that you cant take off.
It cant throw it away because you would be throwing this great gift that other people really want.
That you should be grateful for it, grateful that it chose me and all that.
I have never felt grateful of anything in my life so far.
So, imagine people telling me to be grateful of something that isolated me from the world.
How could I?
and he saw it, in just a few seconds he understood something that I spent years trying to explain to people.
“its okay, you get used to it after sometime” I said and took a sip of chocolate milk.
“what? I see great minds think alike, I came here for that combo right there” he said pointing at the chocolate chip cookies and the milk.
I took a glass a poured him some and he took a sip with a smile.
Chocolate milk and chocolate chip cookies are something that always held a special place in my heart.
They remind me a lot of my mother;
I remember one day when I saw young I woke up in the middle of the night.
I went to the kitchen and found my mother standing there eating this combo.
She poured me a glass of chocolate milk and gave me the cookies.
It became a tradition of ours from then on.
I always went downstairs hoping one day she will tell me she loves me.
but we just sat there in silence eating.
When I stopped hoping to hear any words of affection the atmosphere became quiet.
Come to think about it now it wasn’t a bad kind of silence but the peaceful kind.
How is it that I forgot these memories?
How is it that all this time I buried this at the back of my head all this?
Is it true that at times we often focus on the negative instead of the negatives?
If that’s the case then what else did I forget?
What else did I bury at the back of my mind and focused on the bad things?
There is a thing I heard that they do to test your mindset.
They put water into a glass halfway and ask your if the glass is half full or half empty?
If you say half full then you have a positive way of thinking and if you say half empty then you have a negative one.
I think what I did was just drink the water in the glass and left it completely empty.
I am so negative that the glass doesn’t even have anything in it.
That is why all this time I have been so focused on the negative memories.
Turns out that I also had some kind of good memories with my mother.
Like with my mother we just sat there in silence, the comfortable silence.
It was as if I travelled back in time and my mother was in the room with me.
I felt this joy, this warmth that even Harper doesn’t make me feel.
Hell Derek isn’t even close as well. after some time, we said goodnight and we went to our separate rooms.
I fell asleep the moment my head hit the pillow and it was actually good.
I honestly slept like a baby, no nightmares or walking up suddenly in the middle of the night.
The next morning, I woke and decided to join everyone for breakfast. I heard laughter even before I got there.
When I came in they all turned and looked at me,
“morning Grace, I didn’t want to wake you up since you slept late last night” Joseph said, and I just nodded.
Mary came to my side and held my hand dragging me to the empty seat next to her.
I sat down, “morning” I said to everyone, and they all said hello back.
“you look well rested Grace” Harper said looking at me and I felt well rested.
All that fatigue from the past few years just evaporated with one night of sleep.
Derek looked at me and gave me a reassuring smile.
“I feel well rested, Thank you Samantha and Jason. You have a very lovely home” I said, and they smiled.
Everyone started talking about everything else and the atmosphere was very lively.
It was all different from everything I have seen so far, reminded me a little of when I was living with Harper.
There was just always so much laughter and celebrations, the only difference was that I always felt like an outsider there.
But here I didn’t feel like one at all.
Maybe is it because Mira and Mary were doing all they could to include me in everything.
They would tell me about the stories behind every joke so I could understand them better.
They would even make sure to ask for my opinion about a lot of thing.
the girls obviously talk too much but Jason is the quiet one in the family.
I think he is a lot like his mother, Samantha obviously doesn’t talk too much.
While the girls obviously took after their father, the man can talk and leads all the conversations.
After that, I went to the training grounds with Joseph, and I noticed that Harper and Derek followed us.
“what are you doing here? Are you coming to train with us?” I asked them.
“we were asked to be your punching bag” Harper answered with a smile.
“punching bag? What do you mean?” I asked him.
“with magic sometimes you need people to test it on. Who is better than a werewolf and a vampire?” Derek answered gesturing between them.
So, they will be my punching bag as In I will be practising my magic on them?
I just shrugged, if that want to be used as guinea pigs then who am I to object?
When we got there Joseph looked at me as if he was deep in thought.
“after what you told me last night I got an idea of which spell I should teach you first” he said, and I nodded.
He opened a book and showed me the spell.
Since my mother always took me to witch camp I am familiar with the language the witches use.
“a barrier?” I asked him and he nodded.
“you said it yourself, that you aren’t as fast as pure werewolves. In this barrier everyone is equal is speed and strength. It is as if a human is fighting another one” he explained.
I nodded, that would be a quiet handy spell to have in my pocket.
“but Grace you should know something.
My grandmother created this spell.
Its was meant for only people in my family, so it takes time for other people to be able to use it.
Mary and Mira only mastered it on like the fifth day, so it will take you some time.
Just be patient and practise it” he said, and I nodded.
“I will be here whenever you need someone to practise on” Harper said with a smile.
Joseph did the spell and showed me how the barrier looked like and what it did.
I could feel both Derek and Harper in that barrier, their power was almost non-existent.
“want to give it a try?” he asked me, and I nodded. I tried but failed and I felt a hand on my shoulder.
I looked up and found Joseph looking at me with a smile.
“you need to be patient, I told you it will take time. Now breath in and out. I know you can do it, just a little bit” he said gently.
I tried again and again but I still couldn’t do it.
I have never been that strong of a witch, actually I have never been that strong of anything.
I am glad that someone came with this idea to train me and make me the ultimate weapon.
I know they did it because they didn’t want t to have to be the one to face Hendricks.
They want the mate he had and tormented to be the one to end him.
They would do anything to avoid having to fight themselves.
They would do anything to protect themselves in this situation.
“Grace you are doing great, lets give it a try for one more time” Joseph said and at time I could hardly breath.
How can someone push your so hard while being gentle at the same time?
I nodded and closed my eyes one last time and said the chant of the spell.
Suddenly it was quiet that you could even hear a pin drop.
I opened my eyes and Jason was looking at me like he just saw a ghost.
“you did it, you made the barrier. But how? In just one day of practise? This was made especially for Grayson witches.I couldn’t even do it in a day so how?” he said looking at me shocked.
“how?” he asked again.
