Chapter 10: First Kiss

Evie

"I'm what the wolves call the Alpha Lord," I mimicked Draven before rolling to my side, laughing like crazy. The unexpected reaction was actually a defense mechanism of mine. I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

This person, wolf, whatever, who I have loved since I was teenager, was so important that it made me feel really small. Although, Draven and Mama Agnes never treated me differently, now I understood why they kept to themselves and rarely had conversations with other people.

"What's so funny?" Draven asked, confused.

"You. You're so funny," I answered, wiping the tears from my eyes. "There's no such thing as the Alpha Lord. You're just making that up."

"How would you know? Are you wolf? You're just a mere human, Evie," Draven argued while implying that being human was inferior to him. Obviously, I touched a raw nerve.

"Ahem. Who was the person who saved you from being struck by a car while it skidded through slippery ice?" I asked, reminding him of my heroism. He rolled his eyes at me.

"You," he answered matter-of-factly.

"Exactly, me. The one person you've just called a mere human, wolf lord," I pointed out, refilling my empty glass with more margarita. I gulped it down, loving its sour and salty taste.

"That's Alpha Lord, human," Draven corrected me.

"Yeah, yeah. So if you're this wolf lord, then how about Mama Agnes? Did she have a title?" I asked, rolling over to lie on my stomach, my toes wiggling in the air. "You have to answer quickly. No lying."

"Mama Agnes was a lowly Omega from a wolf pack living in Chippewa Falls. She's at the bottom of the rank, although if I wasn't such an asshole, I could've elevated her status," he stated mournfully. "Mama Agnes was part of mother's team of household workers, then she became my nanny when I was born," Draven explained while filling my glass. "When my parents died, that's when she became my guardian."

"It's so astonishing," I murmured after sipping some more of my drink.

"What is?"

"How the lowest in rank do the most work and still have a positive outlook in life while the highest in rank are playboys who change women like they're changing their underwear," I said. Fine, I was a bit tipsy and when I'm tipsy, I can be brutally honest. "Did Mama Agnes like humans? She liked me and my parents... and oh, she liked the grocery store owner, Mr. Wilkes."

"Mr. Wilkes is wolf, Evie," Draven admitted to my surprise. "And yes, she's okay with the humans. She loved you, right?"

"Yeah, she did and I loved her back," I replied, agreeing with him. "I've always meant to ask you this, but you know me, I don't want you to think of me as nosy. I remember you telling me your parents were attacked. Were they murdered just like Mama Agnes?"

"That's a good question. Yes, actually, at our vacation home in Aspen. Everything points to rogues which are banished wolves, but Mama Agnes and I suspected it was the one person who would gain the most from my parents' passing... my Uncle Maverick. When my parents died, since I wasn't of age yet, my Uncle Maverick became Alpha of the Blood Moon Wolf Pack, the most powerful wolf pack in the world. However, since I'm alive, his Alpha Spark, a power which also makes our eyes glow a specific color, refrains from giving his eyes the red glow reserved only for the true Alpha Lord," he explained. "My father was what wolves call a True Alpha. He became Alpha out of sheer will and power. My Uncle Maverick, being the firstborn, was expected to become Alpha, yet when he first shifted, his eyes didn't glow red to his dismay, instead his eyes were blue. My grandfather postponed his ceremonial appointment as Alpha and waited for my father, his second born, to complete his first shift. When it happened, my father's wolf's eyes gleamed blood red for all to see. He was appointed Alpha of Blood Moon immediately."

"I don't understand, Draven. If your dad was Alpha Lord, then even when attacked, he could have easily killed these wolves you call rogues. I mean, come on, you're like three times the size and your mouth can like swallow me whole. What happened?" Draven looked at me impressed I was able to point that out.

"As I said, my father was a True Alpha, a rare kind of Alpha who doesn't kill. Killing would diminish even destroy his Alpha Spark, making him lose his rank as Alpha."

"I'd rather live as an Omega rather than die as an Alpha," I said. "I know it sounds like I don't have principles, but I'd rather defend my own... especially when I have a kid to raise. Since I've seen you, uhm, defeat a wolf, so it's okay if you kill another wolf?"

"I'm not a True Alpha. I inherited my father's Alpha Spark, so yes, it's okay if I kill."

"So why is your Uncle Maverick still chasing you down when he already got what he wanted. He's Alpha right?

"Yes, but he wants my Alpha Spark. The only way to get my Alpha Spark is to kill me. He will gain my strength and my power and finally get these damn red eyes, so no one will ever question his authority. Without the blood red eyes, he will not gain the respect of the wolves."

"And again, I'm confused. Why you? Didn't he get your father's Alpha Spark?" My head was beginning to spin. It was a lot to digest and all so confusing.

"A True Alpha's Spark can not be taken or stolen. This is why he sent the rogues to kill my father and this is why he is now after me. I have the Alpha Spark and because I am not a True Alpha like my father, he can take it from me. All he has to do is kill me. He and only he alone should be the one to kill me. He is also as big as me, but much older. Yet, he is cunning. My strength may be unparallel, however I have been at odds with my wolf. Mama Agnes was right. I should start mending my relationship with my wolf."

Again, his words confused me more. Relationship with his wolf? How the hell could he fix that?

I shook my head and sat up, allowing the cool breeze and the fresh air to calm my spinning head.

"So why did they kill Mama Agnes?" I asked. "I mean they're after your Alpha Spark, so shouldn't they be knocking on your door instead of hers?"

"Honestly, I think they made a mistake. They weren't suppose to kill Mama Agnes. They were suppose to use her as bait given she means a lot to me," Draven answered.

"Oh, I see. To get you to come to them," I said, nodding my head. "Woah. You said I'm in danger. So does this mean they'll use me as bait too? But as you said, I'm just a mere human. Why would they want little old me? I'm just your bestfriend. I mean nothing to you. If they want to kidnap someone, they should kidnap Cheryl." Draven laughed. I looked at him with a puzzled expression on my face wondering what was so funny.

"Cheryl is no use to them. None of my past romances are. Actually, even if my wolf detests the fact that I play around, it was a means to an end. I needed them to think one of these women was my intended mate as a precaution. Although my past girlfriends were entertaining at some point," Draven smirked.

He has been playing around? What the?

I raised my hand, looking up into the starlit sky. I was angry. "It was a means to an end? What the hell are you talking about, Draven? You never loved any one of your girlfriends? Not even Cheryl? But you would call me in the middle of the night whining like some spoiled brat about how Cheryl was going out with her friends, how she would max out her credit card, that you suspected she was cheating on you. Do you know I was contemplating turning off my phone so I could get a good night's rest?!"

"I'm sorry, Evie. I truly am," Draven rushed over to sit beside me. He pulled me towards him and cradled me in his arms. Whatever angst and ire I was feeling, immediately dissipated into thin air. I closed my eyes and rested my head on his muscular chest, smiling blissfully. I felt happy and content. I didn't mind if I didn't share his bed. I was completely satisfied with just a simple hug.

"Hey," Draven placed a thumb on my chin and lifted my face to look at his. "I know this may sound strange, but I can't sleep without hearing your voice. During the nights I don't call you, I listen to the recordings I have of you at our meetings or the videos I've taken when we visit Mama Agnes or do some sightseeing. I used my girl problems, so you would talk to me. I can't call you asking about work in the middle of the night when you finish your work on time all the time. This is why I wanted you to move in downstairs, so I could sleep knowing when I wake up, you'll be there downstairs to greet me."

Awww... I felt a wave of happiness that I had never experienced before. If I had only known, I would have moved in downstairs in a heartbeat without any regrets... even if I was scared of earthquakes.

My heart skipped a beat as I gazed into his dark eyes. Our faces were so close, I could smell the tequila on his breath.

He inhaled deeply, breathing in the scent of my hair, and I noticed his eyes began to emit a red glow. It was so mesmerizing to watch...

My face inched closer to his like I was under a spell... his tantalizing hypnotic spell. My spine was tingling, my heart was racing, my body was trembling... begging for more.

"Draven," I whispered. "I want you to-"

I couldn't finish my sentence. His lips claimed mine in a passionate kiss. It was my first ever kiss and I was so happy I waited. I have always wanted it to be Draven.

My first love, my first kiss, my first... everything.
