Chapter 183. The Math
Chapter 183. The Math
Sirens tore through the night as Vera and her children were rushed into the emergency room.
Doctors and nurses flanked around them, ensuring they didn't give up on treatments.
Though her vision blurred, she could see people on white pushing her in a trolley, using some of their life support machines on one of her kids.
She was out of danger, yet her thoughts kept drifting back to her children, leaving her heart unable to find rest.
“My kids, please” She muttered, groaning in pain.
Dull ache still lingers in her neck, a reminder of how Toby had tightened those strong ropes on her neck.
“Your kids are doing well, Miss Archibald. They're gonna be fine.”A warm female voice struck warmly.
Vera didn't recognize the woman speaking but somehow, she believed the woman's words. It was a glimmer of hope and strength to her. That was all Vera needed at the moment.
Doctors and nurses gathered Elon around. His condition seems worse than his brother, Ethan.
And since he had surgery some months ago, It helped in contributing to the severity of his condition.
“His pulse is low!” A female nurse screamed out.
“Guys come on , we've got to save him.” Another male voice echoed, his voice laced with urgency.
While many of the health care professionals focus on bringing Elon back to life, one other doctor and two nurses focused on Ethan.
Ethan sustained a few injuries around the neck, his wrist, and his waist. Those bruises were as a result of how hard the monster, Toby, had whipped him.
“The kid's very strong” The doctor said as he applied ointment to the affected area of his skin.
“What kind of a man traps kids in a car? I hope these kids and Miss Archibald get Justice” A female nurse, let out her frustration.
“Of course they'd get justice. The monster has been arrested” The doctor replied with fulfillment in his heart.
Elon's pulse was still weak even after thirty minutes of trying. However, the doctors and nurses didn't relent. All hands were on deck to bring the kid back to life.
The machines beeped loudly, each one flashing a mixture of green and red lights.
All over Elon's body, there were connected different types of tubes both in the chest, nose, and wrist.
“No palpitations yet! Come on, we can do better.” The doctor's voice echoed in urgency.
Panic filled the room as the doctor started cardiopulmonary resuscitation, pressing hard against Elon's chest.
“Pulse is still weak! No palpitations!” one nurse by the side of the vital signs monitoring machine announced, fear filling her eyes.
All effects to bring little Elon back to life were becoming futile. Doctors have exhausted their energy both physically and mentally. But there was no sign. No results. No improvement.
So, they had to rush him at once into the theater to check his heart condition.
“ Hurry! Transfer him to the theater" Panic filled the doctor's voice.
Very Swiftly, the nurse transferred Elon inside the trolley, rushing him to the theater.
Meanwhile, Ethan, who was in the same ER, had just opened his eyes, and suddenly gave out a shrill cry when he realized he was being surrounded by strangers.
“Mommy, Elon, grandpa, Nanny” He sobbed, terrified by the sight of the doctors.
The doctor immediately felt pity for him . He held Ethan's little fingers, helping him relax.
“ It’s okay…It's okay… you’re safe now. We’re not going to hurt you. We’re here to take care of you, alright?” the doctor assured, his voice warm and soft.
Ethan didn't believe the doctor. He squeezed himself, panicking.
The other nurses smiled warmly at him, patting his shoulders.
“You don't have to be afraid, darling. We're your best friends”
“I want to be with my mom,” he sobbed. “ That uncle… Mr Toby, strangled my mommy and brother “ he narrated, just exactly what he saw Toby do.
A pang of pain settled in the doctor's heart and he let out a measured breath.
Ethan had already witnessed the horrifying scene. It might begin to gnaw at him psychologically.
Just as the doctor and nurses continued to cheer Ethan up, Alec and Richard rushed inside the ER, accompanied by the presence of one male nurse.
Josh had to return home after contacting Richard that night.
“Oh my goodness!” Richard exclaimed, his breath thumping as he saw Ethan's bruised body.
“Mr , Archibald, you're here now.“ The doctor turned to Richard and further shook hands with him and Alec.
“ Grandpa!” A certain euphoria filled Ethan's heart, sending fear away at once.
Alec's eyes narrowed to the kid on the bed but he couldn't quite see his face as he was already surrounded by nurses.
“We’re so sorry for all that happened to your family, Mr Achibald. But I assure you that everything is in control” The doctor said, giving Richard hope.
“Grandpa, Mr Toby tried to kill mom, Elon ,me… he whipped me and my brother hard,” Ethan reported, as tears kept brimming down his eyes.
Richard crouched and hugged him. “Everyyhing Is fine now… it's okay” Richard sighed, turning to the doctor. “ Is my other grandson going to be alright? They said Is condition is quite critical.“
One of the nurses obstructing Alec's view moved aside and Alec got to see the little kid who had been talking for the first time.
Alec was wondering if truly, the kid belonged to Vera. And if he does, who then is their father?
Glaring at the kid, Ethan, Alec already guessed his age rightly in his mind.
‘Six years old' Alec whispered in his mind.
Instead of focusing on something else, Alec was busy doing the math in his head.
If the children truly belonged to Vera and were exactly six years of age, that would only mean two things.
Either she was pregnant before the fire incident six years ago or she opted for an adoption.
Seemingly, it is impossible for Vera to be in a new relationship that same year and get pregnant immediately.
Something must be missing here… A truth she hasn't told him yet.
