Chapter 97
Lucas's POV
"You think he's going to die?"
I shot back at Tasha. She was like a shell with no ability to think right now, refusing to listen to anything anyone said, yet constantly worrying about whether Campbell might suddenly drop dead.
She grabbed my hand and shook it hard, her eyelids red, stammering in panic, "Lucas, I agreed to help you deal with Campbell, but you can't let him die right now. This is my party. If he dies here, how am I supposed to explain this to the Volker family? Are you trying to destroy me?"
Tasha got more and more worked up, and people passing by outside couldn't help glancing our way.
Tasha cleared her throat, her face twisted, threatening me in a low voice, "Lucas, if you just stand by and watch him die today, I will definitely expose you. Neither of us will get away with this."
Tasha had lost it. All she wanted now was to get herself out of this mess as quickly as possible.
I recalled the last time I saw Campbell. Logically, he shouldn't be unable to get out of bed.
Someone else must have provoked him.
I wasn't affected by Tasha's emotions and asked her calmly, "Where is Campbell now?"
"In the hotel upstairs. He's exactly like a vegetable right now. I'm really afraid he'll stop breathing any second."
I hesitated for a moment, then turned to look at her, "Take me to see him."
"What good would that do? You're not a doctor." Tasha rejected me without hesitation. She stared at me, taking a defensive stance, "I'm warning you, there's no way I'm letting you be alone with Campbell. I don't trust you. I can't let you hurt him again."
Tasha was on high alert, treating me completely as her enemy.
"If I really wanted to kill him, I would have done it already. Why would I give you a chance to catch me?"
I looked at Tasha coldly and asked her one last time, "Calling a doctor now won't help. Never mind how long it would take him to get here, if Campbell really can't hold on, even just the distance between floors could be fatal for him."
I paused, then continued, "I'm guessing you're not planning to send him to the hospital either."
"Of course, he can't go to the hospital." Tasha didn't hesitate, "Nobody knows Campbell has been secretly using banned drugs. If I send him to the hospital, this scandal will definitely get out. Then both our families' reputations will be ruined. I absolutely cannot allow that to happen."
Tasha's reaction was understandable. They couldn't afford to lose face like that.
I completely understood Tasha and walked slowly toward her, saying, "That's exactly why I need to see him. I have experience dealing with injuries. At least I can tell if he's going to die or not. You need to get his private doctor here right now. My private doctor doesn't know his medical history, so it won't help if he comes."
Tasha looked at me with suspicion, refusing to make the call.
Just as I was getting impatient and about to lose my temper, she finally told someone nearby to call Campbell's private doctor.
After giving the order, she stood beside me with her head down, looking nervous.
She seemed really afraid of me seeing Campbell's private doctor. I looked at her with some surprise, "Is there a problem with Campbell's private doctor?"
Tasha's head shot up, her reaction a bit slow, "What problem?"
She tried to act calm, but she still couldn't hide the panic on her face.
I stared into her eyes for a long time, still feeling her reaction was off, "If there's no problem, why are you so nervous? Don't tell me this private doctor is hiding some secret?"
Hearing my words, Tasha quickly shook her head. She was so anxious she stamped her feet, but couldn't get a word out.
Her reaction was really strange, which made me curious about who Campbell's private doctor actually was to make her this nervous.
Could the private doctor have a bad relationship with Tasha? Was that why she was so nervous?
Or did the private doctor do something to Tasha?
I didn't think too deeply about it. As Campbell's woman, Tasha should theoretically have supreme honor and status, but the person she married was Campbell after all—a complete psycho. The torment she received probably far exceeded what she gained.
She looked glamorous on the outside, but inside, she was already full of holes.
Tasha's fingers cracked as she clenched them. I could very clearly feel her tension.
She smoothed the hair by her ears and explained to me with a gentle expression, "He's just an ordinary private doctor. What secret could there be? Don't overthink it."
"Alright, I was just joking. Why are you taking it so seriously?"
The more Tasha acted this way, the more it proved that this doctor had a big problem.
Looking at Tasha, she clearly knew about the secrets behind this doctor too.
After Tasha had someone call Campbell's private doctor, she suddenly looked at me seriously, "The doctor should be here soon. The party isn't over yet. I just had the kitchen make a new dessert. Are you sure you don't want to go try it?"
"Are you sure you just want me to try it?"
Tasha's purpose was too obvious. I could guess her intention without even thinking.
Tasha's body trembled, and she looked at me, stammering, "I, I of course just want you to try the desserts made by our pastry chef."
I stared into Tasha's sincere eyes. "But right now I want to go see Mr. Volker. He is my elder after all. Something like this has happened, I should at least go check on him as his junior. Besides, his episode now might very well be because of me. How can I just leave without caring?"
Hearing my words, Tasha looked conflicted.
She tugged at the hem of her clothes, her face turning pale.
I didn't give her time to think and looked at the person beside me, "Take me to see Campbell."
The person lowered their head nervously, looking at me anxiously and saying, "But Ms. Green..."
"I'll take you."
Before the person could finish, Tasha spoke first, "If you have this intention, I couldn't be happier. Let's go, I'll take you."
I smiled and nodded at Tasha, "That's more like it."
Tasha gritted her teeth. From the corner of my eye, I could see her slightly bulging cheeks. She must be very unhappy right now.
I followed behind her, holding Eleanor's hand tightly, and went to the hotel upstairs.
Before opening the door, Eleanor took a deep breath.
I knew this was a difficult thing for her. No one could naturally face someone who had once tried to hurt them, even drugged them.
I was worried Eleanor couldn't handle it psychologically, so I turned to remind her, "Eleanor, you can wait outside for me."
Eleanor glanced at the environment outside and hugged her arms tightly, shaking her head frantically. "I'll go with you. I also want to see just how pathetic Campbell looks right now."
I was a bit surprised and asked her with my eyes. Only after getting Eleanor's firm response did I pull her hand and walk into Campbell's room.
