Chapter 77: Edmund’s Obsession

Kyle’s P.O.V

I picked up my glass of whiskey, the amber liquid swirling inside, and took a slow sip as I made my way to the couch. Roan followed me, his steps heavy on the hardwood floor. We both settled down, the sound of the cushions sinking beneath our weight almost too loud in the quiet room. Roan didn't waste any time, his sharp eyes locking onto mine as he took his own glass in hand.

"So, what did you mean earlier?" Roan asked, his voice low and smooth, the whiskey already starting to loosen his tongue. "When you said you understood what Edmund meant in the elevator. What the hell does that mean?"

I set my glass down on the coffee table, trying to clear the fog in my mind. I didn’t want to go back to the moment in the elevator, but I couldn’t avoid it anymore. There was too much at stake now, too much I had to figure out for myself and for Elyse.

"Remember the day before Elyse was discharged?" I said, glancing at Roan as his eyes narrowed. "The day I saw Cam getting into Edmund’s car again? The one where I ran into Edmund in the elevator right before?"

Roan nodded, his gaze sharpening. He was with me now. He remembered that day all too well.

"Edmund said something to me that stuck with me ever since," I continued, my voice a bit quieter now, almost like I was unsure of the weight of the words I was about to say. "He said that he was interested in Elyse because he could be a ‘switch.’"

Roan leaned forward slightly, his expression unreadable. He didn’t interrupt, just let the words hang in the air for a moment, like he was considering what they meant. I couldn’t tell if he understood immediately or if he was still processing it.

I took another sip of my drink, the burn of the whiskey settling in my chest. "At the time, I didn’t get it. Hell, I just thought he was trying to get under my skin, some weird power play or whatever. But now, after everything that’s happened… I get it. The implications are much deeper than I thought."

Roan didn’t say anything right away. He just sat there, still as a statue, letting the silence stretch out between us. He seemed to be working through it like he needed time to put the pieces together.

"What the hell does ‘switch’ even mean?" Roan finally asked, his voice thick with the weight of confusion. “Is that asshole talking about sex positions? To someone he barely knows?”

I could hear the skepticism in Roan’s voice. I didn’t blame him. If I didn’t know better, I would think the same thing. But the truth was, Edmund’s words were starting to make sense in a way I hadn’t expected.

“No. That’s not it.”

Roan leaned back onto the couch, swirling the whiskey in his glass as he gave me a look that was equal parts amused and exasperated. "Alright, alright, Kyle. You’re gonna have to break this down for me. I’m not as smart as you, so could you explain it in some language even I can understand?" he said with a smirk, clearly trying to lighten the mood, but there was an edge of genuine confusion behind his teasing tone.

I couldn’t help but chuckle. Roan might have been the sarcastic type, but I knew he wasn’t dumb. He just liked pretending he was when it suited him.

"Alright," I began, leaning forward, tapping my fingers against my glass in rhythm as I gathered my thoughts. "At first, I too thought Edmund was talking about a simple sex position, you know? Because Alphas—like me—are usually the ones who top. We’re expected to take control. And then there’s Elyse... well, he’s the bottom when it comes to us. Always has been."

Roan’s eyebrows shot up as he spat out a quick laugh. "TMI, man. Seriously. I didn’t need the details."

I shrugged, not missing a beat. "Well, you asked for it. But I’m getting to the point. So, yeah, that’s what I thought. I thought Edmund was just being his usual self, trying to push boundaries or whatever. I didn’t think much of it at first. But then, as I kept thinking about it—about everything that’s happened—I realized there’s more to it."

Roan took another sip of his whiskey, his gaze sharp now, a little more serious than before. "So, what’s the catch? Why does this have you so tangled up?"

I could feel the weight of the words I was about to say, but they needed to be said. "It’s because of something Edmund said. He’s not like other Alphas. That’s because he’s not an Alpha at all. He’s... an Enigma."

Roan’s expression shifted, a little more confusion creeping in. "Enigma? What the hell does that even mean?"

"Not a lot of people know about it," I explained, rubbing my chin thoughtfully. "But an Enigma is a rare type of Alpha. They aren’t like the others. Most Alphas have a very specific role—dominant, possessive, and all about control. But an Enigma? They’re different. They’re unpredictable. They can switch an Alpha to become a submissive one. They ‘switch’ an Alpha into the role of an omega."

Roan stared at me for a long moment, and I could see him trying to process it, but there was still a lot to chew on. Finally, he broke the silence with a slow, "So, what does that have to do with anything? Why does Edmund’s... Enigma-ness matter?"

I took another sip, letting the whiskey burn down my throat before I spoke. "Here’s the thing. Edmund didn’t just mean he wanted to sleep with Elyse. There’s more to it. He wasn’t just interested in controlling him; he was interested in changing him. And that’s where the Enigma thing comes in."

Roan leaned forward, his curiosity piqued now. "Changing him? What do you mean?"

I leaned in as well, lowering my voice a little like I was about to reveal something deep and dangerous. "See, the thing with an Enigma is that they don’t just flip roles. Anyone who sleeps with an Enigma—any Alpha who does—it changes them. They don’t stay the same. They become... like the Omega they’ve been with."

Roan’s face twisted in disbelief, and I could tell he was trying to wrap his mind around what I was saying. "Wait. You’re telling me... if Edmund slept with Elyse, he can... became an Omega?"

I nodded, the weight of it all pressing down on me. "Exactly. And it’s not something you can just take lightly. Any Alpha who has sex with an Enigma..they’ll turn into an Omega themselves. Worse is…Enigmas can impregnate Alphas as well."

Roan went silent for a long moment, his eyes fixed on me like he was trying to piece everything together. I could almost hear the gears in his head turning.

"So that’s why Edmund was so interested in Elyse, huh?" Roan finally muttered, his voice quiet, almost like he couldn’t believe what I was saying. "Not just for some power trip. Not just for sex. He was planning this... whole thing. Trying to turn Elyse into something he could control, and in the process, he’d impregnate him as well."

I felt the tension rise in my chest again. "Exactly. That’s the twisted part. Edmund knew what he was doing, and so did Cam. So if Cam is pregnant with Edmund’s baby…where does that fit into his plans? I always thought he was obsessed with Elyse.”

I was still processing all of it when I heard it—a voice, soft but sharp, cutting through the haze of my thoughts.

"Why do you think Edmund is obsessed with me?"

I froze, my stomach tightening as I slowly turned toward the voice. There, standing in the doorway, was Elyse.
