Chapter 59

Annabel

It’s about 5:30 pm and I’m currently sitting along Sam’s couch when his phone instantly pings. My curiosity spiking at who it could be. His phone resting along the table as my eyes continue to stare.

Sam currently in the bedroom. A bedroom in which he and I share. Sam, not trusting the dorms after what happened to Alyssia. Sam worried that if Mr. Hendricks could find Alyssia then it would only be a matter of time before he came looking for me as I was the one who smacked him with Alyssia’s ceramic object.

Sam’s phone pinging again and again.

My hand quick to grab his phone in which I now see two messages from Zac. Concern rising within me.

“Um… Sam baby… Zac messaged you” I yell, unable to know what it said due to his phone being locked. Sam a very private person in most cases. Sam taking that time to exit the room. Our eyes locking on the other.

“Unlock the phone then baby” replies Sam once standing before me.

“I can’t. I don’t know the pin to your phone.”

“Yes you do.”

“No… I don’t.”

“Yes, you do. It’s your birthday. Your month and day, I keep it simple for that reason.”

My face blank of any emotion as I stare between the man I love and his phone. A smirk resting along his face as if he enjoyed my current blight. The need to roll my eyes evident as I quickly enter the pin. The phone unlocking as I do.

“So… what’s it say? What he text me?”

My fingers quick to open the text. My eyes pausing when reading the message. A huge ass grin soon rising the longer I do. A wave of excitement beginning to grow. “Oh. My. GOD. Zac and Alyssia are having a boy. They want to have dinner with us to help celebrate the news.”

“What?! Let me see that.”

Sam quick to approach before gently taking his phone. Sam eager to read the message. His own grin rising. “Well I’ll be. Looks like congratulations are indeed ordered for this.”

Sam quick in turning to me. A playful look resting along his face. A look I knew all too well considering we’re dating. A look that said we needed a child. A bundle of nerves beginning to rise. Those tiny butterflies that Alyssia always mentioned now present in me. Sam one of the select few people to make me feel the way he does. Everyone else just a bunch of assholes.

“Sam….”

“I think it’s time that we tried for one don’t you?”

“Oh god. Your encourageable.  Do you even want kids? Or do you just want them because of Zac and Alyssia?”

That tiny need to know if Sam truly meant what he said or was simply just teasing. His words not sitting well between us. Sam a simple man but a hard working one. And one who worked hard at what he wanted.

Sam blinking when hearing my words.

“Of course I want kids baby. And not just because Zac’s finally having one at 32. But it’s because I finally found the woman I want to spend my forever with.”

What? His forever? He can’t be serious… is he??

My one butterfly now turning to millions. Each one swarming me like a wave of scary bees. Like one random word set all of them off. Sam careful when coming to sit beside me. That one touch drawing my gaze. Sam and I soon locked on the other. His face honest in what he said.

“Look Annabel. I know it hasn’t been long since the two of us started dating, but if there’s one thing I know, it’s that having you here, in my space, means more to me than anything else.”

“Now you’re just being weird.”

“No I’m not. I’m being honest and real. And right now I’m being completely honest. I want you. Here. With me. Carrying my child. And hopefully, becoming my wife.”

Wife? Oh sweet Jesus. This man, I swear.

My face soon showing him every little emotion I was currently feeling. Feelings from shock to disbelief to even happy. But most of all, hesitation. My heart scared at being hurt. Again.

“Now your speaking crazy. How about we take it slow and see where it leads us kay. We can talk about kids and more later.”

Sam eventually sighing.

“Sorry. Your right. I guess I got too caught up within the moment. Let’s just celebrate with Zac and Alyssia and we’ll circle back on the whole child thing later, okay.”

Sam then quick to stand. Almost like he didn’t want me to see his face. His expression.

Guilt beginning to rise within me. That little known fact that it was all because of me. The feeling not sitting well within me. The fact I turned him down when he was only being honest now hurting my heart.

Fuck.

Sighing, I quickly grab his hand before he has a chance to move away completely. Our eyes back on the other. “Sorry. That’s not what I mean nor how I feel. Look, I wanted to have this conversation with you, when I knew exactly how to word it, but not like this. Not when Zac and Alyssia are waiting for us. But maybe… once we’re alone, we can talk more. Like truly talk?”

A small smile beginning to rise along his face. Almost like my words were like a tiny confession. “Sure, I’d like that. Now let’s hurry. Zac wants to meet up around 7:30 pm and it’s now almost 6.”

“What? It was only 5:30 the last time I checked the time.”

“Yeah well… time flies when your having serious discussions about babies and marriage. Now let’s go.”

A small giggle now rising as I allow Sam to drag us towards the bedroom in where we proceed in getting ready for tonight’s big celebration.
