Chapter 40

"What do you think he wants to talk to me about?" I asked softly.

Cynthia and I have been sitting silently in Malachi's hospital room, to see his broken body in person was a different type of heartbreak. Anger strangled me, wrapping around my throat with its unforgiving grip. I ran a hand through my hair as I refocused myself on Cynthia, silently awaiting her answer.

She pursed her lips in deep thought, "I'm not sure. I know he seems to finally accept that there is something special between you two. Especially if your wolves are calling to each other first, normally that part of us is beyond difficult to tame."

"You don't think he's going to push me away again, do you?"

"If he does, I'll chop his nuts off. Idiots like him don't need to breed."

I melted into silence again as I mulled over the thought, the fear of rejection had hit me full force. After the first time, we weren't as close but now I know my feelings for him, if he were to shove me away again it would break me. I almost sneered in disgust at myself, annoyed that I had turned into that type of female. The one who goes from being independent to falling in love with her own weakness, the very man that could break her into a thousand pieces. I ran my hand through my slightly knotted hair, trying to distract myself from my anxious thoughts.

"Go to him," Cynthia suddenly voiced, pulling me from my mind.

I snapped my attention to her, "What?"

"Go, I'll text you once Malachi wakes up. I feel like you two seriously need to have whatever this talk is. It'll help settle everything and calm you down. I can hear your heart pounding."

I was hesitant, but eventually decided it would be a good idea to see Obsidian. We needed to talk, to figure out what we're going to do about the connection being formed between us. I gave her a thankful smile before stepping out into the hall, my heart picked up speed as if it were trying to race. Pulling in a shaky breath, I made my way to the hospital's exit as I attempted to hide my shaking hands.

As I passed by the pack members, they all stared at me with curiosity before bowing their heads in respect.  I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion, but chose to ignore their actions, assuming it was only because they sensed I was a royal. I forced a smile at them and nodded, acknowledging each wolf as I made my journey to the packhouse. As I grew closer to the large and now intimidating mansion, I could feel myself slowing down. My whole body was basically shaking now, I felt as if I couldn't grab in any air for my starved lungs and my heart felt as if it were going to explode. However, I tried my best to push the anxiety away as I slowly pushed the front door open to the familiar foyer.

"You can relax, I'm not going to kill you."

I jumped and spun to see Obsidian leaning against the wall on the opposite end of the foyer, his eyes shining a beautiful amber color. I studied his eyes, stunned by the odd change of colors. I have never seen him or anyone with amber colored eyes, especially considering his normal eye color isn't even close to that.

He pushed himself from the wall and strode towards me, his eyes never leaving mine. Once he was close enough, he simply pressed his forehead against mine and closed his eyes, breathing in deep breaths. He was trying to control himself, I could feel his emotions, his beating heart, the shakiness of his own hands. Something was troubling him, and it worried me, for the first time in a while, I was concerned about his mental state.

"What's wrong?" I asked softly.

He swallowed, "I'm scared I'll be like my father."

I silently sat down on the couch in his office as he paced back and forth, his jaw clenched, and his eyes clouded over with thought. I remained silent, allowing him to sort through his many thoughts before opening my mouth. He finally came to a stop and sat beside me, he bit his lower lip as he glanced at me.

"I don't want to hurt you like my father did to me and my mother," he murmured.

I frowned, "Well, if you tried you know I can easily fight back. But Obsidian, I highly doubt you'll be anything like him."

"You thought I was him before we met."

"I know...and it was wrong of me to assume such things about you. My father told me you're far better than your father and I believe him. After being around you for a while now, I'm starting to see the amazing man and alpha you truly are."

He stared at me for a second, "This bond...."

"If you want to accept it, then I'll happily accept you as well. If you don't, well, I can get over it," I smiled reassuringly.

Despite the fake confidence that was laced through my words, I knew I wouldn't be able to handle it well. I'm falling in love with him if I'm not in love already, his scent, his looks, his touch, his presence, it all drove me insane. I wanted to be near him, to put my lips on his and be able to tell everyone he's mine.

He frowned, "I'm not rejecting you, not ever. I... I can't be without you anymore, it's killing me."

I stared at him in surprise, "Really?"

"I think I love you, Sylvia."
