Chapter 139
Melanie's POV
The soft glow of candlelight and the twinkle of garlands wrapped around the staircase banister made the dining room feel almost magical. The air was thick with the aromas of roasted meats, spiced wine, and fresh-baked rolls, making my stomach grumble in anticipation.
Platters of steaming food filled every inch of space. Roast beef surrounded by caramelized vegetables, golden potatoes dusted with rosemary, bowls of vibrant salads, and an assortment of bread rolls that looked fresh out of the oven.
When we heard no movement on the steps, Zoey gave a sharp clap of her hands and called out to the men, her voice cutting through the hum of conversation.
"Dinner is ready! Boys, come join us!" she said.
I heard the sound of footsteps on the stairs as Adriano and the rest of the men made their way over.
Adriano entered first, his presence commanding as always, but his warm smile was reserved for me alone. My heart gave a tiny flutter, and I smoothed my dress nervously.
As the men filed in, Zoey introduced me to each of them, her pride in Adriano evident in her tone.
"This is Melanie," she said warmly, a smile lingering on her face. "Adriano's girlfriend."
The word hung in the air, almost foreign to me. It felt both surreal and grounding, as though I was stepping further into Adriano's world with every passing moment.
The men proceeded to greet me one by one with Adriano's father, Marco, taking the lead with a firm handshake.
His uncle Luciano, gave me a light hug and made a teasing comment about Adriano "finally bringing someone home" and the rest of the men followed suit, each of them greeting me in their own way.
It was a bit overwhelming to be the centre of attention but they were all lovely.
"Welcome, Melanie," Marco said, his voice deep and steady. "It's good to finally meet you. We've heard a lot about you."
I also noticed that Adriano was like a replica of his father, the resemblance was so uncanny that it felt like I was getting a peak into how Adriano would look when he was his father's age and I had to admit, I liked what I saw, not that I was lusting after my man's father.
I cast a quick glance at Adriano, whose faint smirk told me he was enjoying my slight embarrassment. "All good things, I hope?" I managed my voice light despite the nerves fluttering in my stomach. There was something slightly intimidating about him.
"Of course," Antonio replied, his eyes twinkling with warmth making him calm down a little.
"Now that we've got the introductions out of the way, can we eat now?" Zoey asked.
The meal began, and the conversation flowed as easily as the wine. Stories and laughter filled the air, creating a symphony of familial love that was impossible not to be swept up in.
Camilla, sitting across from me, leaned forward with a knowing smile. "So, Melanie, back to the conversation we were having a while ago in the kitchen. How exactly do you do it?"
"Do what?"
"Handle Adriano's intensity."
I nearly choked on my sip of wine, but Adriano's hand on my knee under the table steadied me.
"He's… definitely not as intense as people make him out to be, at least not to me," I said, my tone teasing as I glanced at him. "I think he's the sweetest person."
The table erupted in laughter, and even Adriano chuckled, his thumb brushing against my knee in silent reassurance.
"Only for you, baby." Adriano winked at me, causing me to blush hard.
As the evening wore on, I felt myself relaxing more. The initial awkwardness of meeting Adriano's family began to fade, replaced by a sense of belonging I hadn't expected to feel. It was easy to see where Adriano got his strength and charm, his family exuded both in spades.
After the plates were cleared and dessert had been eaten Zoey declared no one could possibly eat another bite. I had to admit I didn't believe we could decimate the meal until it happened before my very eyes.
The family moved to the living room for presents. The Christmas tree stood tall in the corner, its branches heavy with ornaments and twinkling lights. Piles of brightly wrapped gifts spilled out from underneath, a chaotic yet beautiful testament to the family's generosity.
Aria assigned herself the task of handing out the gifts, her laughter ringing out every time she mistakenly passed one to the wrong person.
Thankfully, Adriano's parents liked the gift I got them. For his mom, I gifted her a complete bath set from bath and body works along with a few scented candles on Aria's recommendation.
Zoey reacted to the gift as if I had gifted her with a three-carat diamond.
Just when I thought we were done handing out presents, Adriano handed me a small, elegantly wrapped box, his expression unreadable.
"For you," he said softly.
I hesitated, suddenly feeling the weight of the moment. Around us, the family was still laughing and chatting, but it all faded into the background as I unwrapped the gift. Inside was a delicate silver bracelet, its charm a tiny heart etched with the letter 'M' for my name.
"It's beautiful," I whispered, my throat tightening.
Adriano leaned closer, his lips brushing my ear. "You belong here, Melanie. With me. With us."
His words, simple yet profound, brought a lump to my throat. I nodded, unable to speak, and slipped the bracelet onto my wrist.
The men filed into the kitchen to clean up shortly after and the night ended with hugs and warm goodbyes, Zoey pulling me into a tight embrace and whispering, "You're always welcome here."
As Adriano and I stepped out into the crisp night air, snow gently falling around us, I glanced at him. "Thank you," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.
"For what?" he asked, his brow furrowing slightly.
"For an amazing night and introducing me to your family," I replied.
His hand found mine, his fingers intertwining with mine as we walked toward the car. "You've always belonged here, Melanie. I just had to make you see it."
And at that moment, with the bracelet cool against my skin and Adriano's hand warm in mine, I believed him.
