Chapter 145: ♥ Chapter 144 ♥
POV: Nico Russo
05:30 AM • Centro Sportivo Olimpico • Rome • Italy
The pre-dawn darkness of the Olympic training facility feels heavier than usual as I lace up my spikes, knowing that today's performance could determine whether my childhood dreams survive the collision with family security requirements. Coach Bertelli's announcement yesterday still echoes: "Nico, the Olympic selection committee meets Friday. Your times this week will determine Italy's final roster."
Everything I've worked toward since I was six years old, condensed into four days of trials that will be witnessed by sports journalists, federation officials, and media representatives whose questions could expose family secrets we've spent years protecting.
"You look tense," observes Marco, my training partner, as we warm up on the track. "Olympic nerves?"
"Something like that." I stretch my hamstrings while calculating the number of people who will scrutinize my background if I make the team. "Just processing the magnitude of the opportunity."
"The magnitude of making Olympic history, you mean. First Russo to represent Italy in international competition."
If only he knew how complicated that family recognition could become.
Coach Bertelli approaches with his stopwatch and the serious expression that means business. "Nico, today we establish baseline times for Olympic consideration. No pressure, but everything we've worked for comes down to these next few runs."
"Understood, Coach."
"And remember, there will be media presence today. Sports journalists documenting the selection process. Stay focused on performance, not distractions."
Media presence. My stomach clenches as I spot the photographers and reporters already setting up near the finish line.

The first sprint feels clean and powerful, my body responding to years of disciplined training and natural talent. Coach Bertelli's satisfied nod when he checks his stopwatch gives me hope, but the gathering crowd of officials and journalists makes every subsequent run feel like a performance under unwanted scrutiny.
"Excellent time, Russo!" calls out Dr. Martinelli from the Italian Athletics Federation. "We'll want to discuss your family's support system and training resources for our documentation process."
Documentation process. Background verification. Media interviews about the successful family business that enables Olympic-level athletic development.
After training, I find Valentina waiting by the team bus, her sports federation jacket and official credentials marking her as someone with insider knowledge of selection procedures and requirements.
"Ciao, campione," she says, kissing my cheek. "How did it go?"
"Good times. Coach thinks I have a real shot at selection."
"Of course you do! Papa's been monitoring your progress, and he's already preparing documentation for your family background verification." Her enthusiasm is absolute and terrifying. "He wants to schedule a meeting with your parents this weekend to discuss Olympic protocol and media management."
My chest tightens. "Media management?"
"Standard procedures for athletes representing Italy internationally. Family interviews, background features, sponsorship considerations." She studies my expression with concern. "Is something wrong? You look pale."
"Just the pressure of Olympic consideration. It's overwhelming."
"But in a good way, right? This is everything we've dreamed about."
If only our dreams included family history that could survive international media scrutiny.

Over lunch, Valentina excitedly discusses our future as if Olympic selection is guaranteed and unproblematic. Her confidence in our relationship and my athletic potential makes my ongoing deception feel even worse.
"If you make the team, Papa thinks we should consider engagement before the Olympics," she says casually while reviewing training schedules. "Italian Olympic families often use the international attention to celebrate important milestones."
"Engagement?" The word comes out more strangled than intended.
"Well, yes. We've been together two years, we're clearly compatible, and combining our families would create interesting opportunities for sports administration careers." She reaches across the table to take my hand. "Unless you're having second thoughts about us?"
"Not about us. About the timing and public exposure that comes with Olympic-level athletics."
"Nico, what are you worried about? Your family is successful, supportive, and completely legitimate. What could be problematic about media attention?"
Her innocent question highlights the fundamental gap between her assumptions and our reality.
"Valentina, what if I told you my family's background includes complexities that might be difficult for sports journalists to understand or present fairly?"
"What kind of complexities?"
Before I can answer, my phone rings. Giuseppe.
"Excuse me," I tell Valentina, stepping away from the table.
"Nico, we need to discuss your Olympic situation urgently. Sports journalists are planning comprehensive features on Italian Olympic families, including detailed background profiles and financial verification of athletic support systems."
"Timeline?"
"Interviews scheduled for next week with you and your parents. Refusing would create more suspicion than participating with careful preparation."
"Giuseppe, what if we can't manage this level of scrutiny?"
"Then you'll need to choose between Olympic dreams and family security. But Nico, there might be another approach."
"Which is?"
"Coordinated family disclosure. Angelo's wedding planning, Antonio's EU position, James's UN appointment, and your Olympic selection could demonstrate our complete transformation from traditional business practices to contemporary legitimate success."
After hanging up, I return to find Valentina watching me with the expression that means she's processing inconsistencies and drawing uncomfortable conclusions.
"Nico, that wasn't a routine family business call, was it?"
"Why do you ask?"
"Because you get the same calculating expression your brothers get when they're managing complex situations. The same look you had when I mentioned background verification and media interviews."
Her perceptiveness forces a decision I've been avoiding for months.
"Valentina, what if I told you my family's evolution toward complete legitimacy has been more complicated than I've been able to explain?"
"I'd ask what you mean by 'evolution' and 'complicated.'"
"I'd mean that understanding my background requires accepting that some successful Italian families have histories that don't fit conventional academic categories."
She studies my face with the analytical skills she's inherited from her federation official father. "Nico, are you asking me to accept something that's currently problematic or just something that's historically complex?"
"Historically complex. Everything my family does now is completely legitimate. But understanding our present requires acknowledging our transformation from traditional Sicilian business practices."
"And if I can't accept that complexity?"
"Then Olympic selection becomes irrelevant because the most important relationship in my life would be over."
My phone buzzes with a text from Dr. Martinelli: "Nico, preliminary Olympic selection looks very positive. Expect official confirmation Friday. Prepare for media interviews and family background features next week."
Friday. Three days to either trust Valentina with truth that could change everything between us, or lose both my Olympic dreams and the woman I love to secrets I can't keep indefinitely.
But tomorrow, I have to decide whether love is worth the risk of complete honesty.
