Chapter 62: June’s POV
June’s POV
The story that was spreading around about me was all lies. I didn’t know where it was coming from but each time I hear about it, I don’t feel comfortable because it contradicts the woman that I have known myself to be.
At first, I thought I had heard wrong. I thought it was just some rumors that came out of nowhere. But when I started to hear it from a different person, it was then that I realized that there was an agenda behind it. Someone was pushing for it to travel very fast.
I was walking past the break room when my name slipped out of someone’s mouth. It wasn’t loud. It wasn’t even meant for me to hear. But it reached me anyway, soft and sharp at the same time.
“…left her sick mother just to go to Las Vegas…”
I stopped walking.
Where did this come from again? How are they talking about my sick mother all of a sudden again?
I didn’t go anywhere to abandon my mother. I only went to Las Vegas because I needed some time out.
Is this really the agenda? That I left my mother to go and see somebody else?
I was completely confused.
I took a deep breath as my hands tightened around the file I was holding. For a second, I couldn’t move. My heart started beating faster, like it was trying to warn me about something I didn’t understand yet.
Without hesitation, I turned my head but it was slow.
The door to the break room was slightly open. I could hear low voices inside. Two women. I recognized one of them, Ella from accounting. The other voice was softer, unfamiliar.
I was trying so hard to figure out who the other person was because the voice was quite strange. I still have not found out.
It was too difficult.
But then, just when I was about to walk away, I heard a voice again
“I’m serious,” Ella said. “That’s what I heard. The mother was really sick, and she just… left.”
“That’s cold,” the other woman replied. “I didn’t think she was that kind of person.”
I shook my head hesitantly and quickly took a step back. I could already feel a heavy lump on my chest, and it was dragging backwards because my ears were ringing.
Ringing very loudly.
I couldn’t believe that it was still about my mother. What are they talking about that involves her?
One minute is Las Vegas and the other minute is my mother.
Something was definitely wrong somewhere and it was only my friend who knew about my journey to Las Vegas because she actually suggested that I follow her.
Did she tell anyone?
A place known for parties and clubs, no one would ever think of finding me there because of the kind of structure I have put behind myself. They have all seen me as this rigid person.
And this is what is getting the whole issue complicated. And I didn’t blame anyone for it.
They should just stop talking about my mother and that was all I needed. I wouldn’t blame anyone for accusing me. They have the right to think about what they like.
I took a step back before they could see me and then I swallowed hard and forced my feet to move again. Each step felt strange, like I was walking in a dream. Or maybe a nightmare.
Because none of it made sense.
I would never leave my mother when she was sick.
Even if that was going to happen, it would only mean that that was the last option I had. What was I even fighting for? Wasn’t it all about my mother?
Now they think I would leave her for somebody else. That’s just a big joke.
I was gradually waiting for any of them to come and comfort me. That’s really going to be trouble for that person and me. They don’t just know me.
Maybe they knew, but they were just trying to get under my nerves. They wanted to get me provoked and they are definitely going to get it.
I thought about it again, about the story that was traveling around. Even when I tried to push it away, I wouldn’t be able to because it had already made my stomach twist.
I did not waste any more time there again, I just headed straight to my desk and when I reached there, I sat down slowly, my hands shaking as I placed the file on my hand on the desk.
I was supposed to be working on it, but I couldn’t even open it. I just stayed at it like it wasn’t important at that moment.
But of course, it wasn’t important because there was a lot of messing up inside my head and I was trying so hard to understand the whole thing.
Just a few weeks, and I am having so many crises. Do they really hate me like this?
I didn’t even have any other questions to ask except that. That could be the only reason why I was getting so much bad treatment, especially from the people I thought were supposed to watch out for my back.
They think I abandoned my mother?
A quiet laugh escaped my lips, but it didn’t sound right. It sounded broken. I think you should go back and have a think about what they were trying to put out on the Internet.
Because I had seen it in one of the blogs with my picture on it, stating that I left my mother for somebody else. The whole comment session was talking about how greedy I was.
Maybe a proper interview will end all of this because… “No,” I whispered to myself. “That’s not true.”
All of these couldn’t be true. But where did this information come from? Who is spreading it?
I tried to look around the office to see if I could find a suspect, but I could not see any. The only difference was that something we were looking at.
But that shouldn’t be a problem for anyone.
It was small at first. The way people glanced at me and then quickly looked away. The way conversations seemed to stop when I walked past.
The way the air felt was different, like something had changed without me knowing.
My chest tightened even more. How long has this been going on?
I tried to focus on my work, but I couldn’t. The numbers on the screen blurred. My mind kept going back to those words.
Las Vegas.
I did go there. But not for fun.
This was all because of Declan. If he had not cheated on me with my own cousin, I wouldn’t have gone there in the first place. I wouldn’t have thought about going there with Cassy.
It was just a simple trip to end the pain that was inside of me. I just wanted to feel calm and forget about what the bastard did to me.
I heard my cousin screaming his name in pleasure… what could be more painful than that?
