Chapter 59: June’s POV
June’s POV
A few minutes after I had just completed a job, I had my name from my side.
“June”
I quickly turned around and found my colleague standing beside my desk. I thought she was busy. I wanted to ask, but I just swallowed it immediately and then concentrated.
“You called me…” I gasped.
“You okay?” she asked.
Although I didn’t know why that question was coming, it was also safe. But I looked at her for a moment completely surprised that she was suddenly talking to me after she pretended like she was busy earlier.
She was asking if I was OK and that was completely strange. “I’m fine,” I said automatically.
If it were before now, I wouldn’t even say anything, but a lot has changed already for today.
She nodded, but her eyes searched my face like she didn’t believe me.
Then she hesitated.
I could already feel that she had something to say, but she was just skeptical. But I was skeptical about what actually happened because they were involved with me.
I looked away, then back at her again. It was obvious she wanted to say something, especially with the way she was moving her lips.
But for the next few seconds, she didn’t even say a word and when she noticed that I wasn’t lying when I said I was OK, she immediately took a step back and then muttered
“It’s fine, I was just checking up on you.”
I didn’t believe that.
Was she just checking up on me? It doesn’t make sense because I remember I tried to speak to her at first when I just came inside the office.
She didn’t really give me a good response and I felt really betrayed by her actions. Even though she was busy, she could have at least said something that would be reasonable. Or maybe something that will keep me along in the line
But the face with which she looked at me back, it was obvious that that face was carrying grudges, although I didn’t want to believe that those grudges were for me. I just have a belief that it was for somebody else perhaps somebody could have gotten really angry before I came.
I tried to push the words away, but they remained inside my head for some good seconds because I was wondering why everybody was looking out for me. Before she even came, other persons have been talking about me and some even came to the table to check if I was doing OK
I don’t need anyone to tell me that something was going on behind the scenes. It was already obvious.
But the feeling quickly died when it was late in the afternoon. Although I wasn’t really comfortable. Not getting comfortable meant a lot of things and it wouldn’t even make me concentrate properly.
Then I thought about Declan and Whitney. I noticed I had not seen them for the whole day and I was beginning to suspect something. Was it that they got punished because of what happened the last time?
I didn’t really know because I knew they would not just stay back and not come to the office. Even though one of them was busy, the other wouldn’t fail to come around.
If not for work, Declan would probably be here because he wants to see my face. Then Withney would also want to come because she wants to feel superior and also cause trouble.
Most especially with me.
I sighed and quickly pushed my chair backwards, then I stood up like I needed air.
I was actually needing it because even with the amount of air conditioning in the office, I couldn’t breathe properly. The atmosphere was hitting me and it was all because of these issues.
Just before I could even take a step, I felt his presence.
Declan.
He was just looking at me from a quiet corner.
Has he been there all this time? Has he been staring at me?
I really didn’t know, but the look on his face said everything. He has probably been standing there for a long period of time and it could also be possible that he had entered the office earlier and must have gotten details of what happened before he came.
His eyes didn't move when he noticed I had seen him. He was just looking at me and for that moment, everything stopped, including the noise in the background.
It was just us looking at each other and while I was still standing there, something else made my skin prickle.
Declan had always been observant. Quiet. The type who noticed things others didn’t.
But this felt different. It wasn’t just a normal look. It was dangerous from the look of things because it was obvious that he was trying to plot something against me.
He was just studying me.
I managed to force a smile, not knowing what I should do.
He didn’t respond and he didn’t move either. If it were before now, even though the smile that was coming out was covered with sarcasm, he would definitely respond to it.
Instead, his gaze sharpened slightly, like he was trying to read something in my face.
Then, after a few seconds, he looked away.
Just like that. Like nothing had happened.
But something had changed inside of me. Panic was all over my body because I wasn’t feeling like I was safe anymore.
He was definitely angry with what happened the last time and wanted to get back at me. That was all I could copy from the look on his face.
I did not go to where I was going again, I sat back down slowly, my thoughts racing.
What was going on? Why was he watching me like that?
Why was everyone acting strange?
I pressed my fingers lightly against my desk, trying to think. This was because I didn’t want to think that it was probably what happened the last time that was getting him this upset.
Then at what stage would Whitney be? She will definitely be furious.
But I really didn’t care about anything.
She was getting what she really wanted. All of these wouldn’t have happened if she had decided to stay cool, even after stealing Declan away from me.
I stood up again, this time more suddenly. I couldn’t sit there anymore.
I needed answers. Even if it was just small answers.
If it’s going to continue like this, I wouldn’t mind dropping my duties and looking for something else to do. I had already gotten into so many troubles already and it wasn’t nice.
“Hey,” I found him behind me.
“What do you want from me?” I asked curiously, my voice gradually breaking.
“You thought you were actually going to get away with what you have done?” He sneered. “I got queried out of nowhere.”
If he got queried for what he did to me, then he honestly deserved it. At least I was sure that somebody was on my side. Or maybe the company was on my side.
