Chapter 43: The ghost of my past
During the week that came, the board meeting was a whirlwind of legal filings, executive appointments, and relentless damage control. Klark moved into the President’s office, his efficiency and quiet command instantly stabilizing the company. We were a seamless unit, rebuilding the empire brick by brick. The personal space between us had solidified into a shared, safe commitment, but the shadow of the betrayal still loomed.
I was in my private office late Thursday afternoon, reviewing the updated anti-collusion protocols Klark had implemented, when my security alert buzzed. It was an anonymous notification from the front gate security team, a message Klark had specifically set up to bypass the standard channels, reserved only for extreme, unexpected security breaches.
The message was one word: RICHARD.
My heart stopped. Richard. The first traitor. The man who started the cascade of betrayal. He was supposed to be ruined, out of the country, facing extradition threats over the original fraud charges.
I immediately called Klark. “Richard is at the gate. How did he get back into the country?”
“He likely used a diplomatic passport he acquired years ago,” Klark replied, his voice instantly sharp and operational. “His assets are frozen, but his legal status is complex. I’m mobilizing security now.”
“No,” I cut him off, making an immediate, risky decision. “Let him in. But only to my private office. No one else is to know he’s here. I need to know why he risked everything to come back.”
Klark argued briefly, his tone laced with protective urgency. “Rita, he is a criminal. He is dangerous. He could be wearing a wire. He could be sent by the remnants of Stanton.”
“If he wanted to hurt me, he wouldn’t come to the front gate,” I insisted, the old emotional connection warring with my new, hard won logic. “He wants something personal. I need to close that chapter, Klark. I need to end the ghost.”
Klark conceded, but his final instruction was firm. “I am coming up now. I will be in the observation room. The audio is recorded. The room is safe. If he moves, I move.”
Ten minutes later, Richard stood in my office. He looked completely different. He was thinner, his expensive suit rumpled, and the arrogant glint in his eyes was replaced by a deep, weary regret. He looked like a man who had lost everything and knew he deserved it.
He walked into the room, and I felt a brief, agonizing flicker of the old attraction, the dangerous, chaotic thrill he used to inspire. I immediately stamped it down.
“Rita,” he began, his voice raspy. “Thank you for seeing me. I know I have no right to be here.”
I remained seated behind my massive desk, a barrier of mahogany and power between us. “You have charges pending, Richard. You committed massive fraud against my company, and you directly assisted a hostile takeover attempt. State your business and then leave.”
Richard didn’t flinch. He walked slowly to the center of the room and simply stood there, looking utterly defeated.
“I didn’t come here to defend my actions,” he said, shaking his head slowly. “The fraud, the lies, the greed, it was all real. I was a desperate man chasing the next high, and I convinced myself that stealing was smart. But I didn’t come here to talk about the company.”
He looked directly at me, his eyes filled with a raw, agonizing sincerity that was painfully reminiscent of the man I used to love. “I came here because I need you to know the truth about what I did to us.”
Richard began a devastating confession, a brutal accounting of his own moral collapse. He admitted that the moment I asked for a divorce, he panicked. He realized he didn’t just love my power, he loved the woman who challenged it. But instead of fighting for me, he retreated into his pride and his greed.
“The fraud wasn’t revenge, Rita,” he confessed, tears blurring his eyes. “It was self destruction. I was so angry that you chose the company over me, that you chose your future over the chaos I represented, that I decided to ruin both of us. I let Nelson manipulate me. I gave him the secrets. I thought if I brought the company down, you would have nothing left but me.”
He paused, taking a ragged breath. “I chose money over you. I chose the lie over the honesty of our passion. And when I saw the news headlines about Nelson, I realized the monstrous truth.”
“What truth, Richard?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper, the pain of the past months resurfacing.
“Nelson didn’t just use me to steal your company,” Richard revealed, his voice laced with pure remorse. “He used me to ensure I would be permanently out of the picture. He knew I still had feelings for you, Rita. He knew I was the biggest personal threat to his plan to seduce you. Nelson didn’t just want the company; he wanted to destroy the man who had your history.”
He shook his head again, the gesture one of deep, agonizing regret. “I lost you not because you divorced me, but because I was too blind to see that the man I was dealing with was a moral void. I became part of the very thing I hated. I let my jealousy of your strength ruin my life.”
He looked at me, his eyes pleading for understanding. “I made terrible mistakes. I lost my soul. I risked everything to come back here, Rita, not to get money or power. But just to look you in the eyes and tell you that I am so sorry for what I did to you. And that I know now, I will never love anyone the way I loved you.”
The sincerity was overwhelming. I was utterly unprepared for the raw, human collapse of the man I had spent months trying to hate. He wasn’t a monster, he was a deeply flawed, self destructive man who had realized the depth of his failure.
His apology cracked the hard, protective shell I had built around my heart. I remembered the passion, the shared dreams, the years we had spent building our life together before the greed took over. It was agonizing.
But then, the counterpoint hit me, the face of Nelson’s abandoned son. The man Richard had allied with was a beast. And Richard himself, in his self destructive rage, had been willing to destroy the legacy of the woman he claimed to love.
“Your sorrow is noted, Richard,” I said, my voice hardening, forcing the emotional wall back up. “But sorrow does not erase a criminal record. It does not replace the billions of dollars you tried to steal. And it does not bring back the truth I lost when I discovered who you truly were.”
“I know,” Richard whispered. “I don’t expect forgiveness. I just needed you to know I finally understand.”
He paused, then asked the question that hung in the air. “I saw the news, Rita. About Klark. I’ve always known he loved you. Did you finally choose him?”
“I chose honesty, Klark, and loyalty,” I stated, making the decision absolute. “I chose the man who protected the company and protected me, even when I wasn’t listening. I chose the man who builds, not the one who destroys.”
The door to the observation room opened and Klark walked out, his face rigid, his eyes fixed entirely on Richard. He had heard every word of the confession and the vulnerable exchange. He hadn’t waited for my signal, his protective instinct had overridden his professional training.
Klark walked straight to my desk and placed his hands firmly on the mahogany surface, claiming the space beside me. It was a silent, powerful claim of ownership and protection.
“The meeting is over, Richard,” Klark stated, his voice low and dangerous. “Your apology is registered. Your presence is now illegal.”
Richard looked at Klark, a flicker of the old jealousy momentarily returning to his eyes, but it quickly faded into resignation. He knew he had lost.
“Klark,” Richard said, a hint of respect in his voice. “I always knew she needed your quiet strength. You win. Take care of her.”
Richard turned to me one last time, his expression one of final, desperate closure. “Goodbye, Rita. I hope you find the peace you deserve.”
He walked toward the door. Klark signaled to the security team outside, and Richard was quietly escorted out, not as a captured criminal, but as a defeated ghost.
The moment Richard was gone, the tension in the room snapped. I stood up and walked around the desk, leaning against the cold mahogany. The encounter had left me deeply shaken. Richard’s regret felt real, but the wound he inflicted felt realer.
“He was honest,” I whispered to Klark. “He was truly sorry.”
“That doesn’t change the truth of his actions,” Klark stated, walking over to me. He took me in his arms, holding me tightly. This embrace was a desperate need for both of us, a reassurance against the shadows Richard had stirred.
“His remorse doesn’t negate the abandoned child Nelson has,” I said, forcing myself to remember the new, unshakeable truth. “I can’t pity Richard. If I had stayed with him, I would have enabled the destruction. My choice to leave was the only sane one.”
“It was the correct choice,” Klark affirmed, his lips brushing my forehead. “And your choice now is the only one that matters.”
“I know,” I whispered, inhaling the clean, honest scent of his suit. “But he reminded me of the chaos I once craved. He reminded me of the thrill.”
Klark pulled back slightly, his eyes holding mine. “I know, Rita. I know that part of you. But I promise you, I will never let you be bored. We are rebuilding an empire, fighting legal battles against billionaires, and protecting a massive family secret. Our life will not be boring. But it will be safe. I am your chaos management, Rita. And I am not going anywhere.”
His words solidified the choice. Richard was the past I had to survive; Klark was the future I had to fight for. The ghost had returned only to confirm that the present was the only reality that mattered.
“Go to the security team,” I told Klark, placing a firm kiss on his lips. “Ensure Richard leaves the property immediately and contact Ms. Sharma to deal with his legal status. When you come back, we close the office. I need you to just hold me tonight.”
Klark nodded, his expression softening into a deep, tender commitment. “I will be back, Rita. The past is closed. The future is ours.”
When he left I stood alone in the quiet office, the faint scent of Richard’s cologne already fading, replaced by the clean, strong scent of Klark’s lingering presence.
