Chapter 158: Us forever

Ethan's POV

I walked into the room, the weight of the conversation I was about to have pressing heavily on my shoulders. Caden was already standing by the large windows, his back to me, staring out at the vast expanse of land outside. His shoulders were tense, every line of his body wound tight with the strain of the situation.

Alpha Ronan was seated at the large, oak table in the center of the room, his hands folded together, his posture regal and unyielding. I could feel the strength of his presence, even from across the room. It was that quiet authority that made him so imposing.

I knew what I had to say. I just didn't know if I had the courage to say it.

As I moved further into the room, my mind raced. Emily. Lila. The pregnancy. The mess Reuben had created. The twins still out there, in danger, and I could see it all unraveling faster than any of us were prepared for.

I cleared my throat before I spoke, breaking the thick silence that seemed to hang in the air. "Alpha Ronan," I said, my voice steady but carrying an undercurrent of sincerity.

Ronan's sharp gaze locked onto me, his eyes narrowing slightly. "Ethan." His voice was low, controlled, but there was an undeniable edge to it. The type of edge you don't ignore.

I swallowed. This wasn't going to be easy. "I owe you an apology," I said. I wasn't sure why, but saying it out loud seemed like the right thing to do. "For all the secrecy. For not coming to you sooner. But, after everything that's happened... I realize I should've told you everything much earlier. I should've been more open. I understand the distrust, and I know you have every reason to be furious with me."

Alpha Ronan's gaze didn't soften, but there was a flicker in his eyes that suggested he was at least listening. He didn't speak, so I took that as my cue to continue.

"I've failed Emily," I admitted, the words tasting bitter on my tongue. I could see Caden glance over his shoulder, his eyes catching mine for a brief moment. There was no judgment in them-only understanding. But it was Ronan's stare that pinned me down now. "I should've protected her. I should've kept her out of this mess, but now... now it's too late for regrets."

Ronan's posture shifted slightly, and I could tell he wasn't taking my words lightly. The silence stretched, growing heavier by the second. I could feel the weight of the room closing in on me.

"And now?" Ronan finally asked, his voice even more commanding than before. "What are you going to do about it?"

I had prepared for this moment. I knew what I had to say. There was no turning back now.

"I'm going to make sure Reuben pays for what he's done," I said, my voice steady but firm. "He hurt Emily, and that's something I'll never forgive. I'll make sure the twins are rescued. They've suffered enough. It's my responsibility, and I'll do everything in my power to make it right."

Caden turned from the window, his eyes flicking between Ronan and me, his brow furrowing as if weighing my words. But it wasn't his approval I needed right now. It was Ronan's.

Ronan leaned back in his chair, his fingers tapping lightly on the table. He was thinking, processing, weighing my words like they were a life-or-death decision. And, in many ways, they were.

"You're speaking as if you're already in this for the long haul," Ronan remarked, his voice low but thick with suspicion. "Do you truly understand the weight of what you're committing to, Ethan?"

I took a step closer to the table, feeling the gravity of the situation pressing on me, urging me to make my words count.

"I do," I replied without hesitation. "I understand better than most. You don't need to remind me what's at stake. But I'm not backing down. I can't. Not when it involves Emily and the twins." I paused, feeling my chest tighten. "And I won't let Reuben get away with what he's done."

Caden stepped forward then, a deep frown creasing his brow. His arms were crossed over his chest, his expression unreadable. "Reuben's not the only one you need to worry about. This isn't just about revenge. We need to get the twins back. That's the priority."

I nodded, looking at both of them. "I'm aware of that. But we can't just ignore what Reuben's done. He's part of the reason everything has gotten this far out of control. He's not just some erratic force-we need to deal with him."

Ronan stood from his seat, his chair scraping against the stone floor. He was imposing, his height alone enough to make anyone think twice before challenging him. The air between us crackled with a tension I couldn't ignore.

"I know how dangerous Reuben is," Ronan said slowly, his voice taking on a new, more serious tone. "But I also know how dangerous this situation is. You need to focus, Ethan. You're not just fighting for Emily. You're fighting for everything. This pack. Our legacy. It's not a fight you walk away from easily."

"I won't walk away," I said, my jaw clenched with determination. "I can't. Not with Emily carrying my child."

That caught their attention. Caden stiffened, his gaze sharp. Ronan's eyes flicked to mine, his expression unreadable for a moment. Then, something in his posture shifted, almost imperceptibly, as though my words had unlocked something.

"I know the responsibility that comes with this," I continued, my voice stronger now. "But I will protect Emily, the baby, and the twins. Whatever it takes."

Ronan was silent for a moment. It was as if he were weighing my words against everything he knew about me. Then, finally, he nodded slowly, a small gesture that felt like both an acknowledgment and a warning.

"I don't trust Reuben, and I don't trust you yet either, Ethan. But if you're serious about this, you'd better be ready for everything. This isn't some simple rescue mission. If you fail-if any of you fail-it'll be more than just your lives on the line."

"I'm ready," I said firmly. "And I won't fail."

Caden stepped forward, his eyes narrowing, a silent agreement passing between him and Ronan. He placed a hand on my shoulder, squeezing it once. "Then let's make sure we get it done," he said, his voice low, but tinged with something like resolve.

I nodded, feeling the weight of the responsibility I had just accepted, knowing full well there would be no going back. The journey ahead would be hard. There would be blood. There would be sacrifices. But if it meant bringing Reuben to justice, saving the twins, and protecting Emily and my unborn child... I would give everything.

"We move now," Ronan said, his voice cutting through the tension. "We don't wait any longer. We rescue the twins, and we end Reuben's reign of terror."

We all nodded in unison. The battle was just beginning, and we were about to face something that would change all of us forever.
