Chapter 50 A Dangerous Phone Call
Chapter 50 A Dangerous Phone Call
The alley suddenly fell silent. Carol's expression changed dramatically, and she quickly snatched the phone from Klein's hand, shouting into it.
"Jennifer, are you still there? Jennifer, can you hear me? It's Carol, answer me quickly."
Carol called out several times into the phone, but there was no response from the other end.
Anxious, Carol immediately turned to look at Klein.
"What the hell happened?"
"How should I know? Maybe she got drunk playing with a gun and accidentally shot her phone..."
Klein spread his hands, but couldn't finish his sentence. Obviously, this explanation was too far-fetched.
Clearly, Jennifer was in serious danger.
"We have to go save her!" Carol stared at Klein, her tone firm.
Even Carol herself hadn't noticed that whenever something happened, her first thought was never to call the police, but to turn to Klein for help. It seemed that, deep down, she had long considered him more reliable than the police.
But Klein was far calmer than Carol right now.
"Are you crazy? There were clearly gunshots over there. A cop is asking an ordinary citizen like me for help, and I'm supposed to rush over to save someone? You think this is a movie? Fast and Furious?"
Klein rolled his eyes and stood up from the ground.
"What you should be doing now is contacting her police chief father for help, not coming to me!"
"But Jennifer specifically called you for help..." Carol stamped her foot hard, glared at Klein, threw the phone back to him, and took out her own phone to call Kenneth.
Klein toyed with the phone in his hand, flipping it skillfully between his fingers, the bright screen reflecting his deeply thoughtful face.
The whole thing was strange from every angle. Given Jennifer's status, with her father holding such power in the police force and having so many connections, she shouldn't be asking him, an ordinary citizen, for help, no matter how skilled he was.
"Could it be that Jennifer and Kenneth don't get along, so she doesn't want to ask her father for help?"
Klein muttered to himself, then shook his head, dismissing the idea. From what he knew of Jennifer, though they hadn't known each other long, she would never be so impulsive.
Even if there were issues between father and daughter, it wouldn't make her completely distrust her own father.
"Could it be that the person hunting Jennifer is her father?"
Klein scratched his head, feeling this idea was even more absurd than the last one.
At this point, Carol had finished her call and walked over.
"What did Kenneth say?" Klein raised an eyebrow.
"He said he knows."
Carol's brow was still tightly furrowed.
"That's it? Nothing else?" Klein blinked, even doubting he'd heard correctly. Could the person hunting Jennifer really be her father?
"That one sentence is enough."
Carol let out a deep breath. "I could sense Kenneth's panic and rage suppressed to the extreme. When he's emotionally overwhelmed, he never likes to talk much."
Klein nodded, then pointed toward the alley entrance. "Let's go, we should head back."
Carol frowned, glaring at Klein. "Right now, we should go to the police station and wait for news about Jennifer."
Klein spread his hands. "We can certainly do that. But think carefully - what help could you possibly be there? Besides waiting anxiously at the station, you'd be completely useless, and you'd only make the police waste energy looking after you."
Klein's blunt words were particularly hurtful. Carol clenched her fists tightly. His mocking words only made her angrier.
But after a moment, she finally unclenched her fists, slumped her shoulders, and walked toward the alley entrance with her head down, saying nothing.
Klein was right - she really couldn't help at all and would only add to the police's burden.
The two walked out of the alley to find a car already waiting. While taking the subway earlier, Klein had already sent Will and the others a message with their location.
Paul was driving. He was about to greet Carol when he saw Klein standing behind her, making a shushing gesture.
Paul wisely shut his mouth. He could tell that Carol was in a terrible mood.
The car slowly pulled away. Carol sat alone in the back seat, arms crossed, staring out the window with a serious expression, saying nothing.
The atmosphere in the car was oppressive and stifling. Paul felt extremely uncomfortable and wanted to put on some music to ease the tension, but was afraid it would upset them even more.
After a long while, Klein suddenly spoke with a light sigh. "Alright, Carol, haven't you thought that Jennifer suddenly being in danger might be a trap set by the enemy, specifically to lure you out? If you rashly go to rescue her, you could easily fall into their ambush."
"I understand all that. I just feel terrible inside. I don't want people around me to get hurt because of me. Do you understand?"
Carol's voice was low and hoarse. She seemed to be thinking of many troubling matters, and tears began to well up in her eyes.
This left Klein momentarily speechless. He had only wanted to persuade Carol not to worry too much about Jennifer, since this matter had nothing to do with her, but he hadn't expected to touch on her sore spot.
Paul, who was driving, widened his eyes, clearly shocked by the news of Jennifer's danger.
"Ms. Hamilton is in trouble?"
Paul couldn't help but ask, but Klein glared at him fiercely.
"This isn't your concern. Just focus on driving back and doing your job protecting Carol."
Paul shrugged and obediently shut his mouth.
Carol suddenly came to her senses and turned to look at Klein, her eyes full of suspicion.
"You're looking at me like that - do you suspect I sent people to hunt Jennifer?" Klein rolled his eyes, his tone full of displeasure.
"I'm just curious why Jennifer called you for help specifically, instead of asking her father. What exactly is the relationship between you two?"
Carol's gaze locked tightly on Klein.
Klein felt unfairly accused - how could he possibly guess what Jennifer was thinking...
"Wait!"
Klein's eyes suddenly widened. He seemed to instantly understand what Jennifer meant.
