Chapter 108: Chapter 108
The morning light filtering into the pack house living room did nothing to dispel the lingering shadows of the night before. The heavy scent of vanilla and sugar was gone, replaced by the crisp, ordinary aroma of brewing coffee, sizzling bacon, and toasted bread. In the kitchen, Samantha moved with a hurried, mechanical efficiency, her hands trembling slightly as she set plates on the counter. She was trying desperately to force a routine onto a house that had been completely fractured.
Just outside the kitchen archway, Alpha Marcus sat at the head of the long oak dining table. He looked exhausted. The deep lines on his face seemed permanently etched into his skin, and his golden eyes, usually bright with fierce pack authority, were clouded and dull. Across from him sat Koda and Kai. The two brothers were silent, staring down at their clean plates as the heavy silence stretched between them.
Marcus cleared his throat, a rough, grating sound that drew his sons' eyes up. "So... have either of you seen him around lately? Since he... vanished last night?"
Kai shook his head, slumping back in his chair and running a hand over his face. "No. And honestly, Dad, I’m perfectly fine with that. If a demon wants to play hide-and-seek in the city instead of tearing our roof off, I say we let him play."
"We can't just let him roam freely, Kai," Marcus said, his voice dropping into a stern, defensive growl. "He bypassed every single perimeter rune we have. He walked into my home, assaulted Samantha, and threatened this entire bloodline. He is out for our blood. We need a strategy. We need to know how we are going to stay safe, because the moment he decides he is done playing games, we are the first targets."
Koda remained quiet, his fingers tracing a pattern on the wood of the table. He looked at his father—the man who had spent his entire life keeping secrets, the man who had looked at him with hidden fear for ten long years.
"I don't think he's just going to kill us for fun," Koda said quietly.
Marcus turned a sharp, questioning gaze toward his youngest son. "What did you say?"
"I said, I don't know why, but I feel like The One isn't mainly to be blamed for this," Koda said, his voice growing firmer as he looked his father dead in the eye.
Marcus blinked, completely shocked by the statement. His jaw tightened, a dangerous flush of anger creeping up his neck. "He is an ancient entity of destruction, Koda. He literally threatened to crush you and your brother. How can you sit there and defend him?"
"Because you heard what he said, Dad," Koda countered, his voice laced with a bitter, undeniable truth. He leaned forward, his fists clenching on the table. "You ruined his family. You took his life, you killed his mother, and then you trapped him inside me without my consent. You turned my childhood into a living cage for someone else's nightmare. What he’s doing right now... it’s not nice, but can you really blame him for being angry? You made him a prisoner before I was even old enough to walk."
Marcus opened his mouth, his chest heaving as he prepared to defend his actions, to explain the ancient pack laws and the sacrifices a true Alpha had to make to protect the territory. "Koda, you don't understand the burden of—"
"Breakfast is ready!" Samantha’s voice abruptly cut through the rising tension. She hurried out of the kitchen carrying a massive platter of eggs, bacon, and toast, her eyes darting nervously between Marcus and Koda. She desperately wanted to stop the conversation before it opened up wounds that could never heal. "Please, let's just eat. We all need our strength today."
At the top of the grand staircase, Harper paused. Her hand rested heavily on the wooden banister, her fingers still tingling slightly from the morning's chaotic encounter in the bathroom. She took a slow, deep breath, trying to smooth down the front of her school uniform and settle the frantic racing of her heart.
Before she stepped down, she instinctively glanced over her shoulder. The hallway behind her was empty, the morning sun painting the floorboards in bright, ordinary stripes of gold. There was no white hair, no freezing draft, and no sign of the entity who had spent the last several hours dismantling her reality. Yet, the phantom warmth of his touch still felt heavy under her skin, a constant, invisible tether that she couldn't shake off.
"Are you okay, dear?"
Harper flinched slightly, looking down to see Alpha Marcus standing at the bottom of the stairs, watching her with a look of deep, paternal concern.
She quickly forced a tight smile, nodding as she hurried down the steps. "Yeah. Yes, I'm fine. Just... tired."
"We all are," Marcus said softly, patting her shoulder as she reached the bottom. "Come sit. Eat something before school."
They all gathered around the table, the clinking of silverware against porcelain the only sound filling the room. Samantha sat beside Marcus, her eyes occasionally drifting to the faint red marks on her own neck, which she had carefully tried to hide beneath a high collar. Harper sat across from Koda and Kai, keeping her eyes fixed firmly on her plate, terrified that if she looked at anyone for too long, they would see the absolute chaos written all over her face.
"So," Samantha said, her voice forcedly bright as she looked around the table. "It's the first day back at normal school. If anyone wants to go with some food, I can easily pack up some lunches for you. Sandwiches, fruit, whatever you need."
"No, I'm good," Koda muttered, moving a piece of toast around his plate without actually eating it.
"Me too, Mom," Kai said with a weak attempt at a smile. "I'll just grab something with the guys later."
Samantha looked at Harper. "What about you, Harper?"
"I'll just buy from the cafeteria if I get hungry, mother," Harper said softly, offering a reassuring nod. "Don't worry about packing anything."
Samantha sighed, looking down at the table. "Alright. But... there are still some leftover cookies from yesterday. The ones that didn't... fall. If anyone wants a sweet snack for the bus ride..."
"I will take that, mother."
The temperature in the dining room plummeted to absolute zero in a single millisecond. The hot steam rising from the coffee mugs instantly vanished, turning into tiny white plumes of frozen breath.
With a soft, localized pop of air, The One suddenly materialized right at the center of the dining table. He was sitting cross-legged among the plates of bacon and eggs, perfectly balanced, completely unbothered by the sheer absurdity of his positioning. His stark white hair caught the morning light beautifully, and his dark jacket was perfectly pressed.
"Ah!" Samantha screamed, stumbling backward out of her chair, her hands flying to her chest.
Marcus, Koda, and Kai all violently flinched, their chairs scraping loudly against the hardwood floor as they leaped to their feet in perfect unison. Marcus’s claws instantly slid from his fingertips, his eyes flashing a dominant, aggressive gold as his alpha instincts roared into high gear. Kai and Koda dropped into defensive stances, their bodies tense, ready for a slaughter.
The only person who didn't move was Harper. She simply closed her eyes for a brief second, letting out a long, long sigh of pure, administrative exhaustion. She didn't even look surprised.
"Relax, everyone. Feel calm," The One said smoothly, his voice carrying that same melodic, chilling purr that filled every corner of the room. He reached out with two pale fingers, casually plucking a fresh strawberry from a fruit bowl in the center of the table and shoving it into his mouth. He chewed slowly, looking around at the aggressive stances of the werewolves with an expression of mild, patronizing amusement. "I am not here for destruction today. It is far too early in the morning for bloodshed."
Marcus was shaking with suppressed rage and fear, his chest heaving as he stared at the entity sitting on his breakfast. "Get off my table, demon. Get out of my house."
The One didn't even look at the Alpha. Instead, he uncurled his legs and slid off the table, landing on the floor with absolute, silent grace. He walked right past the tense, growling forms of Koda and Kai, stopping directly behind Harper’s chair.
Before Harper could even move, he reached down and patted her head lightly, his cold palm resting against her hair for a brief, incredibly possessive second. It was a gentle gesture, completely normal for a brother or a boyfriend, but in this room, it felt like a declaration of absolute territory.
"She said she would buy from the cafeteria," The One murmured, his dark eyes locking onto Samantha, who was still trembling by the kitchen archway. "But I think the cookies will do nicely for the walk."
Alpha Marcus watched the interaction, his golden eyes widening slightly as he registered the casual, completely unbothered way the entity touched Harper. He noticed how Harper didn't flinch away, how she didn't scream, how she simply tolerated the presence of a monster that had almost killed her mother the night before.
A sudden, sharp thought ignited in Marcus's desperate mind. The connection. The One had been locked inside Koda for a decade, but the second he came out, he had gravitated entirely toward Harper. He had spared Samantha because Harper begged him to. He was standing here right now, patting her head like a prized possession.
Maybe Harper is the key, Marcus thought, his mind racing through the ancient texts of binding and manipulation. The monster has a weakness. He has an anchor. If I can use Harper... if she can get close enough to him, she might be the one who will help me trap the monster back into a vessel. I just need to play this carefully.
The One turned away from Harper, smoothing down the front of his jacket as he glanced toward the front door. The heavy, freezing aura around him dialed back, returning to that low, subtle hum of power that Harper had felt on the camp path.
"Well," The One said, his voice bright and entirely too cheerful for the situation. "If we are done here, let's go to school. We wouldn't want to be late for our first day of higher education, would we?"
Koda and Kai stood up completely, their faces pale but resolute. They didn't look at their father, and they didn't look at the monster. They simply grabbed their backpacks from the foyer bench, their movements stiff and mechanical.
Harper stood up along with them, slinging her school bag over her shoulder. She looked at Samantha, giving her a small, reassuring nod that promised she would stay safe, even though she knew it was a promise she couldn't keep.
As the three teenagers moved toward the heavy oak front door, The One walked a few paces behind them, his stride effortless and fluid. But just before his hand touched the iron handle, he paused.
He slowly turned his head, looking back across the grand living room at Alpha Marcus, who was still standing by the dining table, his claws slowly retracting back into his skin.
The One’s sharp features twisted into a wide, wicked smirk. It was a look of pure, unadulterated superiority, a silent message that said I know exactly what you are thinking, old man, and I dare you to try.
Without a word, the entity turned and left the house, stepping out into the warm summer morning alongside Harper, Koda, and Kai.
The heavy front door clicked shut behind them, leaving Alpha Marcus alone in the silent foyer. The Alpha sank slowly back into his chair, his hands trembling against the polished wood of the table. He looked at the half-eaten strawberry top left on his plate, a cold resolve settling deep within his chest. The game was no longer about borders or pack politics; it was about survival. And whether Harper liked it or not, she was now the center of the battlefield.
