Chapter 195 : The Future Was Ours.
Chapter 195 : The Future Was Ours.
STEPHEN’S POV
The deafening roar of sixty thousand people vibrating through the stadium turf wasn't just noise… it was a physical force slamming into my chest.
The bright, blinding stadium lights cut through the humid evening air, reflecting off the pristine green grass of the United FC home stadium.
It was the forty-fourth minute of our very first professional match.
The scoreboard overhead read 0-0 against our fiercest conference rivals, the clock ticking down mercilessly toward halftime.
The tension in the stadium was taut as a wire, the fans screaming for blood, for a breakthrough, for a sign that the millions of dollars Vanguard had dropped on us wasn't just hype.
My lungs were burning, my jersey soaked through with sweat as I marked my run down the left flank.
The opposing center-back was tight on me, his shoulder digging into my ribs, trying to crowd my space and cut off my passing lanes.
Then, across the pitch, my eyes locked onto the number nine jersey.
It was Hayden.
He had dropped deep into the midfield to collect a loose, bouncing ball, his massive frame shielding it perfectly from two recovering defenders.
He didn't even look up at me. He didn't fucking need to. That telepathic, unyielding chemistry we had forged in the mud of our past was already pulling the strings.
With a brutal drop of his shoulder that sent his marker flying the wrong way, Hayden unleashed an absolute rocket of an assist.
The ball clipped the grass, spinning with a lethal, curving trajectory that sliced directly through the entire defensive line, landing precisely two inches in front of my sprinting boot.
It was perfect. It was art.
I didn't hesitate as I drove my foot into the leather, striking it for the first time with everything I had left in my body.
The ball screamed past the goalkeeper’s outstretched fingers, violently ripping into the top right corner of the net.
Goal!!!
For a split second, the world fell dead silent. Then, the entire stadium fucking erupted.
The stadium announcer’s voice boomed through the speakers, barely audible over the thunderous, earth-shattering wall of sound coming from the stands.
Sixty thousand people jumped to their feet, the collective wave of energy rattling the concrete beneath my boots.
But they weren't just cheering for a goal.
They were chanting.
"HAYDEN! STEPHEN! HAYDEN! STEPHEN!"
The sound of our names being yelled in unison, twisted together by thousands of adoring voices, hit me like a physical blow.
My knees felt dangerously weak as I stood near the corner flag, my chest heaving as the sheer magnitude of the moment threatened to completely break me down.
I remembered the cold, suffocating terror of the morning the tape was leaked.
I remembered the vile, degrading comments flashing across my screen, strangers picking apart our private intimacy as if we were nothing but a public joke.
I remembered the suffocating weight of thinking our dreams were dead, that the sport we sacrificed our childhoods for would cast us out into the dirt because of who we loved.
And now? They were screaming for us. They were celebrating our love, our partnership, our victory. The purity of the validation was so intense that tears hot and unbidden began to track through the sweat and dirt on my cheeks.
I was completely overwhelmed, a sob catching in my throat as the sheer emotional weight of our survival threatened to bring me to my knees.
Suddenly, a heavyweight crashed into me. Hayden’s powerful arms wrapped around my waist, pulling me hard against his chest, his face buried into the crook of my neck as the rest of our teammates swarmed us, slapping our backs and shouting in celebration.
When the team finally pulled away to head back to our half for the final seconds of the half, Hayden didn't let go of my hand. His grip was firm, grounding me, his dark eyes burning with a fierce, triumphant heat that effectively incinerated every lingering ghost of our past nightmare.
"Hey," Hayden breathed, his voice rough and thick as he used his thumb to wipe a stray tear from my eye. "What did I tell you? The future is ours, Steph."
Before I could even choke out a reply, Hayden took a step back.
The stadium was still buzzing, the fans still chanting our names, but the entire world seemed to stop moving the moment Hayden slowly dropped down onto one knee right there on the grass, directly in front of the home crowd, the cameras, and the millions watching at home.
My breath hitched instantly in my throat, my heart hammering a frantic, dizzying rhythm against my ribs.
"Hayden," I gasped, my hands flying to my mouth. "What the fuck are you doing?"
He didn't care about the protocol. He didn't give a fuck about the halftime whistle that was about to blow. He reached into his sports wrap, pulling out a sleek, heavy platinum band that caught the brilliant glare of the stadium lights.
"I told you nobody was taking this away from us," Hayden said, his voice dropping into that rough, gravelly register that always made my chest ache, echoing clearly despite the noise around us. "We survived the worst thing they could throw at us, Steph. I don't want another day, another match, or another second of my life without you as my husband. Marry me, Stephen."
The stadium screen flashed his face, and the entire crowd realized what was happening at the same moment.
A massive, collective gasp echoed through the stands, followed by an absolute explosion of unhinged, wild cheering.
Tears were streaming down my face now, completely blurring my vision.
The shadows were gone, and the man who had stood by me through the darkest abyss of my life was looking up at me with nothing but unconditional devotion.
"Yes," I choked out, the word tearing out of my throat, raw and undone. "Yes, you idiot, a thousand times yes!"
Hayden let out a breathless, triumphant laugh, sliding the heavy band onto my finger before surging upward. He grabbed my waist, lifting me completely off the pitch, and slammed his mouth onto mine.
It was a hard, possessive, unyielding kiss that tasted like salt, sweat, and absolute victory.
Around us, sixty thousand people went completely feral, their screams shaking the foundations of the stadium.
We had forced our way through the mud, relying entirely on our grit, our undeniable talent, and our fierce, unyielding love for one another.
The world had no choice but to look past the smoke and recognize the fire.
The future was ours.
