Chapter 106: My Rebellious Luna
MATT POV
15 MIN EARLIER
I can’t help but wonder when they will realize they need codes for the doors. Will Becky give them the codes in exchange for her parents? Or her pup? I’m going crazy trying to figure out how to stop things from getting worse.
Suddenly, something caught my eye in the window. It’s Jerry, he’s signaling to Becky’s parents. Ducking every time a warrior makes his rounds and looks in his direction. The silver weakens and confines us but it doesn’t stop us from mind-linking. “Chris. Get Becky’s father's attention.” Chris scoots slightly and his foot bumps his foot, making him startle.
He looks up and Chris motions at me. The fact that I’m tied up doesn’t inspire any trust from him by the look he’s giving me. I discreetly signaled towards the window with my eyes. He slowly turns and kisses his wife on the head, watching the warrior closest to him. When he sees no one is looking, he looks out the window. Jerry pops us and does some hand signals.
Becky’s father looks unwilling to do whatever Jerry is suggesting. He looks at his wife and then back at me. His eyes briefly landed on the gloves the warriors dropped on the chair when they got us all settled. They used them to protect their hands while they chained us. He looks back up at the window where Jerry signals him some more.
I began to wonder if Becky’s father was in the military too. He seemed to understand exactly what Jerry was saying. He doesn’t look convinced, but he understands. He whispers something to Becky’s mother, luckily the warrior that’s passing isn’t close enough to hear him. A loud thump from upstairs causes us all to worry about our Luna. Suddenly, Becky’s mother cries out and clutches her chest. “Help! Help!” He screamed, getting the attention of one of the warriors.
“What’s wrong with her?” The warrior asks, keeping his distance. “She hasn’t taken her pills for her heart, she needs water and something with antioxidants… berries!.” She sobs uncontrollably and looks up at the warrior. I doubt he’s moved but he appears annoyed. “Fine. Stay right there, I’ll be back.” He walks away, letting the other warriors know where he is going.
That gives Becky’s father a chance to remove the clevis hook that’s holding the chains around Chris and four other warriors in place. Chris does his best to hold them in place when the warrior returns with the water and berries. “Can I please lay here over there? She’s scared of all these men.” He gestured at us. “Yeah, just stay on the floor.” He orders.
They begin to scoot slowly down closer to the gloves. On their way, I can see Becky’s mother is unhooking more of the clevis hooks when the warriors aren’t looking. “Hold them.” I link the warriors that are being freed. There are about six groups of five warriors that are holding their positions. There are still seventy warriors chained up in groups of five.
There is a roar that comes from upstairs and a sense of urgency rises in every single one of us. All I can do is hope my Luna knows how to handle Alpha Adam. I don’t sense she is in pain or discomfort and that allows me to focus on the matter at hand. Jerry seemed to have a plan but I had no idea what it was.
I wish he was a wolf so that we could mind link. Or he could have taught me whatever signs he and Becky’s father are communicating with. A few minutes passed by and I noticed her father was still watching, waiting for an opening. Five warriors begin to make their way out the back of the pack house. The others do their best to keep their rotation tight.
I catch Becky’s scent getting closer but then it begins to fade, probably going out the back as well. Something is happening and we need to act now. The five warriors remaining can’t watch one hundred wolves. Becky’s father grabs the gloves and gives one to the warrior closest to him and throws one behind Chris.
The sound of the glove scrapping on the floor gets one of the warriors' attention. “Ay!!” Becky’s mother wails and thrashes on the floor. The warriors go back to their rotation and ignore her. I’m still trying to figure out what Jerry’s plan is. There is no way two of my warriors can set everyone free without being seen. That would put her parents at risk. Becky’s father coughs loudly, getting our attention, and signals five to us. Five minutes?
I was hoping that’s what he meant, but I kept my eyes on him to make sure. Like clockwork, his next hand signal is four. He’s counting down, to what? Soon three and two follow, then one. Five minutes never felt so long in my life. Before he can signal zero, an explosion erupts in front of the pack house. The warriors in the dining hall don’t leave but are discussing what happened and looking out the window.
Becky’s mother begins to sob, scared from the explosion. That’s when I noticed Jerry slipping in from one of the windows. He manages to unhook three more groups before making his way to Becky’s parents. “NOW!” I mind link the warriors that are unhooked. The chains are dropped, gaining the attention of the Dark Shadows warriors.
Chris and the other warrior quickly unhook the remaining two groups. One group stands in front of Becky’s parents and Jerry to protect them. The Dark Shadows warriors attack the closest group of warriors next to them. I pray no one shifts. I don’t need Becky’s mother having a real heart attack. Before we can figure out our next steps, thirty more Dark Shadows warriors arrive.
By my count, they only have thirty warriors guarding the perimeter and Luke should be here soon. I need to get Becky’s parents to the bunker and find my Luna. “You five, come with me and Jerry. Protect them at all costs.” I point at Becky’s parents and the five warriors surrounding them nod. “Yes, Gamma!” Jerry puts his hand behind his uncle and aunt and begins to lead them with us.
I’m glad the fight started in the dining hall, less likely for anyone to shift. If I can get Becky’s parents into the bunker now, we can avoid that from ever happening. It seems Jerry wants the same thing because he does his best to stop them from turning around. “They are fifteen minutes away!” Jerry announces. Thank Goddess. Now I need to find Becky.
