Chapter 100: 100 - BROKEN PROMISES

EMILY.

I was afraid, more afraid than ever. Kevin was so unpredictable. He proved to be more dangerous than anyone else. He came back from the dead and was ready to destroy us all. I didn’t know what would happen to me there.

In the end, it didn’t matter what happened to me. All I cared about was the safety of the people I loved. He promised Mike’s release if I stood by him. I wanted peace for everyone. My life was meaningless without Mike.

The closer I got to the meeting place, the harder my heart pounded. I could feel it not in my chest where it belonged, but it was rising into my throat in a big, painful lump that was sapping my strength.

In front of Menfail Park, a black car with tinted windows waited for me, just as the message had said. I looked around before opening the back door and seeing that there were no familiar eyes, I quickly got in.

To my surprise, there was only a driver in the car who didn’t even say hello. As soon as I got in, I got another text message:

“This phone will no longer be of any use to you. In the next five seconds, the window on your door will open and you will throw it away.”

I looked over at the driver, who was staring at me in the rearview mirror. He was waiting to throw the phone before starting the car. His gaze was hard, cold. It scared me. I couldn’t read anything in his face, so I complied. After all, I didn’t need that phone. I wasn’t answering it, anyway. The only thing it would help me with would be the memories that were in it, but the most important memories were in my heart, and from there, no one could banish them.

The second I dropped the phone, the car drove away. Slowly and slowly we picked up speed, to my despair. We were heading toward my future dungeon with hurried steps. I was trying to realize in my mind that fate had simply been hard on me and considered my sacrifice necessary for the happiness of my loved ones.

I was thinking about my dad with whom I had just had a wonderful relationship, Olivia, my mom or Gaby and my dear Mike. He was worth my sacrifice! They all were!

I was glad to have known paternal love, but also true love that came straight from the heart. I was proud that I had learned what it meant to be important to someone or what it meant to be loved for who I was, for better or worse, and most of all that I had reached the highest star.

As I had dreamed as a child, I became a beloved and sought-after writer. That my last book was my most-read book meant the world to me. I had a lot of things that filled my heart with joy and admiration, things that I kept in my heart.

With my mind in joyful places, I didn’t feel my way and found myself in front of a simple house. It looked nothing like the one Kevin and I had bought for our married life and that I had heard he was used to. It was a place that inspired hardness, coldness, fear. I didn’t feel from that place the warmth of the home that I had been used to lately.

A huge, muscular man with a look like an executioner opened my door. No thought would have dared to have resisted him. I was ready for anything.

He led me inside the house. Usually, I would have studied every nook and cranny, but at that moment, the only thing I wanted to study was Kevin’s face. I thought reading his expression would help me find out what he wanted from me.

I entered a room that was neither too big nor too small, but very elegant. Kevin was sitting in an armchair in front of a coffee table. He was holding a half-full glass and on the coffee table was a bottle of fine cognac.

“Look who’s here, my lovely wife. Welcome, BABY!” His tone was so harsh and cold that I felt my heart freeze on the spot. “I missed you so much. Didn’t you?”

“Uh..” I could not speak. The words were stuck in my throat.

“O! Don’t bother to explain, my dear. I know you’ve been busy, and that you’ve had some ... peculiar company, shall we say?”

His expression was merciless. I had met so many people before that moment, but such a cruel look I had never seen. His arched eyebrows came together above eyes that were red with fury, ready to pierce me at any moment. His taut cheeks reinforced the fear that had already taken hold of my body.

“How awesome was it to fuck my idiot brother?” It was an ironic question.

“Kevin, I...” I swallowed my words the moment Kevin thumped his glass against the wall. I winced and took a few steps back.

“Are you afraid? You don’t have the guts to face me because you’re alone? How naïve.”

“Kevin, enough, please. I’m here now.” I told him in a voice almost lost. “Cut Mike loose, please. Where is he? You promised,” I said desperately.

“How naïve and stupid you are. Did you really believe me?” he said, laughing.

“I did what you wanted. I’m in front of you now. What’s the point of your attitude?”

“What’s the point?” he yelled at me. “It makes more sense than you realize. You were the only woman who ever humiliated me like that.”

“Kevin, you’ve never loved me. Why are we even bothering?”

“I don’t love you!” He burst out laughing. It was a perverted, evil laugh. “I don’t love anyone, my dear. Love is not for me. I have whoever I want by my side, and they don’t betray me like you did. Whoever does that pays dearly.”

“You betrayed me!” I yelled at him.

He got up from behind the armchair and came to my side. He gripped my wrist, tightly, at which point panic reached alarming heights. My body shook. My legs felt increasingly shaky, ready to give out at any moment.

“I do what I want and you, like a good wife, do only what I say. If you did that from the beginning, everything would be wonderful for you now. You’d stay at home and I’d have fun and work, after which I’d come back to you,” he said in a calm but harsh tone.

“Let me go!”

That was all I could say. Frankly, I was too scared to open my mouth. Anger and alcohol seemed to have stolen his mind. There was also the possibility that he was the real Kevin, not the one I married.

“You’re too naïve for me to bother hurting you physically. Don’t worry. You slipped through the cracks last time and I have no regrets. Both you and your fool lover will pay, but first I’m going to have a little fun. He doesn’t have much life left, anyway. Then you’re next.”

“NO! You promised to leave them alone if I came to you. I kept my word. Now it’s your turn.”

“Huh! Did you really believe me? How can you think I can forgive the one who betrayed me? Or how can I forgive your idiot sister who ruined my most important business? NEVER!”

I felt his words like a venomous dart plunging into my heart. I could only wonder what he had in mind and what revenge plan he had in mind.
