Chapter 134: THE DARKNESS THAT WE AWAKENED
The darkness swallowed everything.
Not like night, not like shadow—this was deeper. Thicker. A void that had weight. It pressed against my skin, against my lungs, as if trying to crush the air out of me.
I reached for Asher instinctively.
My hand found his.
Warm. Alive.
Trembling.
“Luna?” His voice was raw, echoing strangely in the dark. “Are you here?”
“Yes.” I gripped him harder. “I’m here.”
We couldn’t see each other, but I felt him step in front of me anyway, shielding me with his body even though we both knew the darkness could swallow us whole.
The curse’s voice curled through the void.
“Together… you amplify.
Together… you become.”
I felt Asher tense, muscles coiling like a trapped beast. “Show yourself,” he snarled into the black.
The curse didn’t show itself.
It wrapped around us instead.
A cold wind swirled in a tightening circle, lifting strands of my hair, tugging at Asher’s clothes. The darkness lit faintly around its edges, like embers glowing inside smoke.
Then—hands.
Shadow-born, clawed hands stretching out from the void, reaching for our chests as if to rip out what lay beneath.
Asher moved instantly, shifting partially—eyes glowing fierce, claws bursting through skin, fangs lengthening. He slashed at the hands, tearing them into shreds of black fog that dissolved into nothing.
But more formed.
Dozens.
Hundreds.
Each whispering the same word:
“Submit…”
I raised my wrist—the mark burning like molten metal under my skin.
“Asher,” I breathed. “Hold on to me.”
“I’m not letting go.” His hand wrapped around my waist, anchoring me.
The darkness pulsed.
A heartbeat not our own.
BOOM.
BOOM.
BOOM.
Every pulse dragged us deeper into the void, pulling at our souls like a tide determined to drown us.
“Asher,” I whispered, panic creeping into my voice, “it’s trying to separate us.”
“I know.” His grip tightened painfully. “Don’t let go.”
I wouldn’t.
I couldn’t.
I intertwined my fingers with his, holding on with everything I had.
But the darkness didn’t need to rip us apart physically.
It used something worse.
Asher gasped suddenly, one hand flying to his head. “No—no—don’t—”
“Asher?!” I grabbed his face. “What’s happening?!”
He shook violently, eyes rolling back. “It’s—showing me things.”
“What things?”
His voice cracked. “You. Dying.”
My breath froze.
The void hissed, delighted.
Images slammed into me too—horrible flashes of Asher falling to his knees, corruption crawling up his throat, his eyes going empty. A future where he never came back. A future where I wasn’t fast enough to save him.
A future where the curse won.
“No,” I whispered fiercely. “These aren’t real.”
But the images kept coming.
Asher screaming.
Asher breaking.
Asher fading.
I reached for him, cupping his cheeks, forcing him to focus on me. “Look at me. Listen to my voice.”
His whole body trembled. “Luna—make it stop—please—”
Hearing him beg shattered something inside me.
I pressed my forehead to his. “You’re here. You’re alive. I’ve got you.”
He clutched my arms like I was the only thing keeping him anchored. “Don’t leave me. Luna, don’t—”
“I’m not going anywhere,” I whispered, voice shaking. “I swear.”
The curse hissed louder, the whispers slithering across our skin.
“Promises… break…
Souls… bend…
He will fall.
So will you.”
Asher roared at the darkness, wolf and man merging in his fury. “GET OUT OF OUR HEADS!”
Light burst from his body—red, raw, violent.
The darkness recoiled, screaming.
My mark reacted instantly—flaring gold-white, merging with his crimson light until the void around us cracked like shattered glass.
The curse shrieked, furious.
“It isn’t enough,” Asher gasped, breath ragged. “Luna—I need you. Add your strength to mine.”
I nodded without hesitation.
I grabbed both sides of his face, pulling him into a kiss.
Not gentle.
Not soft.
Desperate.
Raw.
Our marks exploded with energy the moment our lips met—heat flooding through us, binding our souls tighter, intertwining light and fire and pain and love into something unstoppable.
The void trembled violently.
The shadows shrieked and recoiled.
Our magic—our bond—burned through the darkness like a blade of living fire.
The curse’s voice turned shrill.
“NOT THIS!
NOT BOTH OF YOU!”
Too late.
The light from our marks erupted outward in a massive shockwave, shredding the void, tearing cracks of light through the black. The ground—if there even was ground—shook violently.
And then—
Everything collapsed.
Light swallowed the world.
The scream of the curse was ripped away—
And my body slammed into something solid.
Grass.
Earth.
The forest.
I gasped, sucking in real air as the darkness dissipated.
“Asher?” I coughed, scrambling up.
He was on his hands and knees a few feet away, chest heaving, sweat dripping from his jaw. The curse’s marks along his neck were dimmer—faded.
Barely there.
I stumbled to him, falling to my knees. “Asher—Asher, look at me.”
He lifted his head.
And I froze.
His eyes were no longer crimson.
They weren’t black.
They glowed with a radiant, terrifying, beautiful gold.
Not moon-gold.
Not wolf-gold.
Something older.
Something awakened.
His voice was barely human when he whispered:
“Luna…
I think we woke something inside me.”
