Chapter 102: The Price of Truth

Morwen’s warning wasn’t a prediction of a future challenge; it was an assessment of our current problems. The secret I noticed flicker in Adrian’s eyes was a small crack in our bond. I realized with a frightening certainty that if we didn’t address it now, our entire relationship would collapse when we needed it most. We had just learned that we were fighting for the survival of the world, but now, the most crucial battle was between the two of us.

The walk from the Heartwood grove to the ancient cottage where Morwen lived was the longest, quietest journey of my life. The air, once alive with magic, now felt heavy with unspoken thoughts. Sofia and the twins walked respectfully behind us, their faces showing confusion and worry. They could sense the shift, the sudden chill that had opened up between their Alpha and his mate.

Adrian wouldn’t look at me. He kept his gaze straight ahead, his jaw set firmly, while I sensed the storm of his inner conflict through our bond. He was shutting me out, trying to protect the very secret that could destroy us.

When we reached the moss-covered cottage, Morwen motioned for us to enter. “You must rest,” she said, her knowing eyes revealing more than she let on. “The journey to the Whispering Peaks is long, and your enemies are already moving.”

But I knew I couldn’t rest. Not like this. As the others entered, I grabbed Adrian’s arm, my grip surprisingly strong. “No,” I said, my voice low and trembling with an unidentifiable emotion. “Not until you tell me.”

He finally turned to face me, and the pain in his eyes felt like a physical hit. “Ethan, don’t,” he whispered, his voice pleading.

“Don’t what? Don’t ask for the truth?” I shot back, my voice rising. “Morwen just told us! No secrets! No lies between us! Our bond, the one thing that has gotten us through all of this, holds the key to the next trial. And you are standing here, lying to my face!”

“I am not lying!” he growled, frustration boiling over. “I’m protecting you! There are things you aren’t ready to know!”

“That’s not your choice anymore!” I cried, my pain finally breaking free. “I’ve faced monsters, Elders, and ancient spirits! I have been hunted, poisoned, and had the memories of my dead grandmother forced into my soul! What could be worse than that? What are you hiding from me that is so terrible you would risk our entire mission, our world, to keep it secret?”

He stared at me, his face twisted in torment, caught between his duty to protect me and his duty to trust me. With a choked breath, he finally gave in.

“When I pulled the silver from you,” he began, his voice a hoarse whisper, “our bond… it was wide open. I was in your soul, and you were in mine. And I felt it.” He stepped closer, searching my face, as if afraid his next words would break me.

“Underneath the rhythm of your heart,” he said, his voice dropping so low I could barely hear him, “I felt another one. A second heartbeat. Faint. Slow. Sleeping. But it was there.” He took my hand and placed it on my chest. “It was the quiet, sleeping heart of a wolf.”

The world shifted. The birds in the ancient trees fell silent. My own blood turned to ice. A wolf. Inside me.

“When?” I gasped.

“I don’t know,” he admitted, his face filled with confusion and fear. “I think… I think the ritual didn’t just transfer the poison. It was an exchange. To save you, I had to pour my own life force, my Alpha essence, into you. I think part of my wolf stayed behind.”

The horrifying truth washed over me. The ritual had saved my life, but it had changed me forever. I wasn’t just a human with a magical bloodline anymore. I was something new. Something different. A hybrid. An impossibility.

I stumbled back, my mind spinning, a thousand questions demanding answers. Was it growing? Would it take control? Was this why the magic felt so chaotic inside me?

Adrian reached for me, desperation etched on his face. “I didn’t tell you because I didn’t want to give you another monster to fight,” he whispered, his voice breaking. “Especially not one that lives inside you. I’m so sorry, Ethan.”

I looked at him, at the pain on his face, and my own fear faded under a wave of pure love. He hadn’t kept the secret to deceive me. He had done it to protect me. It was the wrong choice, but it came from the right place.

I stepped closer, pulling him into a tight embrace. “You’re an idiot,” I whispered into his shoulder. “A brave, foolish, honorable idiot.”

We stood there for a long moment, holding each other, the terrible secret now laid bare between us. It wasn’t a wall anymore but a shared burden. A new, frightening mystery we would face together.

We had survived our first test for the Whispering Peaks. We chose the difficult path of truth over the easier one of protection. But as we finally broke apart, a cold reality set in.

The creatures of The Withering were hunting the magic of the Moon Dancers. I now had the heart of a wolf beating inside me. I was no longer just the beacon. I was prey.

My scent had become twice as strong and twice as tempting to the monsters crawling across the world to find us.
