Chapter 6
After getting in the car, we chatted intermittently.
"Since Mr. Williams and Elizabeth divorced, how many years has it been since we last met?" he asked with a bright smile, looking into my eyes and thoughtfully pulling down the sun visor for me.
"It has indeed been many years. When did you return to the country?"
"I heard about the Shen family's daughter's wedding recently and rushed back from abroad. I thought it was you," he replied.
I didn't think much of it and simply explained, "It's my stepsister, the one you asked to replace today. But she doesn't know my identity."
I then briefly explained our relationship and my ex-boyfriend's affair and marriage.
He was so angry that he wanted to go beat up Jasper, but I stopped him.
Kenneth was still as protective of me as he was when we were kids.
After exchanging a few more pleasantries, we went back.
The next day at work, everyone looked at me strangely.
As I walked into the office, I heard people whispering about me.
"Just started working here, no idea about her capabilities, but she sure knows how to use her charms. Yesterday she even got Mr. Williams to invite her to dinner!"
"Mr. Williams specifically asked her to present that proposal too!"
"She's here to snag a rich husband; what do you know?" Laura chimed in.
So they were gossiping about me.
I didn't pay it any mind and went to the break room to make myself a cup of coffee, only to run into that disgusting Jasper again.
His brows furrowed as he blocked my way and questioned, "Bella! I've heard all about your antics. When did you become so vain? I must have misjudged you before."
"Even though I wronged you, I had my reasons. Is it necessary for you to find a man just to spite me?"
He acted like I had betrayed him, as if I were the one being unfaithful.
"Are you out of your mind? You're just insulting yourself."
I sidestepped him with an annoyed look and said impatiently, "What does it matter to you what I do? Don't forget we broke up!"
Jasper wouldn't let go, acting as if he couldn't understand human language: "Let's just forget this time. I know women sometimes throw little tantrums, but don't push your luck. Besides, I never said I stopped loving you. You can't keep doing this."
He leaned in closer.
"But how did you get acquainted with someone as important as Mr. Williams?"
I couldn't help but laugh out loud in anger:
"You really wear your love for money on your face. If you're that short on cash, should I burn some for you?"
"If you're sick, go see a doctor. I'm not a psychiatrist."
In the end, I got so angry that I kicked him away.
When I returned, a photo suddenly exploded in our usually quiet work group chat.
It was a candid shot of Jasper and me talking in the break room.
The photo was quickly retracted, but it was during downtime, so everyone saw it.
It caused an immediate uproar; everyone in the company knew Jasper and Laura were married.
Laura stormed over angrily and gave me a hard shove; the next second she was about to slap me across the face.
I caught her wrist just in time to avoid being hit.
