Chapter 38: The Hollow’s Heart
Chapter 38: The Hollow’s Heart
The ground trembled again, but this time, the energy began to dissipate, the shadows retreating back into the trees. Clara could feel it—the Hollow’s presence weakening, its hold loosening. It wasn’t gone, but it was no longer in control. Not entirely.
She stood there for a long moment, her breath steadying as she took in the peaceful silence around her. The Hollow had been a part of her life for so long, but it was finally starting to release its grip. And for the first time in a long while, Clara felt like she might be able to breathe again.
Clara made her way back to Black Hollow, her heart lighter than it had been in weeks. She wasn’t done with the Hollow yet, but she knew now that it didn’t own her. Not anymore.
The curse may never fully disappear, but she had taken the first step toward breaking its hold for good.
When she returned to town, Liam was waiting for her, his eyes filled with concern. But when he saw the resolve in her face, the weight that had been on her shoulders lifting, he smiled.
“You okay?” he asked quietly.
Clara nodded. “I think I’m finally starting to be.”
And for the first time, Clara believed it.
The full moon loomed large in the sky, its silver light spilling through the trees, casting long shadows over Black Hollow. The town was quiet, too quiet for Clara’s liking. It felt like the calm before the storm, an eerie stillness that made her skin crawl.
Liam stood beside her, his expression a mixture of concern and curiosity. He could feel it too. Something was coming, something darker than anything they’d faced before. Clara had been restless for days, ever since she had uncovered the forgotten altar deep in the woods. The Hollow had been speaking to her again, its voice like a whisper in the back of her mind.
“You think it’s going to strike tonight?” Liam asked, his eyes scanning the horizon as they stood near the town’s edge.
“I don’t know,” Clara said, her voice tight with uncertainty. “But I feel it. It’s closer now. The Hollow… it’s waking up.”
She could still feel the weight of the land pressing down on her, like an invisible hand grasping at her heart. The ancient power that had once been tied to the wolves, to the curse, was still lingering in the town, in the woods. The land had always been alive with magic, with secrets buried deep beneath the earth, and it was calling to her again.
“I thought we killed it,” Liam said, his voice barely above a whisper. “I thought it was over.”
Clara shook her head. “We might have broken its hold on the curse, but the Hollow itself… it’s more than just a creature. It’s a force, tied to the land. As long as Black Hollow exists, it will always be here, waiting.”
She took a deep breath, trying to steady her nerves. Her thoughts were racing, and she couldn’t seem to quiet them. The last time she had ventured into the woods, to the altar, she had felt something stir beneath her feet something ancient and powerful. The land itself was waking up, and Clara couldn’t shake the feeling that the Hollow wasn’t finished with her yet.
“You’ve been down to the river’s edge a lot lately,” Liam observed, his gaze flicking to her. “What are you looking for?”
Clara didn’t answer immediately. She wasn’t sure herself. She had been drawn to the river, to the place where the final battle had taken place, and every time she went there, she felt the Hollow’s pull, felt it seeping into her bones. It was like a song, haunting and seductive, and every time she got closer, the whispers grew louder.
“I think I’m trying to find a way to finish this for good,” she finally said, her voice tinged with determination. “I’ve been feeling like there’s something we missed. A piece of the puzzle we didn’t see.”
Liam watched her, his brow furrowing. “Are you sure you’re ready to face it again?”
“I have to,” Clara replied, her voice firm. “We can’t keep living like this, always waiting for the next attack. We need to find the heart of the Hollow and destroy it. Once and for all.”
They both turned toward the woods, the dark trees stretching out before them like a living maze. The wind picked up, rustling the leaves, and Clara could feel the temperature drop. She wasn’t sure what they were walking into, but she knew they couldn’t wait any longer.
The two of them made their way into the woods, following the same path they had taken before, but this time, Clara felt a palpable shift in the air. The trees seemed to close in around them, the branches twisting and turning as if they were alive. The very earth beneath their feet seemed to hum with energy.
“This doesn’t feel right,” Liam muttered, glancing around.
Clara nodded, her senses heightened. “It’s close. I can feel it.”
They continued deeper into the woods, their pace quickening as the pull grew stronger. Soon, they arrived at the river’s edge, the water flowing swiftly beneath the bridge that led to the abandoned stone circle. But there was something different about the place tonight. The moonlight bathed the area in an eerie glow, and the shadows seemed to shift and move, as if the trees themselves were watching them.
“This is it,” Clara whispered, her voice thick with both fear and anticipation.
They crossed the bridge, and Clara’s gaze fell on the stone circle ahead. The remnants of the Hollow’s curse were still there, the shattered pieces of the stones half-buried in the earth. The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and decaying leaves, and Clara could hear the faintest hum of energy like a low, distant growl vibrating through the ground.
“I think it’s time,” Clara said, pulling her crossbow from her back. “Stay close.”
Liam nodded, drawing his own blade, his muscles tense and ready. Together, they approached the stone circle, their steps careful, measured. The moonlight seemed to grow brighter as they neared the heart of the Hollow, and Clara felt a surge of power rush through her. The land was alive beneath her feet, like it was trying to speak to her.
She closed her eyes, focusing on the hum beneath her, and then it hit her a flood of visions, of memories, of voices. The Hollow was speaking, its whispers echoing in her mind, each one a part of something larger, something older than Black Hollow itself.
The Hollow is mine, the voice said, its tone low and threatening. You cannot destroy me. I was born here, and I will die here. You can no more sever me from this place than you can sever the earth from the sky.
Clara’s breath hitched. The power, the presence it was overwhelming. But she wouldn’t back down. Not now. She had come too far to turn back.
“No,” Clara said, her voice steady despite the overwhelming force. “I’ve already broken your chains. I’m not afraid of you anymore.”
The voice snarled, the ground beneath them shaking with rage. The stones of the circle seemed to pulse, glowing with an unnatural light, as if the land itself was coming to life.
Clara stepped forward, her hands trembling but determined. She had to end this—once and for all. She raised her hand, palm out, and drew a rune in the air. The symbols glowed with a fierce light, and for a moment, the world seemed to hold its breath.
