Chapter 99

Chapter 99

Evie

Kieran gave one last glare at everyone in the room before turning his gaze to Ethan, who didn't even want to keep eye contact with him as he turned his gaze away.

He swallowed hard, lifting his gaze up to Arthur as he said, “I'll be back, and this time I'll be prepared,” he announced before stepping out of the room and following the back route.

I heaved a deep sigh the minute he left, pulling Ethan close to me as I stared at Arthur.

“Go get dressed and join Lucian, I'll be with him,” he said, but I just gave him a light nod, going inside the bathroom.

Minutes later, I came out all set and ready to join Lucian. The minute Arthur’s eyes met mine, his eyes widened in awe; a glimpse of disappointment flushed his face as he forced a lump down his throat.

“What is it? Is something wrong with what I'm wearing?” I asked, staring down at the simple gown I wore.

“No, Mummy, you look amazing,” Ethan replied with a smile.

“The boy is right, Evie, you look great. It's just… never mind,” he stuttered.

But the minute he said those words, I immediately knew where he was driving; he was going down a path we both knew was impossible even before all these rebels of Sentinel and Umbra. He couldn't, and I couldn't either. My heart was confused or rather somewhere else.

“Alright then… wish me luck,” I said, feigning a smile.

“You don't need it, Mom; those humans are no match,” Ethan said with a calm voice, making me let out a light chuckle.

I gave one final nod before stepping out of the room. I locked eyes with Lucian, who was just coming from his room, dressed in a simple yet classy T-shirt and jeans with a matching face cap to cover his puffy eyes from the trauma he'd been through.

“You look stunning,” were the first words he muttered as he approached me, but I just looked away, cheeks red in embarrassment. We were just inches away from the stairs that led to the sitting room.

“Keep that smile; at least this isn't fake. We are definitely going to need it out there,” he said as he carefully wrapped his hands around my waist, sending chills down my spine as I stared at him.

“Get used to it,” he whispered.

“But… I'm… uhm…” I stuttered.

“Speak,” he ordered.

“What about what Kieran said? We shouldn't be…” I tried to summon the courage to say the words, but I just couldn't.

“You weren't part of the fight years ago, Evie, so you have nothing to worry about. My dispute isn't with you or Ethan; it's with your ex and his people, the same people who chased and rejected you,” he said, as if reading my thoughts.

“I know, Lucian, but you still don't get it… You can't kill those people,” I blurted out.

His countenance immediately changed as he stared at me, removing his hands from my waist.

“Can you even hear yourself, Evie? That guy threatened my life and still had the guts to tell me to my face what his father and his people did to mine. I'm out here all alone, just getting to know my real identity with no one to actually guide me or tell me things about this life except my annoying personal assistant who somehow is my guardian angel…” he said.

“Guardian beast, actually,” I corrected.

“FCK whatever he is, Evie; I'm going to the bottom of this, and I'm definitely getting my revenge on that ex of yours.”

“You can't, Lucian; that's Ethan's future. Please, I beg of you,” I pleaded.

He just stood there with a straight face, staring down at me, and all of a sudden, he held his head in agony.

“What's wrong?” I asked, my voice laced with panic.

“My head; I can hear a voice… It hurts!” he retorted.

My heart began pounding in my chest as I drew closer to him. Realization hit me, “Your wolf,” I mumbled softly.

“What's that supposed to mean?” he asked in confusion.

“The voice you're hearing, don't fight it; don't struggle with it. That's your wolf; talk to it!” I urged.

“Don Lucian, we're ready!” A hoarse voice echoed in my ears, but before I could take a look at who it was, Lucian forcefully grabbed my waist, his grip firm on them as he placed a kiss on my lips.

I didn't fight it; I just gave in stupidly as the taste of his tongue in mine made me go wild. He pulled out gently, slowly turning his gaze to the voice we heard. “We’ll join you shortly,” he replied with the most sexy yet firm voice I've ever heard.

I turned my gaze in the direction of the voice only to see a young lady among the paparazzi as she gave him a light nod before leaving.

“What was that for?!” I fired at Lucian the minute I was sure the lady was gone.

“I'm so sorry, Evie; I can swear I didn't do that on purpose,” he said.

For a moment, everywhere around me went silent as I stared at him in awe. “What did you just say?” I asked in shock.

“What's wrong? Did I say something wrong?” he asked with raised brows.

“Did you just say sorry?” I retorted.

He paused for a while the minute the last few seconds replayed in his mind.

“We should go downstairs; the paparazzi are waiting on us,” he blurted out and began walking down the stairs in a hurry, trying to avoid the question while I stood there, still processing what had just happened before trailing behind him.

I tried shaking the feeling off, classifying it as a mistake or possibly a slip of the tongue. But DON LUCIAN never makes such mistakes. Not the Lucian I know, I thought. I wonder if this was because of his wolf, I mumbled under my breath.

We were just about to climb down the final step when the voice from one of our guests echoed in my ears.

“So tell me, Kisha, for the period of time you walked with Don Lucian, have you in any way noticed anything strange?” the reporter asked.

From where I stood, I could feel the tension and fear in Kisha’s eyes as she struggled to answer the question.

“You're supposed to direct all questions to me and not my employees!” Lucian thundered, his voice echoing loudly through the room.
