Chapter 163

Carter's POV

“What was that about?” Zimora asked as soon as Nyx was out of earshot.

I shrugged and sank into a chair.

“Don't give me that Carter,” she glared at me, paused the clothes she was folding, and crossed her arm around her chest.

“King Nyx never treats you that way, no matter how angry he is, you're like his best friend, so if he's giving you the cold shoulder, something must have happened. What is it?”

“He found out,” I sighed, and she knitted her brows together.

“About what?”

“Us,” I muttered almost inaudibly, and her face sank, she was instantly drained of all colour.

“You told me you'll tell him when we are both ready,” she snapped.

“Well, I didn't tell him,” I shrugged, “he just kind of figured it out on his own, I'm guessing his biggest clue was the nurse,”

“So what do we do now?” She ran her hand through her hair and paced about.

“Relax Zi,”

“How can you tell me to relax? The one thing that brought me joy is about to be ripped from my palms and you're telling me to relax?” The tears pooling in her eyes glistened.

“Zimora, will you just listen? Nyx isn't mad at me because we're together, on the contrary, he's mad because I didn't tell him,”

“Wait, what??” She halted in her steps, and stared at me blankly.

“What do you mean by that?”

“I meant what exactly it means, he's not mad that we're together, he's only mad I didn't tell him, and he had to figure it out on his own, I guess I broke his heart, seeing as I was supposed to be his best friend,” I mumbled sadly.

I had known Nyx for years, and this was the first time I had been at the receiving end of his silent treatment, and it hurt a lot, seeing him do everything by himself without asking so much as a little help from me.

Honestly, I had no life aside being at Nyx’s side, and now that I wasn't doing that, I felt empty, like a whole part of my life was missing, and it had only been a few minutes.

He was right, I had downplayed the bond we shared.

How could I have ever thought Nyx was so selfish?

I made the mistake of assumption, and now I was paying the consequences.

“Earth to Carter,” Zimora snapped her fingers in front of me, and it jerked me back to reality.

“So what do we do now? Because you sitting here and moping isn't going to help settle anything, Nyx is mad at you, so you have to fix it,”

“Mad at me?” I looked up at her and almost chuckled, as the strong defiant look plastered boldly on her face.

“You seem to forget he barely acknowledged you, when he stepped in here,”

“That's true,”

“You may think it's something insignificant Zimora, but Madelyn has a spot for you in her heart, and that automatically means you're special to Nyx as well, and we kept this huge secret from him, we've hurt him big time, I can't even start imagining,”

“I hate how you're always right,” she rolled her eyes and I scoffed.

“How about we talk to him?”

“I tried, trust me, it didn't work,”

“How about you try helping him do some things?”

“Trust me babe, when Nyx is hell bent on giving you the cold shoulder, even if you help him out with things, he's still go ahead and do it himself anyways, he's that stubborn,”

She sighed, and sank on the bed.

“Well…” we were interrupted by the shrill piercing of my phone as it rang it out loud.

I exchanged glances with Zimora and shrugged, who could be calling?

I rarely received calls, unless they were work related, and recently, Nyx had ordered that no one from the company was allowed to disturb any of us.

I picked up the phone, and the one name I hadn't thought of appeared boldly on my screen.

Caspian.

What the hell was he doing calling me?

He had disappeared without a word after Linda was executed and the baby taken away from them.

I watched the phone ring with no plans of picking up, till it stopped, and almost immediately, it rang back.

Goddess, now was not the time for this Caspian, I had a whole lot on my mind, and hearing what this prick had to say, wasn't one of them.

“Aren't you going to pick it?” Zimora, who had originally gone back to her folding, nudged at the phone.

“Nope, it actually isn't that important after all,” I ended the call, and pocketed the phone.

“Who was it?” She eyed me suspiciously, but I shut my eyes tightly and ignored her.

“Carter, are you scared to pick another woman's call in my presence? Go ahead please, don't let me stop you,”

“Ziiiii, for goodness sake, can you just let it go?”

“Not until you tell me why you've refused to pick up the phone,”

“It was Caspian,” I snapped, and her hands stopped folding midway.

“Caspian? As in your twin in diaspora?”

“Do you know any other Caspian?” I scoffed and rolled my eyes.

“Then why aren't you picking up Carter? You haven't heard from him for days now, and when you finally have the chance to, you're going to ignore him?”

“Exactly my point Zimora, he disappeared into thin air for days, and all of a sudden remembers he has a twin?”

“Can you stop being so stubborn, Carter and pick up the phone?”

A part of me actually wanted to hear him.out, to be he was safe, and still alive, but the rage I felt for him clouded my sense of reasoning. How could he even think of plotting against Nyx, with Linda of all persons?

“Here,” Linda pointed the phone towards me, I wasn't even aware of when she crossed the room to where I was and picked up the phone.

She had already answered the call, but we couldn't hear any voice, just the sound of slow, ragged breathing.

“Caspian?” I called slowly, panic slowly creeping in.

“Carter… I need… your help please,” he stuttered, his teeth chattering.

Something was wrong, he was in trouble.
