Chapter 32: A Big Problem

“What did you say?” Logan asked in disbelief. He narrowed his eyes at Robin, trying to read the man’s thoughts.

“Mrs. Harper fainted and is being examined by the doctor. I don’t know what they’re talking about, but she fainted after speaking with Mr. Liam. Maybe she just heard some shocking news.” Robin explained briefly.

Logan clenched both his fists tightly. He ran toward the room where Harper was being treated.

When he arrived, the doctor and several nurses were examining Harper’s condition. He couldn’t stay calm throughout the examination. His heart was pounding violently; he felt anxious.

“How is my wife, Doctor?” Logan asked with deep concern.

“Her condition has deteriorated drastically. She suffered a heart attack due to the shocking news.” The doctor’s answer matched exactly what Robin had said.

Logan let out a harsh sigh. He tugged at his hair to relieve his stress. Why Harper? Why was she always plagued by endless problems? Why did a gentle woman like her have to endure such a harsh blow from a life that seemed to be against her?

“But she’s never had a history of heart problems before. Why did she suddenly have a heart attack?” Logan couldn’t believe it.

“Sir, this could be due to many factors,” the doctor tried to explain.

Logan stared at Harper’s pale face, his emotions in turmoil. The scars from the accident hadn’t even faded yet, and now she was once again burdened by such a heavy weight that her heart couldn’t take it.

“As much as possible, please avoid anything that might cause her stress. As her husband, you should be paying more attention to her, sir. I don’t know what your issues are, but this isn’t the first time she’s nearly died.” The doctor issued a warning before leaving the room.

“I understand," Logan replied weakly. He sat in the chair beside the bed, his gaze fixed on Harper. Even without being told, he already knew he was at fault. He had failed to protect the woman he loved.

Harper’s breathing sounded very weak. A machine was connected to her body, transmitting her heartbeat to a monitor.

Logan sat there, keeping Harper company for a long time. He wanted to make sure his wife was okay.

“Sir, how much longer do we have to stay here? You have an important meeting to attend shortly. You can’t miss this meeting.” Christian tried to remind him. He understood that his boss was at his lowest point right now, but he couldn’t just shirk his responsibilities. After all, he was the company’s leader, and every second of his time was precious.

“Do you think I can work under these circumstances? My wife is unconscious, and you’re still reminding me about work?” Logan said angrily.

Christian fell silent. He didn’t dare say anything else while Logan was in protective mode. It would be pointless to try to persuade him to keep working; Logan would only lash out at him with explosive anger.

Logan stayed there for quite a while until Harper finally regained consciousness. He thought Harper would fly into a rage upon finding herself there, but his assumption was wrong. Harper just sat there silently, her eyes red as she held back her tears.

She turned her face away, not wanting to look at Logan.

For no apparent reason, Harper suddenly started crying.

“What’s wrong? What happened? I can help you if you tell me.” Logan tried to coax her. He knew Harper was still angry with him, but she was too weak to make a scene right now.

“None of your business.” Harper replied curtly. She continued to sob, remembering what her father had just said.

“You’re still my responsibility as long as we’re not officially divorced. The Salim family’s problems automatically become my problems too. If I don’t help out, people will blame me, and that will affect Ibis Corp’s reputation.” Logan looked for a reason Harper could accept.

Harper took a deep breath. She wiped her cheek, wet from her tears.

“My dad just told me…" Harper started crying again as she recalled what her father had said. She couldn’t bring herself to tell him.

“What did Liam say?” Logan was getting impatient.

Harper sighed again, trying to compose herself.

“The case overseas hasn’t been resolved. The public is demanding that the police act quickly. My father’s company there has been sealed off, and the victim’s family is demanding $100 million in compensation. After an investigation, it was found that illegal transactions were carried out by his trusted associates there, but all those transactions point to my father as the perpetrator. All companies under the Salim Group will be investigated. During the investigation, all companies will be suspended—maybe for a month, two months, or perhaps they’ll cease operations permanently.” Harper spoke in a hoarse, trembling voice.

“All of the Salim family’s assets have been frozen. Our house and vehicles have also been seized until the investigation is complete and the Salim Group is cleared of wrongdoing. My father wants to come back here, but he can’t because all our assets have been frozen. We don’t have a single dollar right now. Even my contract for the new project was automatically terminated because the company is in trouble, and I have to pay a $150 million penalty. Meanwhile, we have no money left. I also don’t know where I’m supposed to go after I’m discharged from the hospital,” she explained.

Logan just listened, his eyes filled with sympathy. He reached for Harper’s hand and held it gently.

“I’ve been thinking about what’s become of the Salim family now. What about the workers? My parents must be under a lot of stress with this situation. My father trusted the CEO he appointed to run the company there, but it backfired and destroyed the family business.” She began to cry again.

Logan smiled faintly. He stroked the top of Harper’s head with tenderness.

“Don’t worry about that. I’ll book tickets for Liam and Lisa so you can all be together again. You can stay at one of my houses; just pick whichever one you want. I’ll cover all the damages and the fines. It’s no big deal.” Logan spoke firmly, yet his voice was full of tenderness.

Harper shook her head. She didn’t want to burden Logan that much. The Salim family was already deeply in debt. She also didn’t know when the case would be resolved and they could return to a normal life.

“I don’t want to; I don’t want to owe you a favor,” Harper insisted.

“You can work at my office until the issue is resolved and you regain access to the Salim family’s assets,” Logan offered as a solution.

“But Ibis Corp and the Salim Group are two different companies. I’m an architect, while your company is in the food industry.”

“Be my personal assistant.” Logan replied with a smile.

“But, Christian…" Harper turned to look at Christian, who was standing not far away.

“He’ll be the assistant to my assistant.”

“Sir, did you just say I’m being demoted? This isn’t fair to me!” Christian protested.
