Chapter 31: What's Wrong?
“Harper, I just need five minutes. Please.” Logan tried to negotiate.
“Robin!” Harper didn’t give him a chance at all.
Robin finally appeared after Harper had grown extremely annoyed.
“Show Mr. Thompson the door.” She said firmly. Her hands were clenched tightly. Her face flushed red, her jaw set. Unconsciously, she squeezed the sketch pencil in her hand. It made her fingers hurt even more.
“I came here to offer compensation," Logan spoke quickly. He pulled out a check and wrote the figure 150 million dollars on it. Then, he placed it right on top of Harper’s drawing table.
Harper stared at him with a murderous glare. Her chest ached terribly, as if that lump of flesh were being squeezed relentlessly.
Was she worth only 150 million dollars to Logan?
Had all his concern all this time been nothing but a pretense?
Was his love nothing but a lie?
Logan didn’t even ask about her condition at all. He came only to offer a settlement.
From the very beginning, Logan knew that Harper had agreed to marry him solely as a means to carry out her revenge. Could it be that Logan had planned all of this? Logan destroyed her first before she could destroy him.
“Robin, don’t you care about your job anymore? Why are you just standing there? Drag them out. If they come back, have security kick them out.” Harper turned to look at Robin, who was standing in the doorway looking confused.
Robin seemed torn. He didn’t know what to do now.
“Harper, I know you’re angry with me. At least take this as an apology from me. This money isn’t much to you, but I’ll feel guilty for the rest of my life if you don’t accept it," Logan insisted.
“When you hit me, what was going through your mind? Did you think I’d die and no one would sue you? We’ve already agreed to get a divorce, so why are you still meddling in my life?” Harper said with an indescribable sense of frustration. She wasn’t angry because of the accident that had befallen her. She was angry because the culprit was Logan.
She had started to develop feelings for that middle-aged man, but why had things turned out this way?
What sin had she committed that she had to fall in love with that bastard and his son? She’d fallen in love twice—why did both of them always break her heart?
“I… I couldn’t have hit you on purpose. I didn’t even know you were in that car.” Logan tried to come up with an excuse.
“You knew I was dying after you got out of your car. But you chose to run away instead of taking me to the hospital. You’re more of a devil than Ethan. At least Ethan truly wanted to kill me; he didn’t abandon me while I was dying.” She spoke with intense emphasis. Every word she uttered turned into an arrow that shot swiftly through his heart.
Logan fell silent. The one who was most broken and heartbroken was himself. He had to bear Harper’s hatred for something he had never done.
He had lost the wife he loved, while his relationship with his son showed no signs of improving. He had lost the two most precious people in his life at the same time.
Perhaps it wouldn’t hurt this much if he had lost them to death. Because then, he wouldn’t have to see them again and feel the same pain over and over.
“I know you’re forced to work under these conditions because you have a contract to fulfill. Take this to cover the contract penalty and just focus on your recovery. I’ll take care of all the hospital bills and pay for the repairs to your car. If you need anything, call me. I’ll take care of everything,” Logan insisted.
“Don’t try to act all nice in front of me. I know you came here because I already called the police. You just don’t want to go to jail. If I hadn’t contacted the police, I’m sure you wouldn’t have come to see me at all.” Harper said with a tone full of hatred.
Logan smiled faintly. He smiled to ease the pain in his chest.
Without saying a single word, Logan turned and walked away. He left the room carrying a gaping wound in his chest. No matter how long it takes, that wound will never heal.
Christian followed behind, his mind filled with questions. Why did Logan have to endure all this when he had a golden opportunity to explain what really happened?
Is this the best he could do? Best for whom? Everything he’d done would only torment himself and Harper. Meanwhile, the only one who stood to gain was Ethan.
“Sir, I think you should tell Mrs. Thompson that you’re her savior. You can’t bear the accusations she’s hurling at you. You know, I’m really upset by what she said. If she weren’t the woman you love, I’d love to give her a good beating.” Christian poured out his heart.
“Watch your mouth. Even if I didn’t love her, she’s still Mrs. Thompson, and you have a duty to respect her," Logan said firmly.
“Sir, is what Mrs. Thompson just said true? Were you reported to the police?” Christian asked curiously. If it were true, on what grounds did Harper report Logan like that?
“I don’t know. Not a single police officer has contacted me or come to see me. Maybe she asked the police to look for evidence first. There are no CCTV cameras there, no witnesses either, and the evidence at the scene doesn’t provide any clues about who the culprit is. If the police arrest me without clear evidence, it will only tarnish the police department’s reputation.” Logan explained.
“What if the police find evidence of Mr. Ethan’s involvement?” Christian asked with a worried tone.
Logan stopped in his tracks. He stood still for a moment, then let out a heavy sigh.
“The police better not find anything there.” He replied weakly.
“Sir! Mr. Thompson!” Robin called out from a distance as he ran toward him.
Logan turned around. He looked at Robin with a furrowed brow and a questioning gaze.
“Sir, Mrs. Harper suddenly fainted after receiving a call from Mr. Liam. It looks like she had a mild heart attack.”
